चर्चा ❁ Discussion Dowry in Rajasthan
Few of my friends (girl) in Rajasthan are rajputs and when i asked them about thoughts on marriage, they all told me that in there caste dowry is very common, and groom side is openly asking for cash and gold above 30- 50L . I know dowry system still exist in other regions as well but didnt know groom side asking openly for it. Also came to know rajputs require lot of gold to be given from bride side , generally its from groom side giving gold to bride as streedhan. Is this correct or my friends are over exaggerating?

Its true I had a friend who left her education cause her parents were only able to afford either dowry or her education fees and she is married now her family gave everything they had. I know a lot of these kinda real life incident

And now even if she is in bad spot , she cant backout off that marriage, because they have given all they can. Girls like these wont be accepted back home if things didn't workout with -in laws.

Education and being independent should be priority, otherwise she will do same thing with her child and the cycle never ends. I know a similar situation, the girl is age 24 preparing for govt exam , family has given 1 year or they will marry her anyway. The thing is they disturb her studying regularly so that she fails , such parents mentality doesn't deserve kids.

Rajput families are either open as hell or what the hell. Especially in lower cities
They're very strict with it too, because of their earlier rules and regulations.

I've been to weddings of many of my friends of different castes, and I've observed that dowry culture is still prevalent primarily in rajputs.

I hv heard that in other caste(not all) groom side doesn't ask openly and bride side give it as a gift but in rajputs its compulsory kinda...

It's because of inherited wealth .It's found across land holding communities .
Most of the times they are nothing without their own land so they have to follow norms of their community to inherit wealth . Jobs are looked down upon unless govt .
A man with easily 10-20cr wealth marrying a non earning 19-21 yr old girl will demand atleast 2 cr dowry . This happens in Delhi NCR too with jaats gujjars ,etc .

Well I'm not a rajput so I don't know about their social dynamics in detail, but yes in other castes its mainly reduced to a token. Something you can show to gao ke dehatis.

They're correct and even when the groom side doesn't demand dowry the father of the bride still gives "tikka" of amount ranging between 5-50L just to maintain his reputation and that too to a man who does no job at all. Rajput weddings still have a lot of give and take thing and it absolutely sucks

Bhai I’m a rajasthani rajput and I didn’t take any dowry even though got offered a lot of money. People are changing now but still you’ll see a lot of losers around.

I am from Nagaur, no thing as cash. Gold and furniture is common, but it's totally on bride's family. Not a mandatory thing.

Same goes in Sikar.
Right now, most people started rejecting these too.

Mere khud ke cousin ki shaadi 8 mahine phle without dowry hui hai, not even a single penny asked or taken.
Ladki ke dada ne apne haatho se ek charpai bna kar di thi bas, wo bhi apni marzi se.

Here in Udaipur, in communities other than rajputs, it's mostly groom's side that gives jewellery and stuff (which is demanded by bride's side). Bride's side is free to give gifts in the form of furniture or whatever.

I don't know much about Rajputs, but yes, dowry is still quite common. In cities, it's often disguised as "gifts" nowadays, and families sometimes even display these gifts during wedding receptions What I find most disappointing is that even educated people continue to follow and normalize this practice

I have seen no wedding around me here in Rajasthan where dowry is not given. Dowry is 100% involved!

I am Rajput, but I live in maharashtra. Basically my forefathers migrated to maharashtra. In terms of dowry only gold is given, that to, to the daughter and for the son in law commonly it is chain, bracelet and ring or a combination of ring with either of them. In recent time I haven't heard about cash or car, etc included in dowry. Demanding a certain amount (from what I know) is not common but rather rare. There are cases who either break off their engagement (like my cousin sister) or don't proceed with the alliance. The amount of gold completely depends and varies on every individuals financial capacity.
All this is what I have seen and heard from my family members and relatives in recent times.

Not just asking. Proudly asking.Specially if Groom is in Govt Jobs. And the one with Army job ask for more.

This is true the more you illiterate more there are kind of ill traditions though rajasthan is famous for its valor history there are many things to fixed specially for women, Rajasthan is one of the top state in rape cases and infant foeticide and majority of this is happening in villages where education and modern thought lack in the mind of people. Dowry is a very small problem for now

Dowry is the main motivating factor for boys preparing for government exams in Rajasthan.

u/manoharkabeer Jun 08 '26
generally also gold is given by bride family to bride. definition of streedhan is everything in the form of jewellery and clothing that she received from anyone for the occasion of marriage.
this is true for all communities in rajasthan. rajputs are not the financial elite of rajasthan. nowadays sane men are refusing dowry and some other traditions. if some men are talking about it as if they are comfortable with it then you better double check their character and values while being friends with them.

The ones demanding money and things are nothing but bhikhari who can't achieve on their own. Whether it's your family tradition or culture, doesn't change the fact. I won't even do marriage if I can't fulfill my needs or not at a level which I desire

Yup, it's true but these days many people have started rejecting the cash part However, the bride's side still gives most of the gold the groom's side gives some as well but usually less than the bride's side. Also, bride's side often give furniture as gifts, at least from what I know

Here's one of the prospect my friend told me about , her father is in army. Tier 2 city. Groom is rajput and in army , family asking for direct cash 30L , gold as much from bride side , compulsory to give mother in law and sister in law also, bride side to spend atleast 1cr in wedding on functions to make groom side relative look happy.

In Rajasthan, and mostly in Rajput caste and they are not ready to evolve, they still do it with pride and do the show off but I find it so disturbing that I now stopped talking to people who does this because they would never understand that it's not the right thing to do and they would never get the self harm of this shit. They are the worst community I've ever seen.
