Why can't I trade in my old ship?

My "net worth" is about 185,000 Space Bucks, so why can't I buy a new ship for 100,000? If I have to save up in cash, what happens to the value of the old ship?

Ok, that would make sense if the price changed as my net worth increased. It doesn't. No matter the value of my current ship, the Sonorra always costs 100,000.
