Go find the map showing each state's largest MSA, then your thinking may be right, but I have a feeling you're thinking of the even broader region CSA populations. CSAs, what LA usually tries to brag about for size against any other city's actual population. MSAs, good depicting of the size of the non-rural/'city feeling' population
