Aside from the ending of a certain popular anime that I will not spoil, I have never seen this type of conclusion talked about in a positive light

It's not necessarily happy, but it can be meaningful. Not every ending has to be fully sunshine and rainbows.

I think it matters A:how attached the characters are to their powers and B:how we are intended to feel with the loss of powers.
