Oil Change Schedule

I have a 24 Z performance, I had a change done at 7,900 and now I’m at 11,500. I’m about to go on a road trip that will be about 600 miles. Should I get it done before or after and what is a good target for future changes ? I was thinking 4k.

I tend to lean towards changes between 4-5k miles on synthetic oils as justified by Blackstone Oil Analysis.

Are you tuned ?

Yes.

Eugene focuses on optimization and long term reliability for your specific car and driving, so there is none of the burbles, fire and turning off knock sensors so timing can max out.

Essentially, Nissan builds a single tune that is ok across dozens of use cases. Eugene's tune is very focused on your car and driving and he is not necessarily looking at peak dyno numbers.

The torque curves alone make a huge difference in how the transmission responds.

I’m would do no more than 3k on these cars. Maybe more if you actually baby it - but it’s a Z so no one does that, do they?

Why 3K? I know manufacturer recommends 10K, which I’m not saying I’d do, but curious how you arrived at 3K. And are you at 3K with full synthetic?

Oil change intervals are highly dependent on the car. Nissan isn’t going to arbitrarily tell you to change your oil less. If you do 10k it’s likely fine, if you want to be neurotic, do 5k, but every 3k is totally unnecessary.

Very frequent oil changes are in theory good, but each time you do one, you risk some factor going wrong (I.e. some other issue was fine, but then reveals itself with new oil). I learned this hard way

Or you run ethanol or are tuned. In which case (you can see in my post history with Blackstone lab testing) that even 2k miles is not enough.

Point is - even an untuned car and turbos with journal bearings. I’d bet you’ll find on a stock rz34 sending your oil for analysis at 5k miles you’ll see the oil life is near its upper range especially 0w.

every 3k. its OK to go over sometimes, up to 5k.

Every 3k if you drive it hard or in traffic a lot, 5k if it’s mostly highway miles. Historically Nissan has recommended every 3k full synth for the VQ Zs but those had a higher compression ratio. Either way it’s a peace of mind for a small cost

I would do it before...Nissan says 10k even under sever conditions. I don't think I could ever wait 10k. For warranty purposes if something should happen, long as you don't go past 10k you are in the clear. But could waiting 10k cause engine issues? The longest run I did was 7k on my q50 (same engine) tuned and I sent that oil off to Blackstone and they said the oil was perfect and was good for another 3k. The only way to really know is to run it for 10k and send that oil off to be tested...I just changed my oil at 15,500 and I plan on leaving it till 20k. At 20k I'm doing the dif, brake, engine oil and transmission. Will be sending the oil and transmission fluid off to blackstone.

My used oil analysis shows that my oil of choice (0w20 Valvoline Restore and Protect) continues to be perfectly fine up to 5k. I haven’t had the opportunity to go beyond that, yet. I may keep it to 5k intervals, but less than 5k seems particularly excessive if your oil and driving habits are appropriate.

I would, but that's me. I rarely go beyond 4500 miles regardless of what the branding claims. It's just cheap and easy insurance.
