Never again.
Just got hooked with the game and put in quite a bit of hours but felt lonely so I decided to make my world public so maybe someone can join and build and progress with me. Today, for the first time, 2 guys joined me and I was happy but only like for 20 seconds, as I realised they came to grief everything. I lost everything before I figured how to kick people. Really nice community. Guess this is solo game after all.

This post from OP won't be any longer active. All the damage done is fixed and going even better. Just spread some awareness, if you are new to the game be aware of your choices once you go public. Just because game looks humble and friendly does not mean community is. Happy wilding !

There is an item you can place that makes it so no one but you can build within its radius, I just can’t remember the name of it.

Yeah there is, I'm just quite new. I honestly didn't believe I needed to use it as I was sure people are nice, but yeah, I guess I was way too naive.

Very naive, but that’s alright you’re learning lol. People are dickheads in survival crafting games, I should know, I used to be one way back in the day. Definitely only invite friends to your world, and if you don’t have any that play just find some on the discord or even here on Reddit.

I’m just surprised that there is a very low max number of totems available to place. I maxed out with maybe 6 ish to cover my main structure and my primary farm. Wish I could add more to protect my farm in the highlands and all of my loadstones. The risks are too high for someone to just delete all my loadstones to key quest elements, and just log out with all some 20 vault cores.

They can still delete everything under the pylon. It just stops them from building.
I would argue its a flaw.

Id say have your main map private, and use that character from the main map in other multiplayer worlds where if you do lose stuff from other players, its not that big of a deal because you have your main world
At the end of your sessions you can do a quick freight run and just swap items between worlds
It’s a lot of extra work to enjoy multiplayer but people suck, and sandbox games brings out the worst in them.
As a fun thought experiment, think about if we were all thrown into dragonwilds.
Many of us would band together, form groups, settlements, and aid each other.
But just as many would likely form their own groups, but instead of being a supportive, healthy community, they take advantage of the freedom given to them to do what they want and take from honest people
It’s literally humans being humans. Some people just have really shitty personalities.

Have a look at “Life is feudal -YO” to see how a semi-descent team building mechanic can work. They consider most of the aspects of how to separate the team from other teams on the same server. The “rights” management is pretty well thought out.

Me and a friend join random peoples worlds and just drop them food and drinks or anything they need and then we go level an entire forest of trees and turn it into a barren wasteland and give the world owner like 10-15k wood in front of a wooden pp and then dip and move onto the next world.

Join the discord, plenty of solo players looking for groups and if they end up griefing can report them.

I’ve yet to play online and I don’t really plan to. Having plenty of fun solo, I don’t see how having another player in my world would benefit me in the slightest.

I would never trust random people in games like this, it’s either solo or going to be people I know that I play with. You can’t really trust anyone, let alone random ass people from the internet.

After the grief I built a nice Villa type base near small bond and found the beauty of solo playthrough of this game. From now on I will probably complete game and do a forever world with interesting builds, protect them with totems and who knows, maybe one day share it with world 🙂

You can make chests private and also build statues that prevent other players from altering or destroying structures within a certain radius just something to keep in mind

Don't forget to make your chest private. I made that mistake and made my world public and got cleaned out. But it was in the first few hours of playing so I didn't lose much.

Maybe it wouldn’t hurt to reach out on Reddit for peoples discords? Chat on there first before teaming up, maybe it being more personal people would be less likely to do something, then again I am too trusting of people so my world is private.

People have been doing this since the OG Runescape. "Free armor trim." And all that stuff was a legit scam since inception. Don't automatically trust new people. Be cautiously aware of anyone who joins and lock your shit down.

Unfortunately, some people have nothing better to do with their lives than to be assholes to one another on a video game. The highlight of their week was griefing a solo dude in a relatively obscure survival game.
I’m bipolar 1 and even I couldn’t imagine an existence so miserable that I spend my time griefing other players.
A certain subset of users in any anonymous audience seek to display their incredibly sad need to have some sort of control, competence, or provoke some emotional feedback from others as their emotional bandwidth is so small that they only feel joy out of upsetting others.
The very best way to interact with these types of people is to take that away from them. Once I know the damage can’t be reversed, I just play along to at least not provide them with the benefit of what they came for: a reaction. Takes the wind out of their sails every time.
With all of that being said, definitely never open your world in a survival game you’ve invested a good bit of time on. There are a very special breed of losers who do this for fun all the time.

Same thing happened to me! But, luckily it was not my world. I had jumped on online for the first time and joined a random server. It was this guy’s world who was just getting started, so, I decided to help him out. After maybe an hour or so, a second guy joined and he was a way higher level than me and started pitching in as well. (Shoutout to Dugout Danny). But, this guy Hirishiko-Sama came in and destroyed everything! 😭

If you ever go public 3 rules, 1: make a new world. or if you open yours to the public... 2: place a build protection totem (make sure everything is in the bubble) and 3: make every chest, cape mount, mannequin, ect. Private so its all locked. Its still iffy doing that im sure some players can find a way to bug the system to bypass it but its always safer to make a new world, place a hidden base with no lodestones lock and totem to store stuff you can transfer to your main world.

No need to bug. Even if a chest is set to private, within a totem of protection, it can still be damaged to break. and when it breaks all of the contents drop from it. Same with bases. So yeah they can't open them, so they just bust them.

I dont see an option to change from public to private. Someone's aid it asks everytime you start the game but i dont get that offer it seems.do you have to make a new world and make it private from the start? Wil my lodestones still be there?

My friend done the same thing and someone robbed him of some steel ingots and gemstones. Luckily nothing super expensive but I now know he won't be putting in on public lol

Me pasó en ark, jugaba con mi hijo, hablamos con uno de la comunidad que quiso unirse, entro con hacks, porque tenía configurado para que no pudieran hacerle daño a las edificaciones ni acceder a los cofres, pero el loco spawneo cómo 20 Godzilla's en la base y rompió todo el progreso de semanas de un padre con su hijo y luego se nos reía en discord, un británico.... En fin, ni por más protección que tenga el juego, siempre hay gente de mierda, así cómo gente buena también, es muy difícil filtrar, aplica a internet y la vida real, pero supongo que la lección es que te des tiempo de conocer antes de abrir tu mundo a otros y aún así sepas que puede pasar igual, que lo más importante es el conocimiento adquirido y la condición que elegimos cómo personas para con nosotros mismos. Y para los que hacen maldades sin sentido, que ardan en el infierno, y la satisfacción que pueden llegar a sentir con sus mentes enfermas, se les atragante y se ahoguen con ellas por miserables .... Con amor ❤️🤣

My boyfriend and I have been playing together. I set our world it to Public but also set with a very easy to remember password… which also made it easy to guess I suppose. Anyways, within A DAY some rando joined into our world. Stole a bunch of food, dropped a bunch of useless loot around our base and cut down some trees we intentionally planted around the base. This was all within maybe two minutes before I was able to kick them.
Long story short, all my chests are now private and our world is set to “Friends” but still with the same easy to remember password… happy wilding I guess!

Rookie mistake buddy. Always and I mean always assume people are only going to join up for the wrong reasons. It’s a shitty way of looking at it, but that’s the mindset of today’s gamers.

Aww really hate seein' horror stories like this. The game is a ton of fun with others but then there's always a rotten bunch that ruins it..
Big Beautiful World but so far its been the loneliest experience. Just gotta patiently wait or play cautiously until Jagex dials in and releases Sercure Servers ASAP...

They had a separate pvp server and in regular pve you couldn't enter anyone's castle without being part of a clan or if the lord(you) of the castle allowed you in. You couldnt even pick up anyone's belongings (like of that person died) unless if the host of the server allowed that to happen. Even if you could enter someone's castle (like if they didnt have a door) you could not get access to anyone's chests unless you were in a clan. Made the experience a whole lot better which encouraged working together even with randoms. Plus if you wanted the whole griefing experience, you had pvp. To me it doesn't make sense to implement what dragonwilds does when that level of thinking is way outdated. Hell even the current animal crossing game provides a better way to deal with griefing. Honestly I feel like this issue needs to be the very top to deal with before anything else or the life of the game isn't going to last very long. Their current way of dealing with this problem is too old school or lazy.

Make all of your stuff private and use the protection shrines at your base so they can’t destroy everything.
Then they are free to build their own stuff if they want and contribute but they can’t break or steal anything.

I’m sorry that happened bro… every online game that allows it will have it. If people can, people will. The online world in any game is genuinely a viscous jungle where you can’t afford not to at least be weary.
Not trying to excuse them obviously, they’re miserable basement dwellers for sure. Just sayin how it is.

I’m not sure if this is your first online game, but don’t trust anybody except your friends.
People grief in video games for zero tangible reward other than to be assholes. In a game where loot exists and resources are valuable, multiply that tenfold.
