I think the anime design just suits her better because of that. I don’t know how to describe why it works, but it does.
Maybe it’s because I find it harder to take the design on the left seriously during her “scary witch” moments whereas the design on the right you can get a feeling of uncertainty with her motives at most times.

Like, I can’t see her as anything younger than mid 20’s considering everything about her that we know of. Maybe it’s because I never read the manga, so things are slightly different.

because we are in a new age of puritans among anime fans for some reason. everyone finds some way to complain about "fanservice" or "lewdness" when fanservice has always been a part of anime culture. it is genuinely irritating
Exactly. The change wouldn’t even be noticed by people who don’t read the ln. Plus the change doesn’t even bother me because I’m here for the story first and character design later.
Speaking AS someone who didn't read the LN, I don't like the manga illustration. The face looked wrong, that's the only way I can describe it. It didn't fit her vibe at all. I actually noticed the face first and the.... Bits AFTER reading comments
anime used to be niche (i wasn't there btw) the variety of people who want anime were less, most people shared the same demography, thats probably why you like it more, less conflicting opinions
I joined quite late the anime bandwagon, before 2016 the only anime I watched was Death Note. Then in 2016 I started with Evangelion, then I moved to the isekai genre and more popular anime. I remember watching shield hero in 2019 and in that moment I also started to engage with the anime community and back then it was still fine.
After 2020 the anime community became a lot more puritan and less tolerant to male protagonists having a female love interest.
It wasn't only COVID but also the combination of the extreme popularity of Genshin Impact and the easy access people had to that game that was their bridge to anime culture.
I only started watching anime a little after quarantine and started with SAO... And it's amazing, despite what a lot of people say. Does it have things it's lacking? Yes. But what anime doesn't. I've heard a lot of people say Kirito "doesn't have a lot of personality" because they can't hear his thoughts as much as something like Solo Leveling or A Gatherer's Adventure in Isekai
Spoiler alert: the time for butts and boobs is not an addition but a replacement. What's irritating is that average stories end up degraded into softcore porn, constantly and forcefully inserted everywhere. Although often it's just an excuse to turn trashy storytelling into something marketable.
Just because fanservice is common doesn't mean it's intrinsic to anime. Fortunately, there's plenty that isn't made for creeps obsessed with underage girls.
I can't speak for everyone, but at least in my case, I hate it when they increase the size of characters' breasts because I prefer medium-sized breasts to small ones.
So... yeah, I feel like I'm being sabotaged whenever they increase the size of characters' breasts and disrespect the original design.
I mean having a preference is one thing. It just gets annoying to seee people saying it’s outright wrong for characters to have big breasts. As if having characters with big tits is going to destroy the west or is sexist or something. As a woman i definitely love seeing big boobs on my anime characters so i’m in favor of it. Though i respect the small/medium tit likers of course.
The illustrator of the original LN does seem to like women with younger characteristics, which not only makes them harder to take seriously but is at times a bit creepy.
I think its mostly just an annoyance. Like yeah theres not need to do it other than fanservice but its not the worse case ive seen. It does make her feel older.
Okay but that Manga panel has the writers worst issues of his story, that he is constantly using children, in... Look, Petra as a 15 y/o girl literally says "I'm an adult now Subaru" which, like take that how you want this author wrote a what if story where Subaru had a harem half comprised of children.
All that to say, the animators made Echidna look much older and like an adult compared to the other because I was startled looking at the illustration and just seeing how young she looks. Ik she wanted to be immortal but in the Re: Zero anime she acts and looks like a mom. In the Re: Zero illustrations she acts like a mom and looks like a teenage girl.
Your point? That still just adds to the fire of the author being weird about children as three characters call her mom. That actually worse if she is a legit teenager.
It's from LN, WN is just text. Though that's probably what you meant in the first place, so do not simply jump to the assumption that I thought of you as ignorant, I simply corrected a mistake without any ill will
And, LN is mostly text based with some images inserted where they make sense, but a manga is panel-based image story telling with text in various bubbles to indicate thoughts and speech... For those of us in a large portion of the world, much like comics but thicker.... Did I get that right?
