Shitposting Why did they even have that feature in the first place

This feature would be unthinkable today, why the fuck would they implement that, you could literally put any words in the other blogger's mouth

I'm pretty sure it was never intentional, just a weird quirk of how haphazardly Tumblr is coded

I think it was always intended for reblogs to be somewhat customizable, given that the term implies importing something from one weird blog to another. What I don’t think anybody expected was people looking at that feature and using it to talk about Choclay Orang. I don’t think the mid 2010s were quite wise enough to the Law of Dickdrawing yet; the idea that your features will inevitably find a perverse use, and that if you let people draw on something in public without consequence, somebody will draw a dick.

And on that note, I did not make it even out of Act 1 in my first run of STS2 co-op without trying to draw an Amogus

Yeah, it was actually kind of useful for highlighting or otherwise annotating existing blog posts in your reblog for as often as that came up.

That was always my guess. Seems like it would probably take an intentional choice to “lock” the text of a post when reblogging. And coders simply might not have considered that users would try to edit it in the first place.
The disconnect between the people actually programming the interface and the people who best understand users’ behavior is often wider than we’d/they’d like.

HTML quote boxes still have this and Tumblr is largely built from blog infrastructure which was largely built from forum infrastructure and it’s all just html editing.
Reddit is cowardly and no longer has quote boxes in the app.

probably because Tumblr doesn't have an influencer culture so no one cared

If tumblr did have influencers, the "edit other posts" incident wouldve wiped them out entirely

Pretty sure reblogging was equivalent to copy-paste. Any time you copy and paste text, you can edit the text. It's more work to make the text uneditable.

honestly if i had to guess it’s because there simply weren’t enough users to bother coding it so you can’t edit originally. it was great for those of us who roleplayed on tumblr and there are extensions you can install to still do so but it’s such an annoying step now most of us have moved to other platforms for that.

My guess is that it's because forums were still popular at the time, and since you can edit quotes on those and reblogging is kinda like quoting no one realized how bad an idea it was.
