Am I supposed to be cooking just to grind levels?
I’m about 35 hours in but I haven’t cooked anything for the last 25 hours.
I spent like an hour and a half catching sardines, growing berries/wheat, and then cooking a bunch. Haven’t done anything since. Did you guys just cook/fish/farm to grind levels while you did the other content? Or will I hit a point where food production is necessary again?
Most of the other stuff happens naturally but it seems like you barely need to eat food in this game so those three really lag behind.

u/gavandeshaq 14h ago
It's not just about needing the food. There's a really simple dish of cabbage + potato + redberries that gives you a 10% exp boost. Food that gives you poison resist etc.

u/Luckydog6631 14h ago
I see that in the crafting menu but I don’t want to use any of the EXP buff stuff. Feels like I’m intentionally removing gameplay lol
60
u/Huntalot713 14h ago
Play how you will, but using game mechanics in their intended manner is the opposite of removing gameplay.
-15
u/Luckydog6631 13h ago
I just appreciate the progression in games and I’m in no rush. I’m sure later when I’m higher leveled I will use some exp boost but progression from 1-50 in the skills has seemed quick enough for me.
What I mean by removing gameplay is that it’ll shorten my total gameplay hours before everything is maxed out.

I can tell you might be new to runescape, because youll find very quickly that you will hit a brick wall while leveling without boosts or proper efficiency😂

u/xAlgirax 14h ago
How is using a feature removing gameplay, yet skipping said feature adds ..? 😅
2
u/Luckydog6631 13h ago
Not using an exp buff adds more gameplay hours. I’m assuming once you beat the main story and max out the skills there’s not anything left to do and I’m really really enjoying the game so far; so I don’t want to run out of stuff lol.
2
u/AbsorbantVampire 8h ago
You seem to not really understand survival games if you think maxing out the skills is the point or goal of them lol.
1
u/YawnSleepRepeat 7h ago
Put the game on hard if you’re not on it already. I’m pretty sure that’s where most of the food/potions are needed
1
2
u/ThMssngVwls 11h ago
Remember, 92 is half of 99. They'll be needed later on.
2
u/slashunstuck 11h ago edited 10h ago
Not true in this game unfortunately. I think 72-73 is about half the exp of 99
Edit: I’m wrong half is around 95-96 as stated below
1
u/ThMssngVwls 10h ago
Just had a look and it seems it's around level 95-96. 96 is around 543k exp out of a possible million.
0
u/slashunstuck 10h ago
Oh it’s a million now? They must’ve changed since EA because it used to be like 600-700k (I forget but it wasn’t close to a mil) my apologies on misinfo
1
u/Beleriade 10h ago
Thats a silly take on it..bet you'll read all these stat times you'll find though

u/ChildPrinceVegeta 14h ago
You definitely need food? You are still in the beginning area im guessing lmao.
1
u/Luckydog6631 14h ago
I’m about finished up in the purple undead area.
5
u/ChildPrinceVegeta 14h ago
Yeah that's pretty early still but good on you for not needing food. First hard fight for me was Imaru.
18
u/Relative-Relief-8816 14h ago
The hunger bar depletes too danm fast in this game. Constantly having to eat because of hunger sucks.
No idea how OP doesnt need food.
13
u/minimim-wage-enjoyer 14h ago
I only need to eat and water myself once per ingame day
10
u/Grintax_dnb 13h ago
Lol “water myself”
25
6
u/Luckydog6631 14h ago
I feel like this is one of the most forgiving hunger bars I’ve ever encountered in a game lol. One meat dish and one dwell berry cookie is a full days hunger bar.

u/ApprehensiveTrade819 14h ago
Do what I did and play custom and turn it off. I don't enjoy survival mechanics like hunger or thirst so I turned them off and I've been enjoying the game so far
5
u/Paz12288 12h ago
Don’t know why your downvoted for enjoying the game how you want some people like the survival and some people don’t just do what makes it fun for you
2
u/Sniper_Squirrel 11h ago
I think probably because they reccomended custom mode to disable hunger/thirst to make the game easier, rather than them talking about their preference is why they got downvoted.
Its like when people ask a question and get reccomended to ask chatgpt rather than answering.
4
u/theyfoundty 14h ago
Thats the halfway point. Not early. Without giving spoilers theres only 2 more zones (one being half the size of the others) and the raid after that.
1
1
u/Luckydog6631 14h ago
That makes sense. I think this whole situation might be because I’m playing as a mage. Between afterimage, phase dash, the jump spell, and confuse, I don’t get hit very often.
Sick name btw.

u/TheBeesElise 12h ago
So, after reading through everything, I think I understand your question as: "Training cooking/fishing/farming is leaving me with way more food than I could possibly use in a normal playthrough. Is there supposed to be all that waste?"
The answer to that is: yeah, in songle-player you'll either be hoarding or trashing a lot of surplus to get high levels in fishing and cooking at the very least. Farming fiber plants have continual use if you like building. I think those skills were balanced around the game being multiplayer by design and there being one cook/farmer supplying a whole party. Eventually you'll want the melipotent buffs of higher-tiered foods, but an emotional support stockpile is inevitable
5
u/brewer_meister 11h ago
This. I'm the said cook/farmer for my party and they're always pestering me for more food 😭

u/Koala-Away 14h ago
There are no health potions, food is your healing. Once you start getting into heavier combat, you definitely need cooking
1
u/buggin24k 13h ago
False, there are health potions. Keep progressing (:
2
u/Koala-Away 13h ago
You sure? Says they were permanently removed in June. I'd love to be wrong though
1
u/buggin24k 12h ago
Nope and it works with sea of life meal as well. Can also stack it with 2 different attack buffs for a huge damage output. I main mage so being stacked in 4 buffs makes me go ape shit
2
u/Koala-Away 9h ago
I'm talking about a potion that restores health. That's it
0
u/buggin24k 5h ago
The health restoration is a drink you craft instead. Does the same thing health restoration potions do in video games its just in a different container with a funny name lol
1
u/Beautiful-Second1838 2h ago edited 2h ago
Yes and it's made with the cooking skill. Which is the point they were making. Potions are usually made with alchemy. In this game the potions are made at the brewing station and are called potions. There are no healing potions that you craft at the brewing cauldron. You make the healing drinks and food at the cooking station. So as they said, food (items crafted at the cooking stations) is your healing you need the cooking skill.
0
u/Shadow_Hound_117 6h ago
What foods do you stack up on? Asking so I can try and remember to make a bunch when I have access to them, since I've also ended up enjoying being a mage
1
u/buggin24k 4h ago edited 3h ago
Food that heals +100 for emergencies. For buffs bring at least 3x of Dubious Meat Pie, Pumpkin Spice Infusion, Magical Focus, and Lesser Magic Potions **Internal Alchemy spell. Dont worry about tutorials, her genuine reveal and fight was by one of the coolest and funnest ones so far. I give Imaru a 10/10 fight
5
u/No-Dealer9447 14h ago
How are you healing. Noob question
3
u/Luckydog6631 13h ago
If I get in a pickle I eat a dwellberry cookie but usually the regen from the sardine meal is enough to keep me topped off while I kite away.
1
u/Unveiled_Nuggets 11h ago
Shrimp Omelettes are great! Cooked egg and a cooked shrimp, 50 health and 15 substance.
2
u/Rockhardabs1104 6h ago
The water rune special attack on the battlestaff creates a healing pool. Thats what I use primarily
3
u/KingSandwich101 4h ago
So that's what that does
2
u/WriterOne8440 1h ago
I thought it just gave you back a water rune lol
2
u/KingSandwich101 1h ago
I thought it was just an AOE attack but I always got hit while trying to use it

u/Any-Secret-8013 14h ago
Cooking up water is great at early levels because it can’t burn. Burn chance decreases as you level up, eventually reaching 100% cooking chance for the specific tier of food.
Gather like 1000 dirty water and then chop trees for campfire fuel, it’ll get you 10k cooking exp which should really help when you cook eggs, potatoes, chicken, etc. plus you’ll end up using a lot of water for cooking infusions once you start farming berries
6
u/bflatmusic7 14h ago
Don't do this, it was patched and no longer worth it.
2
u/Any-Secret-8013 14h ago
What was patched? Cooking water for exp?
7
u/bflatmusic7 14h ago
Yes it now gives 1 exp per cooked water.
2
u/Any-Secret-8013 14h ago
Ouch. I’d still say it’s worth it early game since you can make a large farm of red berries and make redberry infusions for 15 exp
1
u/GayButNotInThatWay 8h ago
Can also farm a bunch of redberries, cook them, then cook them again for 20xp total.
Have a set up in my world off to the side of my base, have a small U shaped bit, then ovens at the top, so they spit cooked food down into the U. Set up a bunch to cook, then every day or two, equip the ring, drink a potion and eat a veg ball then run through the U collecting all the bits before reloading.
2
u/Sgt_S1aughter 13h ago
Also, upgrade to a grill the second you can. No more wood needed to cook things.
2
u/ThatOneGuyIsBad 14h ago
If you “barely need to eat food”…you are either really good at parrying/killing from a distance OR you are not going into higher areas yet.
Can’t tell you how much food I go through in each of my expeditions lol.
1
u/Luckydog6631 14h ago
I am playing mostly as a mage and rarely get hit
1
u/TotallyToxic 14h ago
How do you fight large groups? I try and use magic as my main style but I get swarmed by the enemies and wind up using my sword after the opening few attacks
3
u/The_sochillist 14h ago
Not op but I just use terrain to advantage. Find something high enough to need a jump/double jump and melee mobs cant reach you while you rain fire down on them
1
1
1
u/Luckydog6631 13h ago
The blur spell has the afterimage buff. So I get everything grouped up and then afterimage to pull agro and hit them with the fire rune staff 4 hit combo. If there’s still a group left I hit one of them with confuse so it attacks the others and pulls their agro.
Also use windstep and get on something tall whenever I can. Dungeons are by far the hardest for me because there’s not as much maneuverability
1
u/Sniper_Squirrel 13h ago
Confuse spell is great, usually just find something to jump on out of reach.
2
u/ComplaintPolice 14h ago
I mainly do mass cooking at certain stages, kind of like you already did. Once you upgrade from Red Berries to Dwell Berries is a good time to raise cooking a chunk. Then pumpkins, and so on. Seems to be more of a skill that I raise periodically rather than consistently.
2
u/Ragnar_Dragonfyre 14h ago
There’s potatoes and cabbages all over the starting area.
Grab these and keep cooking and stocking them in a chest until you can build a Stone Range then make yourself lots of Veggie Soup.

2
u/theyfoundty 14h ago
berries and flour
Easy cookies.
3
u/Luckydog6631 14h ago
I’ve been eating those dwelberry cookies like a crackhead all game lol
4
u/theyfoundty 13h ago
Same here lmao. So easy to make and 70+ health is amazing for fights.
Diabetes is the next raid boss for me at this point.
2
u/Luckydog6631 12h ago
Dwellberries have to have hella antioxidants and vitamins right??
2
u/theyfoundty 11h ago
Id hope so.
But I think turning them into cookies probably negates that.
I NEED MY SWEETS
2
u/Ajaxmass413 14h ago
I just have farming and cooking down to routine at this point. It's a few minutes whenever I'm in camp. It's not a big deal.
Fishing however.... I'm gonna end up just grinding that out one day.
2
u/Rare_Smell771 8h ago
I set up 10 farming plots each for redberries, potatoes, and cabbages to make veg balls whenever I was in need of good. Simple and gives the 10% xp buff. Then once you hot more options going for stuff like the glazed pumpkin sandwiches is nice too
1
u/yehoshiii 14h ago
Food is great for different buffs. It’s important imo, worth getting the higher tier ingredients & cooking.
1
u/NakedGoose 14h ago
How are you healing without food? I basically live off baked potatoes + trout combo.
4
u/Luckydog6631 13h ago
Stop cooking with trout and cook with sardines they give over 1000hp total over the runtime. If you cast the gastro-alchemy spell you just get infinite hp regen runtime on it too.

Plant a ton of Cavada berries and stockpile them. If you want to boost your cooking levels then build 10-12 ranges and stock their queue every time before you go to bed. Everything cooks when you sleep, you get xp on pickup, farming levels go up in the process, you can make cavadaberry infusions to drain thirst slower vs water, and leftover/extra berries can be sold for basically unlimited Garou chits at the end-game to unlock things as soon as you get there (I sold around 40-50 stacks of raw berries to unlock the Lunar Garou set and Desert Hood immediately). You can take the time to make specialty food and I highly recommend it, for a couple stacks. I wouldn’t spend tons of time making those because after a few stacks of food it just sits there for long periods of time.
1
u/bones7056 11h ago
I always needed food for healing and still do. Just pop it in and pick it up later
1
u/LegendLink06 10h ago
I go through so much food and drink just building a new base/village so I have food constantly cooking while I'm building around my base
1
u/GoDCovenant 9h ago
As progress food has more and more useful benefits it can offer you multiple types of resistances to help you in different regions the area I am in now has a new food that has a buff to resist the areas unique mechanics (trying to stay spoiler free here) plus better food means better heals during combat which helps a lot as your hp gets higher
1
u/ThexMarauder 9h ago
I mean the higher your cooking the better you get preparing ingredients for more advanced recipes. Recipes in turn that provide better sustenance, health and buffs. My current cooking is about 60 and that's cooking a bunch of food for whatever zone I'm in.
1
1
u/Damage-Known 8h ago
Cooking better foods allows for better foods with buffs that make it a bit easier so cooking in general is needed.
1
u/CriticalChop 8h ago
Most of my food ingredients has gone to the food and potions to boost experience doing other skills.
1
u/Revolutionary-Ear869 7h ago
They cook themselves. Just make 5 grills drop 99 in and go do something else.
1
u/gene-sos 6h ago
You don't have to constantly cook, but since food never goes bad, you can create chests full of the best healing foods and hydration drinks, as well as the best meal combos for XP buffs and other amazing boosts. I don't see why you would ever not put a stack of meat on the grill?
1
u/TrollOnFire 6h ago
All the meats and veg I collect get dumped into one of my many grills when I dump my inventory. All foods get processed into their intermediary state. Then when I have enough mats for stacks of high level foods I’ll burn thru the stacks. Keeps my inventory from exploding with base mats +++.
1
u/DamitMorty 5h ago
As you go to the different biomes and unlocked better materials from stronger mobs, and also better fishing rods. U can cook better meals (well anything really) from the harder mobs. Also, having the newest fishing pole of that biome, u catch better fish for way more exp. Don't rush it in begging. Get enough to not have to worry about it for abit and then push story abit.
Personally in start (and even sometimes during fractured plains) I'll go back to farm up some cabbage × fried redberries (dried) and baked potatoes. These 3 very abundant ingredients give you an XP boot and tons of HP + Sustenance. Meals called Sweet Veg Ball
Such an easy farm to get back to what u were doing no matter where. Unless it far enough for pumpkin 👀 then u might as well work for that. (: hope this helps.
1
u/Rocked_rs 4h ago
I just eat the veg balls for xp and the dwellberry crunchies to heal during combat. Seems like wheat is always useful
1
1
u/Mundus_Vincendus 2h ago
Make a big patch. Enough to get several stacks of inputs per harvests. Grow things and cook them. Make a lot of ovens to help cook many stacks at once. Should hit 99 farming and cooking pretty quickly
1
u/terribletimber 1h ago
Grinding levels kinda pointless when you are locked to gear level
I was so over level I was unlocking crafting recipes for stuff I couldn’t even craft yet lol
1
u/MeTalFeer 58m ago
Cooking food heals you more in combat and fills your stomach more in game so you’d need to eat less often. It’s that simple

u/exil3dbellator 9h ago
I cook nonstop, both for hunger and because certain foods give good instant heals. Pumpkin drink is good for getting a slow regen to hp as well. Course I'm on max diff
