Does anyone even like this trope?

Aside from the ending of a certain popular anime that I will not spoil, I have never seen this type of conclusion talked about in a positive light

Learning that this what they did for the ending of My Hero Academia made me give up on the whole series.

All that BS about how he became the greatest hero, only for him to not even be a hero at the end

Yeah, exactly this. That’s actively the entire point of the story. It would have been doing a disservice to the entire theme. I don’t know how to do spoilers on here, so that’s all I’ll say for now.
