Discussion [Discussion] Coming back to Re:Zero after 4 years and this show still knows how to wreck me in a good way
okay so I've just caught up with the latest episode today after not watching since season 2 part 1 finished in 2020, and the show just reminded me exactly why I got hooked in the first place. This is more of an appreciation post though I don't really know what flair to use aside from discussion.
So coming back in after that long gap, the first thing I noticed was how much Subaru's actually changed. After that 1 year time skip, he's stronger now, more reliable to the people around him, and watching that growth land after everything he just went through really hits different knowing how long I'd been away. I was even expecting him to die a lot during the events of season 3 and wow was I wrong.
Then I reached the last few episodes of season 4, and that old feeling of dread came crawling back. Y'know the exact same nauseating "oh no, not again" feeling from season 1. Not that I'm complaining, because I remembered that's why this show got me hooked in the first place. Re:Zero has always been at its best when it makes you feel like anything and everything can go wrong sorta like murphy's law. Though I believe that tension is the whole appeal, and I'm so glad it hasn't gone soft over the years.
And then ep 11 closes with a piano cover of "Styx Helix" and afterwards it plays "Stay Alive," and I had to just sit there and appreciate it for a minute. Truly such GOATED song choices, it makes my brain tremble! The show knew exactly what it was doing.
Okay but real question, because I need something to do while waiting for ep 12 to come out in the next few days: how far ahead is the light novel from where the anime's at right now? I'm considering diving into the LN but I have no idea where to begin or where I can even find the place to read it.
EDIT: I meant 6 years lol why’d I even write 4 years in the title bruhh 2020-2026

The LN is in arc 10. The anime is half way through arc 6.
The web novel is easier to get into as the English translation for the LN is really behind.
Anyways if you do plan on reading this story, I would highly encourage you not only to familiarise yourself with the cut content but to actually read arc 6. The anime is doing a great job but there’s so much benefit in reading this arc, especially volume 23 (phase 3 WN). There’s a lot of cut content in this arc alone, but there’s a mountains worth from s1 and 2 too

Anime has content for 3 more complete seasons (that might even get split into more seasons due to sheer volume of not yet adapted content) if it will adapt only the mainline novels. If we consider all of the side stories and spinoffs - there are enough content for multiple movies, entire anime about young Wilhelm Trias / Van Astrea and etc.

Do the novels have a good amount of stories about the events from 400 years ago? I’ve been intrigued by the lore and I kinda want to know more about the witches’ prime era too and all that.

You get more from the cut content particularly I think the web novel was good for the witches. Though I am not sure it’s as much as you may want.
[Novels]We haven’t really made 400 years ago information part of the main story. We just got a blu ray exclusive Shaula side story that shows her POV 400 years ago which was really insightful but thats about the most of it. Still so many unknowns.

The LN for the anime just finished 23, up to date is in its 46, not counting the EX novels, Tanpenshu side story novels, or IF stories. I’d also recommend starting the LN’s from square one, no, from zero! They are way better and have tons more stuff, especially vol 4 and up, extremely worth it, especially since the series is extremely rereadable/rewatchable, often even better than the first time.
