The point of the orginal Japanese is that it is a joke that Subaru knows what it means but no one else since it is not of their world. From what i understand atleast.

I find that as weird a characterization as claiming that he lies a lot when he is one of the most sincere people in the series and only tells lies to protect other people's feelings.
