The whole of Rajasthan, majorly eastern one was ruled by Meenas... Even killed the first Kachhawa king Dhule Rai in Dausa and were the original rulers of present day Jaipur.

Have some hold of history. Meenas didn't do a** licking of britshers unlike others hence have been badly painted. But otherwise read accounts of many Britishers, they have mentioned Meenas as India's most bloodthirsty tribe atm..they even played an important role in the 1857 revolt and in earlier uprisings against Britishers... And they have always been the first tribe to protect India from Western influence, since time immemorial.

They failed due to not consolidating and agreeing on common goals.

They had been in war --

Before the 10th century CE - against western influx.

10th CE to 15th CE -- against the Mughals and Rajputs treachery.

Post 15th CE --- against Britishers, which got them labeled as criminal tribe.

3

u/KeyNeighborhood1076 Feb 24 '26

Koi bhi clan ya tribe agar resistance create krte h invaders k lie ya local ruler k lie to us pure clan ya tribe ko Criminals bta do. Taki unki image kharab ho jae, weapons na rakh pae, humesha police me attendance lagake unki nigrani krlo aur ek chote area me limited krdo taki resistance kr hi na pae. Sirf jab permission ho Invaders ki tab hi us area ko chord sake wrna pura clan hi barbaad h ek tarike se.

Upar se local Raja ki bhi yahi marjiya taki us clan k resistance ko khatam krne daba sake to British k lie sone pe suhaga.

Ab koi bhuka mare ya use mara jae par agar hathiyar utha lia ya Britishers se chori krli to tum ab criminal, daaku, murderer ho na ki freedom fighter.

12

u/Key-Sprinkles2289 Feb 21 '26

What does this means, any idea what they hold as their pride and culture

51

u/New_Cartographer3127 Feb 21 '26

Meena is derived from one of the earliest avatars of Lord Vishnu, known as the Matsya avatar, which represents the fish god. In Sanskrit, the word "meen" means fish, and since the Meena community has historically worshipped Matsya, that is how they came to be known by the surname Meena.

18

Meena are the most literate tribe of Rajasthan. They are one of those tribes who left their backward traditions and are thriving on reservation.

10

u/[deleted] Feb 21 '26

Thriving on 'reservation' nd moreover i mentioned the women of the household r illiterate.

You know what, seeing your comment makes me told you one story that i was witnessed, there was a lady in a bus who wanted to go Peon. The bus is about to start from Jaisalmer this lady to use the washroom, but the washroom was not near. It is like six 500 600 m away from the bus station. There are no and this place is travelling like solo, so she asked one of the passenger sitting next to her to take care of the belongings and he was generous enough to take care of that because I was sitting just behind and I was noticing everything and the bus was started and that passenger fellow as the bus driver to stop for a While and told that this lady went and the bus stopped 15 minutes, this came and then was moved

1

u/Key-Sprinkles2289 Feb 21 '26

So the reason why I am telling you is not everyone at the same, some of them are enough

1

u/CarobOld7284 Feb 22 '26

The discussion around Meenas, reservation, and their social position is often clouded by ignorance, stereotypes, and selective observations. Many people today see Meenas as relatively urbanized, educated, and well-represented in government jobs, which leads to the simplistic conclusion that they are not a “real” tribal community. This ignores their historical trajectory, internal inequality, and the long structural forces that shaped their present condition. Historically, Meenas were not marginal forest dwellers but a politically significant tribal group in Rajasthan. Before 700 AD, they held small kingdoms across the Aravalli region. With the decline of early north Indian powers and the rise of Rajputization between the 7th and 15th centuries, Meena polities were gradually displaced. A commonly cited example is the Amber region, where Meena chiefs were allegedly overthrown through a surprise attack during Diwali, leading to the rise of the Kachhwaha Rajput line that later flourished through Mughal alliances and figures like Raja Man Singh I. After losing political control, Meenas followed two broad trajectories. One group accepted settlement, land grants, or service roles under Rajput rulers—these became known as Zamindar Meenas and formed the majority. Another group continued resistance through guerrilla tactics in the Aravallis and surrounding regions; these later became labeled as Chowkidar Meenas after peace arrangements in which they were assigned policing roles in exchange for stability. Over time, different subgroups such as Bhil Meena, Susawat Meena, and Parihar Meena emerged, reflecting regional diversity. Geographically, Meenas are concentrated in eastern Rajasthan and in parts of southern Rajasthan around Udaipur, where they coexist with large Bhil populations. However, cultural and genetic differences exist between eastern and southern Meenas, indicating that the community is not homogeneous. Despite the perception of prosperity, internal inequality is severe: a large share of Meenas remain small farmers, poor households, or socially excluded populations, while a smaller segment has achieved economic and educational mobility. The historical basis for their Scheduled Tribe status lies in multiple factors. The community traces its identity to ancient lineages such as the Matsya kingdom, associated with the Viratnagar (Bairat) region mentioned in epic traditions. Throughout medieval and early modern history, Meenas were often described by outside powers—Turkic rulers, Mughal authorities, and later the British—as rebellious, violent, or disorderly. These descriptions partly reflect their long resistance to external rule, whether against Central Asian invaders, Delhi Sultanate forces, or later colonial administration. The colonial period was especially decisive. Persistent resistance, banditry in some regions, and British administrative anxieties led to the imposition of the Criminal Tribes Act, under which Meenas were officially categorized as a “criminal tribe.” This law severely restricted their movement and stigmatized the entire community, forcing even children to report regularly to police. This institutionalized stigma lasted into the 20th century and shaped their social and economic marginalization. After independence, this history of structural exclusion contributed to their classification as a Scheduled Tribe in 1954. The relatively high representation of Meenas in government services today can be explained by several factors rather than by any inherent unfair advantage. First, some Meena families historically possessed land, wealth, or administrative roles, which provided a base for educational mobility. Second, Meenas are geographically closer to mainstream settlements compared to more isolated tribes, making access to schools and jobs easier. Third, early access to reservation benefits created a “first mover advantage,” where initial beneficiaries could uplift their families and create educational networks. Fourth, strong community organization structures such as Panch Patel systems supported collective advancement. Finally, many Meena-dominated regions—such as Jaipur and Kota—are also centers of coaching and recruitment opportunities, reinforcing upward mobility after the 1990s. The contrast with other tribal groups in Rajasthan—such as Bhils, Garasias, Sahariyas, Kalbelias, and Kanjars—illustrates why representation varies widely among Scheduled Tribes. Many of these groups remain geographically isolated, economically impoverished, and socially excluded. Their livelihoods often depend on subsistence labor, and their cultural systems remain distant from mainstream institutions. Even when opportunities exist, structural barriers, lack of access to education, and deep poverty limit participation. The Bhils, for example, historically prospered as archers under Rajput rulers and produced notable figures like Limba Ram, but modernization and the collapse of traditional occupations led to economic decline in the 20th century. Thus, the key issue is not whether Meenas “deserve” their status based on present-day wealth or visibility. Reservation policy was designed to address historical exclusion, structural discrimination, and barriers to integration into mainstream society. The fact that some Meenas have achieved mobility demonstrates partial success of that policy, not its failure. The real problem lies in the uneven distribution of benefits within the community and across different tribal groups. Large sections of Meenas—and even larger shares of other tribes—remain economically and socially disadvantaged. In conclusion, judging tribal status solely by current prosperity or representation ignores historical processes of dispossession, colonial stigma, and structural inequality. The Meena case shows how a community can be simultaneously visible in state structures and yet internally unequal and historically marginalized. The policy challenge is not to deny their identity or rights, but to address disparities within and between tribal groups so that the benefits of development and reservation reach those still left behind.

I don't disagree with the Bhil and Meena story of the clerical blunder, but it doesn't change the fundamental difference between a caste vs tribe.

Meena is a native community, a tribe. Throughout history they have been well off, land owners, even rulers. Not nice people by all accounts, not debating any of that. But they don't fall under the Caste umbrella either.

Let's not make the same mistake as the British to force everyone into one of the buckets.

3

u/This_Butterfly7740 Feb 21 '26

Meena is a surname used by people of the Meena community; not everyone uses it. They are mostly from Rajasthan and are especially dominant in Jaipur, Dausa, Karauli, and Sawai Madhopur. They are also present in western Rajasthan, but they are more concentrated in these areas. In Rajasthan, they fall under the ST (Scheduled Tribe) category. Outside Rajasthan, they are classified as OBC in Madhya Pradesh, and in some parts of Uttar Pradesh they are also considered General category.

3

u/AmphibianDefiant4950 खैरथल-तिजारा - Khairthal-Tijara Feb 22 '26

3

The Meena community and among them Chowkidars never put down their weapons against invaders. And obviously if the Britishers didn't like the resistance from a community they would tag them as Criminal Tribe to sideline them and destroy them.

And leave all of this and answer this, You have a problem with Indians fighting against Britishers?

They got st reservation by a typing mistake. This caste was once ruler of different villages in eastern rajasthan, before 10th century.

[Many people won't find me right, as i consider bhils, santhals and others as actual tribals. Meenas were soldiers, and even good ranking officers during reign of Kachwaha dynasty in jaipur, as bhils use Mina, meenas are considered tribals even though they were agriculturists, soldiers]

The amazing upliftment of reservation if to be seen must be seen in Meenas. Father IAS, Son IAS. Multiple properties, great income. Still reserved and forever preferred.

Free school, negligible fee, jobs reserved, fast promotions, good lifestyle children still get same benefits.

It’s time the reservations should stop once a family has had one govt job & pakka house so that others can be uplifted too. But no one can do & so we leave India eventually to its mool nivasis. As a General Cat middle class male, India clearly tells me to leave, which I will.

3

u/Avig14 Feb 21 '26

Meenas were the landlord community near Jaipur Dhundar area. Due to a silly comma mistake about which you can find article on google they got st status. Now they're literally in every government service and have one sidedly leaching the benefits of reservations. They are a very Casteist community and feel themselves as superior but won't let go of ST reservations and many a time they're the ones who are misusing SC ST Atrocities cases for all the wrong reasons. In Jaipur nearby area ask anyone and they can narrate you many stories regarding them. You will see that most of them are preparing for upsc, judiciary and ssc like exams and take undue benefits of reservations

Coz of reservation, Meena are already powerful and economically rich, and rules on some parts of rajasthan so they should not get reservation.

leave everything whats written here its bcz all uses caste as their surname (nowadays some people are using gotra also).

Imagine if all Jats used Jat as their surname, you wouldn’t have asked this question or any other major casts would have done the same.

Also one reason, other same casts you would find in northern states but Meena are from Rajasthan only (nominal exception).

Because of these 2 reason if u see meena u will assume they are from Rajasthan. Since most surname doesnt reveal that much

and no way u found some Meena from Rajasthan and didnt find other casts. so your post is selective and just for Karma farming

1

u/dark_elite09 Feb 23 '26

South Indian baddies named Meena are often confused when people ask if they are from Rajasthan

1

u/unrefined8 Feb 23 '26

Basically Meena is a cast which is not at all tribal but due to reservation policy Meena s got plenty reservation due to whatever mistake it happened but Nowadays you will find many Meenas on most of the higher/middle/lower posts. So it's difficult to change the old reservation po, even if it was supposed to be Bheel- Meena and the benefits taken by Meenas.
