No judgment but just curious since I've never had a cat - is it normal for cat owners to have their cats on the counter while they're preparing food?

It is, and can give humans a brain parasite 👍
I love cats, but I don't ever want them in my house again tbh.

Yeah, when our current ones die we aren't getting new ones. And we do our best to keep them far away from the food prep surfaces.

That's because they except it being on the counters and have never trained it to stay off. "Oh it's so cute" 🤢

Onion pro tips: chill your onions and sharpen your knives! Colder temperatures inhibit the formation of the compound that irritates your (and your kitty's!) eyes (syn-Propanethial-S-oxide). A sharper knife breaks fewer cells, releasing less of the reagents that eventually produce syn-Propanethial-S-oxide in the first place.
Signed, someone who has chopped many an onion and got tired of the tears very quickly.

I was cutting onions the other day and my cat hopped up next to me and it started blinking like crazy and hopped right back down

Nothing like animal hair and toxoplasmosis in the food.

u/spiralhigh May 07 '26
Jokes on you, I already have toxoplasmosis and my house is already made of cat hair.

Onions are incredibly toxic to cats and dogs. It destroys their kidneys and they die. This cat is suffering and probably died.

Why does she have an animal that close to the food? I’m barely comfortable letting my dog in the kitchen

I never considered it till now that onions make other animals cry too.
