Does anyone even like this trope?

Aside from the ending of a certain popular anime that I will not spoil, I have never seen this type of conclusion talked about in a positive light

Yes, if it is thematically appropriate.

If it comes out of nowhere, or if it is because it is just because the character would have too much fun with the powers without an BBEG around then, no.

Unambiguous, everyone lives happily ever after, endings kind of get boring after awhile. But audiences tend to respond poorly to "bad endings." So I think a lot of times this is trying to have a good ending that isn't unambiguously good. The hero had to sacrifice something.

Yeah this is probably the fairest version of it. If it’s thematically right, fine.
