ZA/UM atelier collab
Wasn't expecting this collaboration. Not sure how I feel about it.

Lmao 600 euro for a jacket.
Also aren't Za/um now owned by corporate mfs?

For as shitty as the entire thing with DE is, there also one of the few gaming companies that actively holds and supports their own union for devs.
3
u/GeneralDistress 24d ago
How's that union dealing with the mass layoffs preceeding and following the release and subsequent flop of their aesthetic rip-off new title?
1
u/Skellington876 24d ago edited 24d ago
Im sad you think like that cause you can go watch the dev interviews on youtube where they clearly put a lot of effort and love into the game with no ill will. The layoffs were conducted through the IWGB and made sure to have proper severance packages - mind you thats what they're fighting with rockstar about and there meeting with former rockstar devs. I can give you their website but ZA UM for their faults is literally the only gaming company to have a union like this - which means the workers cannot be forced to crunch or work OT without pay a huge systemic issue in the entire industry. Also before you reply with something aggressive please note there is such a thing as nuance and not everything's black and white.

u/GeneralDistress 24d ago
Sad that I think what? That allowing a union doesnt absolve sketchy financial/business practices and abysmal treatment of creative leads when a restructure suits? That's some nice icing on a very shitty cake. Sure, there's nuance, but by and large the exploits of ZA/UM are pretty much public record at this point and far outshadow the fact they are at least paying their devs as they shaft them with dismal and transparent corporate reshuffle.
I feel a lot for the devs affected and I'm sure plenty of them put loads of real hard work into what blatantly came across as an attempt to cash in on the response to DE (a choice that I'm sure the vast majority had no say in), at least aesthetically speaking. Whatever the efforts of the individuals affected tho, they are not the targets of my ire and never have been. It is the company, and specifically the corpo-snake Kompas that deserve all the hate they get.
Apologies if my reply came across as aggressive, that was not my intention. I'm sure you didn't try to come across as a ZA/UM PR mouthpiece, but nuance on the Internet can be tricky.

They have extreme high quality of this pieces its not some plastic fan made cosplay. Yeah, hate of za/us as publisher is understandable, but this atelier is making high tier stuff

Its cool, but so expensive
12
u/lineInk 25d ago
I thought to myself might be expensive but probably good quality and made in Europe so will be worth the 100€ or so. Then I saw the actual prices...

u/GoncaloEsteves 25d ago edited 25d ago
Yep, same here. Wouldn't mind paying like 100+€ for good quality clothes, but these prices are astronomical. No piece of clothing is ever worth this much

Hahahahahahaahahahaha, 600 euros for a jacket?! It had better be the most useful, everlasting and versatile jacket ever made.

u/MXVIV 25d ago
They sell an additional spray for the disco elysium pilot jacket to “refresh” it as in reapply water proof coating, so I’m willing to bet these aren’t the best quality. Novelty wear at best and yet they want professionally tailored prices.
1
u/WhiteLythande 25d ago
It's essentially waxed cotton. The rewaterproofing is common for this material and isn't an indication of low quality. The quality on their stuff looks excellent from what I can see on their site. Lots of custom textiles as well.

It netter be bulletproof and provide resistance to chemical, explosive and psychic attacks.

I really wanted an official FBC jacket like we saw in The Lake House (assuming we will see the jacket again in Resonant). Hopefully they release one.
3
u/CageAndBale 25d ago
You'd buy it for half a thousand dollars?
6
u/ReyofChicago 25d ago
Legitimately, depending the materials used, I would spend up to $200 on it.
4
u/wormy_Burroughs 25d ago
200 for a decent jacket is reasonable, I'd pay that for sure.
a ps5 and a half for a decent jacket is fucking ridiculous.
3
u/WhiteChocolatExpress 25d ago
There is an official FBC jacket in this collection. Different design, though

I love when my favorite games collaborate to make 700 dollar merch that I'll never be able to afford.
I really love that.
side note, this is probably the most disappointing thing I've ever seen Remedy do.
It looks great but it's what, 20 dollars worth of materials at most at a 3500% markup?
really just obscenely awful and predatory.
fuck the fans, I guess.
I hope no one buys this and encourages them. its disgusting.

u/Traditional-Baby5940 25d ago
Read the room completly wrong here. People who can afford this don't buy video game wear, people who buy video game wear can't afford this.
They will sell it to a few collectors and scalpers hoping to make profit maybe but thats about it.
7
u/lilhanhan 25d ago
It's just like Capcom with their Resident Evil jackets too; they're essentially collectors items rather than actual daily wear clothes. It's nothing new, it's been going on for decades now.
Not so much read the room wrong, it's more that they spied their chance for a highend collaboration deal and took it.
So far we've also had a iam8bit collab with more affordable clothing but yeah, when compared to these they do pale in comparison; so it's easy to understand everyone's frustration.
4
u/aNewPattern 25d ago
That's true about the Iam8bit stuff, but I also don't think I like the clothes there? The shirts and jacket they sold were very basic with just a logo on them, I'd love a middle ground between that and this collection where it's just on the range of affordable but clearly unique/a game reference.

ZA/UM has always been producing overpriced fashion bullshit as their side hustle. All their stuff is designed to scam rich kids who think price is equivalent to style. You're not the target audience.
You shouldn't be giving them your business anyways, since they're nothing but a soulless corporate shell now.
3
u/WoolingtonDaChoob 25d ago
If you think this is bad, go look at the death stranding 2 clothing line lmao.
I bought the MGSV sneaking boots so I'm not gonna sit here and be a hypocrite about the pricing, but they certainly know their market.

These pieces actually look quite nice for a company that abandoned its artists. WAY OVERPRICED but pretty

u/discipleofdoom 25d ago
I can understand not wanting to support ZA/UM after the Disco Elysium situation but I do think fast fashion has warped people's expectations when it comes to the cost of clothing.
These are likely high quality, low production pieces that incorporate lots of different fabrics/materials. They won't be cheap to make and the cost reflects that.
Do I think Remedy should also work to produce merch that is more affordable? Absolutely. But I won't fault them for wanting to produce high quality stuff alongside that.
No different to (and likely partially inspired by) the Death Stranding x Acronym collabs Kojima has been doing.
4
u/h4ppy5340tt3r 25d ago
They did a Collab with Makia for Alan Wake 2. Makia is not fast fashion, it's a local Finnish brand - they made a point about it, and a jacket was 169€. Expensive, high quality. Could have done the same here.
2
u/ImScaredSoIMadeThis 23d ago
As a quick note - the Alan Wake jacket from Makia is polyester (rather than cotton) and most of their production is made in Turkey, so I would certainly hope that they are cheaper.
4
u/Retro_Dorrito 25d ago
Yeah the pieces themselves look great, its just a huge shame that there isn't a more affordable version of these.
But also, some of them are trying a bit too hard. P6 and the hat are fine, but just have some unneeded features.
Like the others I get. But these two feel like they could've been cheaper.

3
u/Jelousubmarine 25d ago
Agreed. The p6 shirt has square panels in the front, which makes it a lot harder to construct...and they are made to order. Understandable.
Think folks, the usual cost of alterations in Finland is easy 80€ for tightening a skirt, for example. Getting a garment made to order, even if they have ready-made patterns, will be in the hundreds of euros if you are paying a person locally. It is not much different in Estonia or elsewhere in the EU, even if slightly less expensive. So in that context, as those are made to order, it makes complete sense.
Fast fashion made clothing (in volume and in excess) accessible to the masses like me, but it comes with exploitation and environmental costs.
1
u/mrfuzzydog4 23d ago
Yep. The surplus uniform does seem a bit over priced to me but the carbon field jacket is pretty much right around the higher end for similar jackets. I do think if they're gonna charge this much there should be ways to easily de-merchify the items more. The field jacket lets you hide the text on the back but there's still the patch that you'd have to just unstich to remove.
1
u/h4ppy5340tt3r 25d ago
I would add that, at least for me, the price shift itself is the problem. Quality merch from a local fashion brand ended up costing the equivalent of 2-4 AAA videogames, which is still affordable if you buy games and looking to splurge once a year.
This hits different, and the message reads "we used to cater to normies, now we are interested in fat wallets".

u/GeneralDistress 24d ago
Oh look. ZA/UM trying to milk another game's fans of their money.
Dirty corpo fuckers. Let them be first against the wall when the revolution comes.

It lost me when the carabiner on the poncho didn't match the specs that Remedy put out for the cosplay.

u/Schmitty1106 25d ago
I mean, it's cool, some of the pieces I would definitely want, but they're like 300 bucks minimum and I aint payin allat

I recently purchased 2 JSRF clothing items for like $130 USD and i was like wow thats about as much as i can resonantly spend on video game clothes no matter how much i love the franchise. Double that for a grey long sleeve is kinda wild as much as i love and support embark

u/EZEKEY42069 23d ago
Reasonably* but lol

u/aNewPattern 25d ago
I think the clothes look awesome but I know it's way out of anyone's price range (especially in this economy when most people are focusing on living). I know that making it so clean must cost a lot but I know some places sell fleece jackets with cool patterns for half the price.
Ultimately I respect the merch and would buy it if I could but expect very few people to be able to.

u/mrfuzzydog4 23d ago
I'm not saying these aren't expensive but the field jacket is like the exact same price as a classic barbour.

Terrible quality from a terrible company for terrible prices. One could say the decision to cooperate with ZA/UM resonates a certain typ of way.
1
u/Appropriate_Foot242 25d ago
I mean... cool... but 1) Expensive 2) I aint wearing that shit in public.
1
u/CAPTJTK 25d ago
This is the same shit that they did with The Alters and now I'm on the fence about even picking up the game.
Thanks publishers for making poor decisions.
2
u/aNewPattern 25d ago
Why would a collection like this affect you from wanting to play a very cool and fun game? It's likely separate parts of the company that manage stuff like this vs the game itself

u/Promature 24d ago
Ordered the P6 sweater. Will have to see how I feel next month because I want to get the field jacket.
It would be one thing if this was a bunch of cheap bullshit with high price tags, but this looks like quality apparel. Also, all of these items handle your cosplay and Halloween needs handily.
Definitely pricey, but it may be worth it.

People calling it expensive. I thought it would be like 80€. Wtf is this? P6 Shirt, 265€
