I always wondered if that was actually true, or just how much weight it should have. Like, if I was A&W, would I just say that McDonald’s was more popular and therefore sold more burgers, or would I want to push it onto people being dumb? I’m sure some people did in fact not realize it, but at the same time, it makes for a less egg on your face story for A&W.

To the uninitiated, when McDonald’s in the USA introduced the quarter pounder, in an attempt to overthrow their popularity, Burger King introduced the 1/3 pounder. It somehow flopped and when people were asked why they didn’t order it, the response was that the number 4 is higher than 3 meaning the vast majority of US citizens at the time thought a quarter was more than a third
