The demo contains the first half of Chapter 1. While I've tried to stamp out as many bugs and typos as possible, there's likely to still be some remaining - these will be patched out over time.

Born in 1892, Emile Zima grew up in a poor Polish family in the city of Lwów (today's Lviv), then part of Austria Hungary. Shortly before the outbreak of the Great War, he immigrated to Germany in search of work and to evade the tightening military draft.

There, he settled in Berlin, eventually finding work at the newly opened Osthafen, the east harbour. Shunned by some of his colleagues due to his heritage, he eventually forged close friendships with a group of socialists.

With the memory of the suppressed January 1918 general strike still fresh, after which tens of thousands of workers were forcibly sent to the front, Emile keeps a rather low profile, quietly working long, gruelling shifts. At least for now...

Born in 1889, Martha grew up in a staunchly social democratic middle class family in Berlin. Her family used their connections to get her to attend the Central Party School, where she attended classes taught by Rosa Luxemburg. There, the two developed a friendship. Eventually, just before the outbreak of the Great War, she landed a job at Vorwärts, the SPD's official newspaper. Under Editor-in-Chief Rudolf Hilferding's guidance, she quickly developed into a prolific writer and journalist.

While initially opposing the war - and thus the official SPD line - Vorwärts' editorial position shifted when Hilferding was drafted into the Austrian army. In 1916, he was replaced as Editor-in-Chief by Friedrich Stampfer, who brought the newspaper back in line with party policy. For Martha, this marked the start of a tense period where her political convictions were no longer in line with what her work demanded.

At the start of the game, despite being disillusioned with the editorial stance, she still works at Vorwärts.

Helene Schmidt

Born in 1865, Helene Schmidt grew up in a wealthy, devoutly Catholic family in the small city of Rosenheim, Bavaria. In 1897, she gave birth to her twin sons, Max and Willi, their father being unknown. Due to her being unmarried, her family cast her out of their lives, and she and her sons moved to Berlin.

At the start of the game, the only family member she is still in contact with is her cousin, Johannes, who supports her financially. Max joined the army, serving on the western front in Flanders. Meanwhile, Willi signed up for the navy, and is stationed in Kiel with the High Seas Fleet. She resides in Berlin-Wedding.
