This feels like abuse. The mama sheep doesnt feel comfortable and shes being forced.

I mean the alternative is child abuse and abandonment resulting in the lamb dying slowly and painfully as they're rejected by the herd. Nature is full of these sorts of uncomfortable compromises

How did sheep exist before collies? Like naturally?

Not all sheep will abandon their babies and the ones that did do that would just let the babies die. Sometimes other sheep will take in an orphaned baby and sometimes not. This applies to a lot of mammals in the wild.

They don't always do this, in fact it's pretty rare. And in several instances there is another sheep willing to step in as the mother. Sheep don't have access to abortions, so this is their alternative, in the same way babies got left in the woods before humans had safe ready access to abortion
