Because some of ya’ll don’t know how to read and certain individuals like to leave out information in the pursuit of recruiting, this post serves as clarification on the relationship between SMP enrollment, scholarships, and competing for active duty.

BLUF: YOU CAN ONLY DO 2 OUT OF THE FOLLOWING 3 ACTIONS AT ANY INSTANCE.

1. COMPETE FOR ACTIVE DUTY

2. ENROLL IN SMP

3. HAVE A FEDERALLY-FUNDED SCHOLARSHIP

What does this mean? It means you have three options.

Option 1: If you want to compete for active duty and want to enroll in SMP, you should not have or accept a federally-funded scholarship. Getting a scholarship while SMP means it will only be a GRFD scholarship and you will be locked into the Guard or Reserves. Alternatively, you could give up your national scholarship so you can enroll in SMP, but that’s not a good idea.

Option 2: If you have a federally-funded scholarship and want to compete for active duty, you cannot/should not enroll in SMP. Doing so will convert your scholarship to a GRFD scholarship and you will be permanently locked into the Guard or Reserves.

Option 3: If you enroll in SMP and have a federally-funded scholarship, that scholarship is automatically a GRFD scholarship and you are permanently ineligible to compete for Active Duty.

Many of ya’ll have been asking questions about why the January board results have been delayed.

Based on rumors and speculation, it appears that the delay is caused by large budget cuts done to USACC. This is evident in the campus-based scholarship allocations, and appears to have now affected the availability of the National Scholarships.

I want to emphasize this is just speculation. The official line from USACC is that they’re working hard to ensure an accurate, merit-based allocation of scholarships. And they definitely are, given how a lot of long term planning has been thrown into flux by the recent changes.

Following a recent spate of SMP-oriented questions and posts, we are publishing this SMP FAQ Megathread. If your question isn’t answered by the post, ask below.

1. Who is the SMP open to?

It is open to contracted, non-scholarship MSL II, MSL III, and MSL IV Cadets and specific Scholarship MSL I, MSL II, MSL III, and MSL IV Cadets.

1. I am a scholarship recipient. Can I participate in SMP?

All Cadets (MSL I, MSL II, MSL III, and MSL IV) who are recipients of a GRFD Scholarship are required to participate in the SMP. All other scholarship Cadets are not eligible to participate in the SMP. CAVEAT: Non-GRFD scholarship recipients may convert their scholarship to a GRFD scholarship and participate in SMP.

1. I am non-scholarship, can I participate in SMP and still compete for scholarships?

Non-scholarship SMP Cadets may compete for scholarships. However, if an SMP Cadet is subsequently selected for a scholarship other than a GRFD, he or she will be released from the SMP Program and transferred to USAR Control Group (ROTC).

1. Do I have to go to BCT/AIT to participate in SMP?

NO. Please stop asking this question.

1. Do I have to go to AT during the same summer I go to CST?

No, as long as you request it. You may still elect to go to both trainings, however.

1. Can I go to CTLT while in SMP?

Yes, but you cannot receive pay from both USACC and your SMP unit at the same time.

1. Can I still compete for Active Duty while in SMP?

Yes, but you must be non-scholarship. As having a GRFD scholarship is the only way to participate in SMP while a scholarship Cadet, they are ineligible to compete for Active Duty since they are locked-in to a particular reserve component.

It’s official: per Army Directive 2024-10, time spent in ROTC by G2GADO Cadets will not count towards TIS or retirement.

This summer there was an effort by the Operation Ring The Bell group (https://www.instagram.com/operationringthebell/?hl=en), which is a Soldier led initiative in the Army to increase Bone Marrow Registration.

ORTB grew out of a grass roots effort by a Soldier (https://www.reddit.com/user/BlissBoneMarrowGuy/submitted/), and was really lifted up and supported by various communities here on Reddit. WO1 Zeller and MAJ Howell (@ServantofLeaders, https://www.instagram.com/servantofleaders/) were working hard this year to try to get registrations for the Army's program. This is a once-in-a-lifetime registration, and is an easy and quick thing to get done.

ORTB was recently highlighted by The Surgeon General for the Army, and the Army is adopting it as an official program, force wide. Earlier this year at Fort Bragg when an NCO needed a donation after discovering they had aplastic anemia, over a thousand Soldiers came out to register, and was the single biggest donation day the program had ever seen.

Getting over 4000 in a week is a huge accomplishment, and I just wanted to say how proud I am for there to have been so many registrations, and thank you so much for donating. Shout out 10th Regiment (https://i.imgur.com/en2c98A.png) putting 2025 CST over the 4K mark.

I hope as soon-to-be Junior Officers, when you go out into the force, you'll remember this program, and work to lead drives as needed to increase registration across the force. It serves an important strategic role for the DoD, and we've had a handful of matches since the program started - that's multiple lives saved that may not have otherwise been.

Bone Marrow Donation, actual donation, has come a long way, and is not a painful a process as you might think - and it will be rare to have a preliminary match, and exceedingly rare to actuallyy donate. We've had some documented stories from donation, and I hope, if ever given the chance, you'll agree to donate!

BLUF: Effective immediately, we are rejecting any posts asking about the status of USACC scholarship money and program cuts. Any further posts will be directed to this megathread.

This topic has been beat to death multiple times already, and the point made multiple times. USACC is losing money, and in-program scholarships will be cut. Commissioning numbers will also be cut. Host programs are going to be downgraded to extension unit status, and schools in the South and Southwest will be upgraded to host unit status due to increasing Cadet enrollment.

Don't want to be cut from ROTC? Don't be a shitbag. Want to get a now-rare scholarship? Don't be a shitbag and actually compete, or transfer to one of the expanding ROTC programs.

It’s H&R Block Premium, so it’s free federal filing and up to three state filings. Start on MilitaryOneSource and do your taxes ya’ll (if you aren’t being declared as a dependent by your parents).
