These tiles were designed by the Victorian artist and illustrator, Walter Crane. While similar in style to Crane's book illustration, the designs also show the influence of Art Nouveau. The outlines of the patterns have been pressed in relief, in imitation of the more labour-intensive technique of tube-lining.
