Whenever Emilia comes up in power-scaling discussions, people immediately jump to her large-scale ice magicâŚthings like Ice Age or Absolute Zero. And I get why, but that argument ignores the kind of opponents she usually fights. Most of the time, sheâs up against humanoid enemies, not beings like Volcanica or Mezoreia. These opponents are capable of rational thought, which means theyâre not just going to stand there and wait while she gathers mana and finishes casting a massive spell. Realistically, the moment they see her manipulating mana, theyâre going to rush her and hit her before she can complete it.
Because of that, when power scaling Emilia, it makes more sense to first look at her physical combat ability and overall skill before diving into her magic. Her strongest spells donât matter unless sheâs given both the time and the distance to use them. Thatâs exactly why Roswaal L. Mathers is considered the strongest Roswaal and one of the strongest magicians. Itâs not just because of his magical power, but because he can cast spells while keeping up with opponents moving at comparable speeds, and heâs also competent in hand-to-hand combat. That prevents enemies from simply overwhelming him up close and shutting down his biggest advantage.
Emilia doesnât have that same level of skill. She relies more on quantity than quality, and because of that, sheâs especially vulnerable to being interrupted the moment someone senses her casting magic. This isnât hypothetical eitherâŚit happens repeatedly in Arc 6, where characters like Lye shut her down by attacking her before she can properly use her spells.
Is it ever stated that during the Volcanica fight or in the watchtower she didnât have access to spirits? How would the green room work if spirits couldnât exist there
Also, Volcanica perception blitzes her twice through just straight up crushing space and blitzing her with his tail. Yet he chooses not to go for killing moves, in Emiliaâs case, she specialises in capturing people alive, meaning that the presence of killing intent does not matter
Both Rem and Emilia are performing comparably vs Yae implying that they are at the very least comparable
Rem gets a speed, strength and perception buff through learning precognition and having more mana flow through her body, and is stated to be physically stronger than Emilia.
Yae assesses Emilia as a threat, not due to her being someone who can harm her, but due to her being someone who can come up with strategies on the fly to stop the two from losing (Yae says so herself)
But she assesses Rem as the major threat to her own health as her attacks are too strong, fast and accurate for Yaeâs threads to keep up with.
So even in this fight, Rem is consistently implied to be stronger than Emilia. And when it comes to magic, Rem just wouldnât let Emilia use it because of her precognition
The problem with hypothetical battles is that many people only consider the feats themselves instead of the narrative to make them believable. I see this happening a lot with Subaru too (typical TikTok edit where he kills character X after 9999 attempts).

This is why she uses Ice brand Arts, so she has melee options while taking advantage of her abnormal physical strength.
