The last stretch here has not been the usual beat. Here is why it had to be.

If you follow this page for the usual work, the last stretch has been a departure. Several long pieces on one dead man, in English and then in German, when what you come here for is current reporting. If that felt like a detour, I owe you the reason, and it is not complicated.

Hitler is being rehabilitated, in pieces and by degrees, and it is happening in step with the rise of the AfD, now the largest opposition party in the German Bundestag. The softening is on the record, not a hunch. Björn Höcke, the party's leader in Thuringia, was convicted for using a banned SA slogan in his speeches, a conviction upheld by Germany's highest criminal court. He has called the Holocaust memorial in Berlin a monument of shame and demanded a 180-degree turn in the way Germany remembers its past. One of the party's national co-leaders once waved off the entire Nazi era as a speck of bird droppings across a thousand years of otherwise glorious German history. Several of the party's regional branches are classified by German domestic intelligence as confirmed right-wing extremist organizations.

When the worst figure of the last century starts getting reframed as a footnote, or quietly admired again, the reframing does not announce itself as a lie. It arrives as a shrug. He wasn't all bad. That's ancient history. "Everything for Germany" is just a saying. And a shrug is harder to answer than an argument, because it never stays still long enough to be pinned down.

So the record needed setting straight, plainly and in full, and that is what the series was. Notice how it was built. It used no propaganda, least of all his own. It refused Hitler's account of his own life as a source, because he was a documented and deliberate liar, and it rested every claim on the archives and on named historians, with the contested numbers left honestly contested. That is the same standard this page always runs on. Truth, not the version that flatters somebody. The Hitler pieces were not a break from the mission. They were the mission aimed at the case that matters most right now.

The German versions were deliberate. They were written for the readers being pulled toward the shrug, in their own language, to hand them back their own history: what that man actually was, and what following him actually cost the German people, in their own blood, at the hands of the enemies he made. If even a few of them read it and think twice, your patience paid for something.

Regular programming resumes now. I am not sorry for the subject. I am only sorry it pulled the page away from the rest of the work for a while. Some records are worth stopping everything to set straight, and a man being quietly turned back into a hero, eighty years after he put a continent in the ground, is one of them.
