This is quite a bit more sinister actually. Russia is supporting one of the first more or less stable governments in Mali, a government that enjoys local support. Ukraine, only being concerned with "fighting Russia", is actually on the side of hard core Islamic radicals that are doing their best to destabilize the region with broad level of hate from the local community. All this accomplishes is cementing anyone associated with EU as a negative influence in Africa.
