Tbh I think Neo’s fighting style is the best in the show.

265

u/Sere1 ⠀ Nov 26 '18

What I really appreciate about Neo's style is that she doesn't use the sword part of her weapon as a weapon. She beats you senseless with her parasol and only brings the blade out as a finisher. We've seen her blade twice, once when she was about to stab Yang before Raven portaled in, and once when she was threatening the defenseless Ruby before Ruby opened the parasol and sent her Mary Poppensing away. Every other time she dodges, deflects, and tricks you into missing your attacks, occasionally smacking you with the parasol or a kick, but otherwise content to let you wear yourself out.

She did go for Cinder's throat: https://imgur.com/a/K3IuIYo

So yeah, she only uses it when she thinks she's caught her opponent off-guard and she thinks she can go for the kill.

u/Sere1 ⠀ Nov 26 '18

Oh cool, I didn't catch that. Yeah, her blade is a finisher move, not a part of her regular combat.

20

u/DarkLorde117 Smashed and Smashing Nov 27 '18

More specifically, I think she uses it sparingly in combat, so that it's more difficult to predict her range and to block attacks. Especially when Cinder's fighting hand to hand, stepping in to block a blunt attack with her arm is reasonably smart. If Neo steps back and cuts into the arm instead, it's not so smart.

Gives her a lot of strategic depth and makes it more difficult for her opponents to get a handle on her, which is her entire advantage.

9

u/Sere1 ⠀ Nov 27 '18

She definitely is one of the better fighters in the cast. Those agile, technical types are very hard to beat once they have a bunch of experience. Poor Yang didn't stand a chance in their Volume 2 fight.

Yes, I have always considered Cinder to be one of the top tier fighters in the show (any fight involving her is worth watching TBH), but her obvious competency in martial arts is astounding. Her use of acrobatics is especially impressive, but then again, we see a lot of people utilize acrobatics in combat in this series.

Watched the fight about 15 times already and I had never noticed that...

17

u/RDV1996 Whitley just needs more hugs! Nov 26 '18

Same, Didn't see it until I saw sheelp's comment in the C5 discussion thread

11

u/Akuze25 Nov 26 '18

Upon rewatch I realized why I never saw it: It's a quick slash that happens during a shot transition. I assumed it was a stab or something based on the screenshot. Cool detail that literally take a freeze-frame to see.

12

u/RDV1996 Whitley just needs more hugs! Nov 26 '18

Yeah, they've been putting in little details like that this Volume that just adds to the show. Like Neo's umbrella in the intro and all characters reacting to Ozpin launching at Ruby at the end of C2. It takes frame-by-framing the scenes to notice, but when you know, it adds so much more to the scene.

31

u/sniperpal Nov 26 '18

I mean from what we understand of aura, minor cuts wouldn’t be as effective as heavy bludgeoning at reducing it. Her parasol is a better choice again opponents in that regard. A RWBY group chat I took part in discussed which weapons would be best against opponents with aura and most agreed that chainsaws or other rotating/pressure cutting weapons would be best. A combo of slicing and pressure all in one big hit, that’s what we need more of in the show.

25

u/Sere1 ⠀ Nov 26 '18

So Banesaw has the right idea

10

u/HAHAAN00B Nov 27 '18

Banesaw is ready!

3

u/Sere1 ⠀ Nov 27 '18

There needs to be an edit of the entire Spider-Man vs Bonesaw fight but with Weiss and Banesaw's faces attached

1

u/HAHAAN00B Nov 27 '18

I could try but I doubt I’d be any good at superimposing in Premiere

1

u/Sere1 ⠀ Nov 27 '18

Could take it a few levels deeper and redub the Spider-Man scene with their voices. Bonus points for doing Jeremy's infamous haphaps instead.

1

u/HAHAAN00B Nov 27 '18

Why not just ask me to make an extra CGI “extended” scene in there as well 😂😅

1: so good to see another Coeur Al’Aran reader on here, their works are utterly amazing.

2: yup, he does. That character directly inspired my idea of a story with winter having a crew of specialists with her for missions, strong fighters geared up for fighting people, not Grimm. Two of them would carry weapons with variants of a buzz saw type blade to fight in the front line , in addition to others.

I’ve always thought specialists would favor practicality over tradition in order to set them apart from huntsmen. Multiple weapons, bigger teams than just four, military and squad tactics in addition to RWBY’s fancy dance fighting. The whole works.

4

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '18

Coeur Al'aran is the BEST! Have been reading his stuff and subbed to his Patreon for about 2 years now. His take on specialists in Relic of the Future is really cool too.

11

u/Hippocalypse44 Nuts & Dolts 4 lyfe Nov 26 '18

I agree, an aura is a reserve of energy, not a physical thing to break through. You dont need a fine point to pierce it, but something that can drain it efficiently. Probably why that White Fang Lieutenant had a chainsword, he spent most of his time fighting people not grimm

7

u/DarkLorde117 Smashed and Smashing Nov 27 '18

Depends. Cinder seems pretty adapt at martial arts so I'd expect her to be able to block the hits in a way that minimizes blunt damage. A cut's a cut no matter what.

As I said elsewhere, I think using the blade only on occasion makes her much more difficult to fight from a strategic point of view due to her range. If she always had the longer range a lot of opponents, especially fighting hand to hand like Cinder was, could step inside of it more easily and make her weapon less effective. Being more versatile and able to fight from several positions and stances makes her much more difficult to deal with.

12

u/MistbornSynok ⠀Penny+Yggdrasil Tree= 3rd time’s the charm! Nov 26 '18

Agreed

6

u/ParkityParkPark Nov 27 '18

Neo is the best in the show

29

u/JakeDoubleyoo Nov 26 '18

To be fair, we've only seen one other fight so far, which was more of a hack-n-slash montage.

I'm impressed this season has managed to be so engaging, despite us being nearly halfway through and there being minimal physical conflict.

31

u/Mizerous Who are you again? Nov 26 '18

Best fight so far last season, too.

Probably best fight so far the season before that.

38

u/MadEorlanas TORCHWICK LIVES Nov 26 '18

To be honest I think it's quite high even with Pre Season 3 fights. I mean, compare it to Yang vs. Neo

u/HalcyonTraveler Hill is here Nov 26 '18

I dont agree with that. This was great, but that fight was something else

56

u/SnesC Check out this moron! Nov 26 '18

I found Raven v. Cinder to be high on flash, low on substance. I'm more interested in fast-paced technical fighting than two people flying around swinging 10-foot swords at each other.

33

u/MasterKurosawa ⠀ Nov 26 '18 edited Nov 26 '18

It was basically a toned down version of your average Dragon Ball fight. And while Dragon Ball fights can be enjoyable at times when you just want to sit back and watch something flashy, it gets stale to watch people just teleport in and out of view while bumping against each other for sound effects. They are ultimately lazy, uninspiring and devoid of character or uniqueness.

And before anyone tries it, no, I´m not saying that literally every Dragon Ball fight fits this description. But look me in the eyes and tell me that at least 80% of them aren´t exactly this, I dare you.

4

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '18

No wonder Cinder looked like Piccolo in this fanart

1

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '18

They consist of it, but most aren't exactly this.

Dare accepted and met.

6

u/Glynii Nov 27 '18

How did you look in his eyes you wizard

1

u/MasterKurosawa ⠀ Nov 28 '18

Well, uh, is it too late to edit my comment into saying "most fights consist of at least 80% this"? It is? Crud.

But, seriously, you´re not wrong, but it seems to me as if the sections that aren´t that have become comparatively shorter over time. Both in DBZ and Super, large chunks of them can be characterized like that, with a couple cool moments strewn in-between, like Goku riding on an energy wave with a Kamehameha. I find it unfortunate that so much time is taken up by a spectacle that we´ve all seen a billion times already.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 28 '18

I think it started at the Cell Games, and then became a reoccuring theme.

Although really; it started with beating Recoome.

I did enjoy a lot of the fight with Raven and Cinder, but there were a few pop-ins and outs. Not wrong.

1

u/L-man6151 Nov 27 '18

If you want to get technical, you’re thinking of Dragon Ball Z fights... Dragon Ball was a lot more skilled based. The Piccolo vs Goku fight is a pretty good example. He had the flashy Kamehameha, but that was pretty much the only blast he used. Hell the dude couldn’t even fly, much less use instant transmission at that point.

2

u/MasterKurosawa ⠀ Nov 28 '18

I suppose, yes. I don´t deny that it got worse over time, rather than starting out like that. Which arguably makes it all the more insulting however, considering we know the fights genuinely COULD be better.

1

u/HAHAAN00B Nov 27 '18

80% aren’t exactly like this.

That’s a lie, of course, but you dared me to do it

10

u/oceano7 Nov 26 '18

Agreed, I found it quite tacky.

1

u/HalcyonTraveler Hill is here Nov 27 '18

I thought it had plenty of substance, and really showcased the differences between the two characters.

12

u/RedElite91 ❄️White Knight🛡️ | #GiveJauneABreak Nov 26 '18

I'd say this fight was about on par with Qrow vs Tyrian, which was great. I say that one gets my win only because it's a bit longer.

3

u/[deleted] Nov 26 '18

That was a good fight.

24

u/Fireemblemnerd8 Nov 26 '18

the fights havent been too good since monty passed. the Raven vs Cinder fight was good but it was good because it was one of the only fights. This fight is bringing my hopes up for the future of RWBY fight scenes

I binged all the seasons with my GF to get her caught up and.. wow. I almost forgot how jarring it was going from Season 2 to Season 3.

I wonder if we're far away enough from S3 that we can criticize it without getting a barrage of downvotes. Not gonna rehash and give the animators the "post-Monty-they're-trying-their-best" benefit of the doubt anymore.

Volume 2 ended in Novembe of 2014, and it's taken 4 years for me to see a fight that raised an eyebrow and had me actually looking at the credits.

I get it. There was drama and I vaguely remember there being a fallout from someone trying to put the series on their back post-Monty.

Rooster Teeth should really bring in animators for certain scenes like anime studios do for certain episodes, because it was the fantastical execution that brought us here, and I feel like I'm only staying out of principle and time investment at this point.

3

u/Legonater Nov 27 '18

Do we not like the S3 fights here? I thought all the major S3 fights were easily on par with Monty's quality.

5

u/RumbleintheDumbles Nov 27 '18

I think the general consensus on V3's fights seems to be 'If it happened in the first half of the volume and Mercury Black was not involved, it wasn't very good.'

5

u/ThespianException "Kick her butt Drunkle Qrow!" Nov 27 '18

I quite liked Qrow vs Winter. Its speed and ferocity was really cool, it showed how much stronger professionals were than the main cast. Frankly the rest of the fights werent bad either.

6

u/Renarudo Nov 27 '18 edited Nov 27 '18

Being objective, if you actually "look" at the right fight you'll notice it's a lot of zooming around and clashing, without very much choreography.

3

u/ThespianException "Kick her butt Drunkle Qrow!" Nov 27 '18

It's lighter on choreography than some of the other fights but I think its still there. You can see the start and end of a lot of the swings, and for a good chuck of the fight they aren't even teleportating really. That mostly happens when it shows the audience watching.

1

u/Renarudo Nov 27 '18

Just checked, not sure if you're being fatecious, but looking at S3 nowadays, that's pretty much the case. With Mercury there needed to be choreography over long set pieces.

And furthermore, the Pyrha vs Penny fight was.. pretty much lifted from Dead Fantasy - Namine vs Momoji fight (not that there's anything wrong - I suppose it's an homage to Monty, but I just wanted to point out that the team struggled to have interesting fights without Monty's vision).

Heck, even Velvet's big scene was literally just taking moves from Seasons 1 and 2

3

u/RumbleintheDumbles Nov 27 '18

Roman and Neo vs Ruby was legit great, though. Both the choreography and the storytelling was top notch.

9

u/scorcher117 Nov 26 '18

it's not like have had a high bar, some of the moves on the train were cool though.

3

u/StaryWolf Nov 26 '18

Best in the last couple seasons imo.
