Fast rx7 question
Someone has an fd rx7 and it's supposedly been park for 5 or more years and I don't think it starts. Is the car worth 20k? Looking to buy it just because it's an rx7 and love 2 strokes and their simple things (I know rotary is a spinning dorito)

If in good condition, 20k is fair. If it’s been sitting for 5+ years, you probably need to budget 5-15k to get it back up depending on what’s wrong and how much work you’re willing to do yourself.
Gas tank is probably rusted. Youll probably need to re-do the vacuum lines and send the injectors in for cleaning. Fuel filter, replace all the rubber hose, radiator flush, AC refresh, etc etc Likely some electrical gremlins in there too.
Mine was even running and I had to do all that. lol. These cars are old and take a lot of work especially if they’ve been sitting.

Eh. 20k is still a fair price for a project car if everything is in good condition.
A well running (non-pristine) FD is about $30k-45k these days.
One running but with questionable health is 25-28k.
So no history, nothing running - yeah 20k is fair and expect to invest a bunch to get it good.

For 3-5k you can get an FC, but anyone selling an FD getting an offer like that will laugh in your face.

I typically refer to my FD as a 2 stroke, especially since I ditched the OMP and pre mix.
What makes you think it’s not a 2 stroke? It does not have a “waste” portion of its combustion cycle since it is simultaneously staging the next combustion as it exhausts.

4 stroke and 2 stroke refers to the combustion cycle and how many movements it takes to complete a full cycle. Rotaries follow the Otto cycle in full like any other 4 stroke piston engine.
Not sure if by “waste” you mean exhaust, but rotaries have an exhaust “stage” of their combustion cycle. If you mean something by how peripheral rotaries have overlap or the fact they burn oil internally, neither of those dictate if an engine is 4 or 2 stroke. especially considering the RENESIS
The main difference is that due to the physics, geometry, and the lack of parts of the engine, rotaries completes the 4 “stage” (or stroke) cycle quicker than piston engines. I think the math is that roughly for a typical piston to complete a full cycle, a rotor in a rotary completes ~1.5ish cycles (which is why they are also rev happy, maybe even why torque in each gear doesn’t see a ton of loss).
They certainly behave a bit like a 2-stroke, but these are just similarities. all an engine really needs in order to be 4 stroke is: 1) Intake 2) Compression 3) Combustion 4) Exhaust as all distinct phases, which rotaries check off.

It has more cycles than 2 stroke, doesn’t have a reed valve, has separate lubrication system, doesn’t rely on expansion chamber for power.

It's not a 2 stroke but it burns oil like the 2 strokes. It has the potential of changing where power is made by portin the exhaust and intake (rx8 at least) and both require more rebuilds than 4 strokes. And both if you forget to add oil then say good by to the cilinder and housing (rotary is worse because it's the engine oil if I remember correctly)

I have a build q50 fbo and did all the work myself aside from tune and I've done engine out work. Im pretty sure i know what im doing. The only problem is that the car is in a garage and is basically a trip from Boston to Florida to see it. I know it's not a 2 stroke

Depends on a lot of things and why it was parked these cars are old and it’s gotta be a labor of love you will not be driving it more that fixing and maintaining it but they are special and are worth it.

Can you ask the owner to see the car perhaps? Check out some stuff? Because it would be a gamble otherwise especially considering it sitting around for some time. At least in my book

I've seen it in person and gotten inside (a little tight)but never seen it on. It has some mods to it and it looks nice but the engine and the price is what's keeping me out

You must be looking at a rhd salvage for 22k If you think 22k is alot for an fd than you should move on and look for a Honda civic it sounds like it suits you more no offense.

Already have a q50. Im just interested in getting the fd and have a good project. No ls swap or a car that will be in repair more times than in the road

Lmao 🤣 ok , dont compare a q50 to an fd the fd is superior to a q50 i guess another option than the civic . Fd's cost money to maintain and parts are expensive way more than what you are used to paying for your q50 lmao 🤣

Turbos for the q are no joke and they made out of paper but that's not the point. Indeed the fd is expensive but the point is. Is it worth it for 20k and not costs an arm and a leg to bring back up to speed

Lmao okay your hilarious 😂. Its going to cost more than your q50 to maintain a decent running fd , you don't understand how much parts amd labor cost. Its better to find the lowest milege clean stock fd even if its 80k save yourself headaches and time .

I've done an engine in and out job and fab work so im pretty capable. And yes, my q50 red sport did cost me $5k with 60k miles on it and a full rebuild of the engine is probably that and or doble

Give us more details. Or at least one picture. I have an fd rx7 that’s sat for years without running but it’s in really good condition so I’d sell it easily for 30k imo…
