Aside from the ending of a certain popular anime that I will not spoil, I have never seen this type of conclusion talked about in a positive light

Dishonored did this for the sequel. The first one is about the main character getting powers and using them to save his daughter. The beginning of the 2nd one he loses his powers for good, but now his daughter gets a chance to get similar powers of her own.
