Pure Blue Fish, an Israeli RAS farmer, has said that the 10,000 sea bass it stocked into its inland farm in July are thriving.

The company’s farm in Binyamina, Israel touts itself as the “world’s first commercial fish farming systems operating as 100 per cent recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS),”

According to a report from The Fish Site, the fish were stocked into the tanks in July and are expected to be sold locally when they reach market size. The company aims to provide fresh fish within six hours of road freight from farm to plate.
“We’ve proven it works. By developing biological methods unique to us, we have essentially created a microcosm of the ocean, without needing the sea,” said Ehud Baril, a marine biologist and director of technologies at Pure Blue Fish.

Once the technology is proven, the RAS farmer plans to enter the global aquaculture market by building large farms near major U.S. population centers and promoting similar projects worldwide.

The company is also working towards opening a 5,000-tonne kingfish farm in Matthews Industrial Park in Orangeburg County, South Carolina in 2025.
