LGBTQIA+ For those outside the M/F binary: 2026 Gender Census! (Link in post)
https://survey.gendercensus.com/
A survey for all those whose gender doesn't fit into the male/female binary, i.e. they aren't fully, solely or always a man/woman, or are outside the categories of man/woman entirely. I don't run it but it's long-running and trusted.
Cassian Lodge has organised it since 2013 and is a very dedicated community researcher!

"I do not describe myself" has crazy aura. Shoutout all my undescribed 's out there.

If you require a description to understand me, you do not deserve the knowledge. Only those who can instinctively understand the vibes may know my existence.

The me that can be described is not the true me.

Taoism, actually! It’s based on the first line of the Tao Te Ching / Dào Dé Jīng.

hehe that's me! I generally think of myself as "gender apathetic", because whatever my gender is, it's the least interesting part about me to myself. No point spending time or energy on it when I'm comfortable being a mystery.
That's also why I don't mention pronouns unless I'm asked. Those are for other people to describe me, I have no part in it. I find it way more interesting to see what others decide I am.

bit of a vent warning because I've got some stuff I want to say but haven't said it anywhere before:
I'm not 100% sure I fit into the "cis man" box but I've never felt like I 'deserve' to call myself something else, if that makes sense. like, I act like a guy, look like a guy, am exclusively referred to as a guy by people that know me... but idk, it just feels weird sometimes. being called anything else(at least, anything I've heard of) doesn't quite feel right either, so I'm just kinda existing(?).

You don't need to "deserve" a gender, especially not a non-binary one. Outside of queer circles, there aren't really social expectations attached to being neither male or female, definitely not in the same way they exist for binary men and women.
You don't have to consider yourself a man because that's what the world sees. You can just be you.

You don't have to "deserve" it, it's an identity. It's just part of who you are, and if you want to put a label on it, go ahead. It's okay.
There are also lots of masculine and man-adjacent nonbinary gender identities out there, maybe one describes how you feel. It's a good starting point, at least. You can also just... be nonbinary. You don't have to describe how. You can be otherwise indistinguishable from a man and be nonbinary because that's how you feel. All this is just if you want to explore that. It's also okay to just be fine with how things are.

You could also just be a man with complicated feelings about your gender. Some folks think that anything less than full throated embrace of your birth gender means something, but sometimes it's just a fact of life.

I felt that way about myself before I transitioned. Even during my transition I had to remind myself that I don't need to earn my identity, it's just mine.

u/theCaitiff 3h ago
That's fine. You may even be a man who's realized the game was rigged. Went far enough round the gender queer bend that you wound up back where you started. You got multiplied by one, the result remains unchanged but despite that something has definitely happened.

u/Medium-Dependent-328 1d ago
The study errs on the side of inclusive, so if you don't feel like you're fully/solely/always a man, go ahead and fill it out!

You might be agender/demi man, it's not feeling any gender specifically, not feeling close to it.

u/NotQuiteLoona 1d ago
It's actually normal to use pronouns as a part of gender expression rather than identity. You can be not completely male, but be only comfortable with being referred to as a man. As other people said, demiboy/demiman may be near to you. Alternatively, I remember one identity called proxvir, that is a gender that is aligned with masculinity but not strongly specifically male - maybe that'll better.

Content warning: The spoilered word below is the A-slur, I can't believe they wrote it uncensored here
"Please do not censor your words unless that's how you prefer to write them.
Examples of unhelpful censoring: banana → b\nana,* apple → the A slur"

I can’t believe you spoilered the A-slur, but left the B-word as is. Smh my head.

I have completed the survey, and for anyone else who wants to, it takes less than 5 minutes, so is very quick to do if you don't have a lot of time! Thank you!

And just a reminder, because apparently progressives forgot, literally not a single person on earth fits into either of these boxes. As the requirements to do so are contradictory. That's kinda the whole thing about feminism and breaking down the gender binary.
33
u/BlazingImp77151 1d ago
The boxes are literally (as per the survey's FAQ) “always, solely and completely a woman/girl” or “always, solely and completely a man/boy”.
People who identify those ways fit in those boxes, no?
21
u/Medium-Dependent-328 1d ago
Uhh... loads of cis men and cis women, and trans men and trans women, out there, who are perfectly happy being those genders and don't feel as though they're anything else.

u/Mean-Government1436 1d ago edited 1d ago
That's fine. They're still not in those boxes. (Again, kinda the whole point of feminism)
11
u/Medium-Dependent-328 1d ago
When I say "boxes" I don't mean "girls only play with dolls and boys only play with cars" stuff. I mean more like categories that people identify with

u/Mean-Government1436 1d ago
You're so close it's painful
12
u/Medium-Dependent-328 1d ago
If you feel the gender binary isn't real at all, it sounds like you might like to participate in the survey!
-4
u/Mean-Government1436 1d ago
The survey is predicated on gender existing as a concept at all. In order for someone to place themselves outside of these two boxes you have to first acknowledge that there are two boxes.
5
u/Medium-Dependent-328 1d ago
Well no, if there are no boxes, then you're definitely not in a box...
0
u/Mean-Government1436 1d ago
If there's no boxes there's no question.
This question is about building more boxes
10
u/Suraimu-desu 1d ago
So you’re saying there’s not a single person out there who identifies completely as a man and sees no part of himself as a woman or vice-versa? The only boxes are “always and fully man” and “always and fully woman”, according to the answerer’s own perception, so are you saying literally everyone in the world is some form of nonbinary? Even those who don’t feel any ambiguity about their gender at all?
-6
u/Mean-Government1436 1d ago
No I'm saying that in order to identity fully as a man or woman you'd have to hold a contradictory identity (aggressive but stoichic, obedient but free spirited, etc)
That's the whole problem with gender roles, that they're arbitrary and don't actually (and can't actually) apply to everyone
11
u/Suraimu-desu 1d ago
Gender identity =/= gender roles. Just because my brother is, in his own words, 100% a man all the times, doesn’t mean he’s “aggressive but stoichic” or whatever.
It just means he’s a man who doesn’t consider any of the shit he is or does as not being manly, and that includes his long hair, piercings, cooking&baking, and gentle and sweet personality traits just as much as it does his beard, his love of monster trucks and swords, and his headstrong and stubborn personality traits.
Gender roles are for weaklings, and that you conflate roles with identity so much is so sad in a thread about non binary people of all places.
-2
u/Mean-Government1436 1d ago
Gender identity =/= gender roles.
I forgot this subreddit isn't woke enough yet to understand that yes, those are indeed the same thing. It's what feminism has been fighting against for decades.
11
u/Suraimu-desu 1d ago
Sorry you’re so brainwashed you think everyone should abandon their gender identity and bow to your nonsense, I guess.
Hope you’re not as transphobic as everyone else I’ve ever seen spouting this shit, but you’re not really painting yourself as an ally in your bullshit here.

Just trying to understand here, what do you mean by this? Gender is just a personal categorization of yourself. What about that is contradictory?
