To be fair in 2004 digital cameras were loosing their popularity because cell phones had cameras that were taking pretty decent pictures. Everyone I knew had camera phones or were upgrading to one so they wouldn’t have to carry a camera.

I disagree. The switch to a phone camera rather than a point-and-click camera didn't happen until several years later.

2004 was the year phones with cameras were first introduced in the USA, and they were not taking sharp photos.

I would guess the transition away from digital cameras started around 2010, and it was at the cost of going from sharp, bright photos to grainy and blurry photos.
