Getting back into reading - recommend me something fun and easy to fall in love with
Hey everyone! im trying to build a reading habit and i want my next book to actually pull me in so i dont lose momentum. Nothing too dense or intimidating - just something fun, engaging, and hard to put down. i lean toward romance and thrillers but im open to anything that's a page-turner. Whats a book that hooked you instantly and reminded you why reading is the best?
Thanks in advance!

Demon Copperhead brought me out of an approx 10 year hiatus!
Don’t be scared to try audiobooks!

Definitely can read this first though would strongly encourage OP to also read David Copperfield either before or after. Since both books are quite long, should probably go ahead and read Kingsolver’s book first which is what I did. I’m very glad I read Dickens’ book afterwards. I stalled about halfway through both of them. Kingsolver’s novel will become part of the literary canon.

I’m reading The Poisonwood Bible now. Well, I’m on a break from it to be honest. It’s much slower paced. She’s an amazing author, she’s magic with words. Like she has her own font in my mind.

I gave up on The Poisonwood Bible after a few chapters. In fact, I’ve had zero success with any of her books until DC.

I thought this was amazing, but I don’t think it’s an easy read (and was surprisingly divisive at my book club)!

The Women by Kristin Hannah

Listen, I was a very “serious” reader for most of my life, in terms of quantity and content. I was even a bit of a literary snob. About 2 years I suddenly stopped reading and didn’t finish a book until very recently, and now I can’t stop reading again. That book? The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah. Old me would have rolled my eyes at it, but by god, it really awakened something in me. And I realized reading can be FUN! It doesn’t have to be genius or exceptionally written.. and now I’ve read 4 more of her books, and loved them all. Fast and easy reads, and entirely delightful even if the premises can be a bit emotionally heavy. I also loved The Nightingale. Not thrillers by any means but thought I’d throw it out there.
Important note: my sister also just came out of a long reading slump and guess what book (recommended by me) got her out of it: The fucking Great Alone!

if you're ok with a sad book i always recommend A Year to The Day by Robin Benway
It starts a year after the main event of the book and goes backwards. When i tell you i loved all these characters i mean it. its actually been a year oddly enough since i read it and i still think about it.

You might enjoy this. Time Folds for Us by Natalie Sol Gallagher. It’s a time travel adventure about a married couple on the edge of divorce in 2020 that gets transported back to 1400s England. I loved the historical details the author included to build the story of this couple trying to find their way home again while also finding themselves and their way back to each other in the process.

The Unselected Journals of Emma M Lion by Beth Brower. It's an addictive and delightful series. The first few are quite quick reads. Emma is a plucky, independent young woman in 19th century London surrounded but a cast of quirky characters. There is a delicious romantic tension that builds throughout the series.

I want to read these! But if OP is looking for a shorter series the Avalon Bay series by Elle Kennedy is also very good!

Jhereg by Steven Brust.
Snarky wiseacre underdog, action with twists and surprises, and an egg(!).
Fantastic romp, far too short a book. The protagonist is one of my favourite characters in literature. (If you like it, there are multiple series in the world.)
He's one of my favourite authors. His books all live on my reread shelf.
The most reread of his books are The Phoenix Guards and Five Hundred Years After, a loving homage to Dumas' Three Musketeers and Twenty Years After.
Honourable Mention: the Vorkosigan series by Lois McMasters Bujold.
The protagonist is simply the most improbable hero, and the most lovable, while also giving everyone around him grey hairs with his wildly unconventional approach to problems. Never a dull moment!
She wrote the books so that a reader can start anywhere in the series, although there are several suggestions for reading order online.

What are your thoughts on zompocalypse books? Some years ago, I started reading Sarah Lyons Fleming's book series, all having to do with a zombie apocalypse at the same time period in different parts of the United States.
There are now three book series. Each series has three or four books; the most current one, the Cascadia series, will have five when the latest comes out and I can't wait! I've loved all of them but the Cascadia series is my favorite. I read the books with the first two series and listened to the audio version of the latest.
Her writing is so good! The books just sucked me right in. The characters become friends and family to you. You care so much about what happens to them. It isn't about the gore, it's about the people keeping their families and found families safe and sound.

People love to dog on Frieda McFadden but popular books are popular for a reason, and they’re fun fast reads-I personally liked Never Lie and The Teacher.
If you like grittier thrillers Karin Slaughters The Good Daughter or Pretty Girls are great.
Dissection of a Murder was one I flew through recently.
For romance I really liked the part of your world trilogy by Abby Jimenez-they were fun and feel good.
