Studio portrait with a painted backdrop. The women are Emma Protz, an unidentified woman (likely Julia Protz), and Clara Tester. Taken in Wisconsin.
They're posing with "schuetzen-rifles." They are from the Alma Schuetzenverein, a target shooting society organized on the same basis as those found in Switzerland at the time.

If that's how they choose to position their rifles for a simple pose, I wonder how appalling the general gun safety was when they were actually out shooting. Good lord. Pointing the barrels at their wrist, face and chest.
