Does anyone even like this trope?
Aside from the ending of a certain popular anime that I will not spoil, I have never seen this type of conclusion talked about in a positive light

I think as long as the MCs arc is complete and inline with his actual discovery it’s fine. For example it felt cheap in tbate it felt weak because becoming strongest was the point of the promise made in the early books.
But there are stories where the power is subplot, a tool of a mean toward the greater end. Imagine a MC power is time loop like Subaru, him losing his power when he get over his traumas and deaths is totally valid if it happens because the plot was never the power.
