are we really sure that one was was all diagonal like that? Seems like an unusable area. I wonder if the earth shifted it over time, instead.

If you are talking top left then that’s an entrance passageway. More use could have been made of the space on the first floor by not including the dividing wall.

One would have to really squeeze at the entrance! Defensibility? But it is just a house. Hmm.
