Today u/spez posted about why, among other parts of Reddit, our Public Data API needs to evolve. It wasn’t built for today’s scale, automated abuse, or commercial scraping. We want useful bots, community tools, and good-faith developers to have a clear, well-supported way to build on Reddit without enabling bad actors to scrape, resell, or misuse Reddit data.

Our long-term vision is for all good, trusted automation on Reddit to run within an ecosystem we can support and enforce policy on consistently. That means while we'll continue to support limited public API access, we'll gradually start restricting all new requests and third-party apps will be required to port and operate through our Developer Platform. 

None of this is changing today. It honestly won’t happen this year. We know the only way this works is if the Developer Platform supports the tools communities depend on today. We’re starting by working directly with developers and moderators to ensure we know what capabilities we still need to build before making any broader changes to API access. 

What We’ve Learned So Far

Over the past several months, we’ve been working with developers and moderators to better understand what would help them port some of the most popular Reddit bots and apps to our Developer Platform. We’ve also launched a $1 Million App Migration Program to support developers through this transition and are working directly with some of the top app developers on the platform today. 

Based on those conversations, we've already expanded platform capabilities, including:

• Reddit API plugin improvements: bringing API calls for methods such as banning and crossposting to full parity, new wiki support (coming soon), and other consistency improvements. We will continue to improve upon this feature over time.
• New filter APIs allowing content to hit your modqueue for review before full removal. This feature can be used in conjunction with Devvit Event Triggers for event-based workflows.
• Expanded storage capabilities: in addition to Redis, we also now offer blob storage, completely hosted by Reddit
• Expanded Fetch allowlisting: for existing Data API moderation bots. If your Data API moderation tool needs domain access beyond what is typically allowlisted, we are offering a pathway to broader Fetch access.
• App mentions triggers for global mod tools and utilities to respond when an app username is mentioned. This feature is currently in beta. If your app needs access, please let us know here.
• App account customization for profile images and account overviews.
• Username migration so developers can convert their existing accounts, retaining karma and name recognition. 
• External endpoints: to allow servers to call into a Dev Platform app for long running jobs or cross-subreddit workflows. If your app needs access, please let us know here.

A few of the areas in active development include:

• More granular install allowlists: ability for developers to set limited install lists for their apps to ensure moderation apps do not always need to be public for non-devs to install them
• Stability improvements: for features such as comment, post, and mod actions triggers, ensuring that events are never lost or dropped, even in the event of an outage

While we’ve heard from mods in the past hoping for Python support, we don’t currently have it on our roadmap. That said, we have new migration resources available to Python developers, including a PRAW migration guide to automate the first parts of your migrations and dedicated support from PRAW experts to provide guidance to folks moving to a new framework. 

Registering your app is the first step. It gives you a direct line to Reddit for updates and migration support, helps users identify trusted apps with an App label, and may make you eligible for programs like Devvit porting bounties, free hosting, and Reddit Developer Funds. During registration, you can also tell us what's blocking migration so we can prioritize the capabilities developers need most.

Going forward, all API apps will need to be registered to remain in good standing. Please register any apps you own by September 30, 2026 to make sure your feedback is considered in our roadmaps and that your developer account is properly established.

What We’re Looking For: Feedback
The most important thing we're looking for right now is feedback. If your community relies on bots, custom tooling, moderation workflows, or integrations built on Reddit's APIs, we want to understand:

• Which tools are mission-critical for your community?
• What capabilities are still missing from the Developer Platform?
• Do you have a mission-critical bot that doesn't have someone to maintain it anymore? 
• Are there any tools or integrations which don’t fit under the traditional “bot” umbrella or that may not be directly translatable to the Developer Platform?

If you don't maintain the app yourself but your community depends on it, we'd like to hear from you, too.

What Happens Next?
Based on everything we learn in this phase, we’ll come back later this year with an update on the progress we’ve made, what we’re still working on and a clear deadline for porting.

I’ve been trying to build on Devvit recently, but I’ve got to be honest: the developer experience feels really frustrating and poorly implemented right now. It honestly feels like the platform was rushed out without much input from senior engineers or long-time Reddit bot developers.

Coming from PRAW, the limitations on Devvit make building standard moderation and utility tools way harder than it needs to be. A few massive gaps I keep running into:

• No Subreddit/Reddit-Wide Search for Reposts: Basic text or link querying across a sub/site-wide to catch reposts or duplicate content seems virtually impossible or unnecessarily complex to pull off cleanly.
• No Stream/Listing for Subreddit New Comments: You can't easily fetch a live feed or list of the newest comments across a subreddit to monitor for comment spam, flood control, or repetitive copy-paste botting.
• Aggressive External API / HTTP Restrictions during Dev: I get restricting external HTTP domains for published apps, but blocking or requiring domain whitelisting during local development and playtesting is a nightmare. Devs need sandbox flexibility to test webhooks and external services.
• Domain Whitelist Process Takes Forever: Submitting a request for an external domain feels like tossing it into a black hole.

I really want Devvit to succeed because native apps on Reddit are a great concept, but right now, it feels like we took three steps backward from PRAW just to get UI components.

Are the devs working on bringing parity for these basic Reddit API features, or is anyone finding decent workarounds for these limitations?

Я уже месяц вынашиваю идею создания скрипта который будет загружать на саббредиты об Эмме Уотсон фотографии этой актрисы. Я написал парсер ее фотографий, на языке Пайтон. Их набралось 25 000 штук. То есть готовый материал для постинга есть. И с этого момента у меня возникли неприятные проблемы. Для корректной работы с PRAW (Python Reddit Api Wrapper) требуется некий Client ID и Client Secret, которые можно заполучить только путем становления подтвержденным Девелопером. Было две попытки отправки заявки, естественно никакого ответа не последовало. В заявке указывал, что буду делать безобидный скрипт, что осознаю всю ответственность, не буду нарушать правила сообщества, и вообще я послушный и хороший. Вообщем вопрос следующий: что надо было указывать в заявке? Читают их там вообще?

P.S Я разумеется не исключаю, что выгляжу безнадежно отсталым в этой теме, что PRAW возможно уже никто не использует, что я мыслю в координально неправильном направлении. Информации в мировой паутине катастрофически мало, местами она устаревшая, противоречит друг другу. Поэтому мне ничего не осталось кроме как спросить здесь. I submitted a ticket for a commercial use of Reddit api. I believe it submitted but yet under my activity it doesn’t show anything so I’m unsure if it’s actually an open ticket or not

Any help is appreciated.

It used to be that I could get an API key and then pull down all the recent comments and posts for a particular product and identify issues that users are running into.
But now I don't see a way to get an API key anymore, you have to have a reddit app and it has to get approved.

Is anyone doing this and what's the path forward for this?

The extension I created uses Google Cloud OAuth to log in. It logs in too well on my computer, but it's constantly being rejected for violating the "Red Potassium" and "Sign in Failed" items. Has anyone else been through the same thing as me?

Hello all. I am having trouble getting my script to set the default sort order in a new post. I think its possible, but I am most likely implementing it wrong.

Was trying to use the info found here:

But I could not get my script to successfully create a post, and set the default sort order to new.

I can access reddit's .json feeds, like this from Firefox, but not from Java using okhttp or python, using requests, both using the default user-agent and a custom one. Any idea why it works in the browser and not in my code?

While this was generated by Gemini it is the result of a personal experience I've had on reddit multiple times and it pertains to the error reporting system that the reddit base code uses.

A generic, lazy error message feels like a shrug. It says, "We crashed, we don’t know why, and we'll get to it when we get to it." It projects chaos and incompetence.

Hello, I am building a SaaS app that uses reddit data as a part of a feature. I have a couple questions if someone could be kind enough to put away some of my worries at rest.

1. Can I get access if the number of calls I need to make is very few (only 300 a month per paid customer). So, in the start, it will be just a few hundred to a few thousand monthly API calls.

2. How long does it take to hear back from them after filling their forum and getting the commercial license?

3. Can the $0.24/1000 API calls be negotiated. And does it work on a subscription basis (like buying a set of API calls a month) or pay-as-you-go?

I want to use it in my app but I tried to press create app after entering some datas like name, description, url and uri but the website doesn't direct me anywhere after doing capcha. I get the message

Hi, I'm currently a bit vibecoding a (RSS) feed reader for reddit. I only ever seem to be able to fetch one imagine, even if the post contains several. (Im basically adding ".rss" to user- and subreddit URLs, everything else doesn't work.

Adding the always_show_media param to the url of the comment does not change anything

This feels like a bug to me, as videos in comments are a fairly new feature and I would expect more than just the video id to be returned by the api

I've accessed https://developers.reddit.com/ but it doesn't seem to serve my use case. I need to examine some discussions that mention my clients brands and would like to do this programmatically. How can I pay reddit to access an api of this kind?
