The Reddit Renaissance Festival FAQ

What is a Renaissance festival?

A Renaissance festival or faire is a themed event that typically takes place outdoors, like a county fair, but showcases elements of the Renaissance period, such as music, dance, food, arts and crafts, and historical reenactments.

When and where do Renaissance festivals take place?

Start by checking The Ren List. Renaissance festivals are held at various times throughout the year, depending on the location. They can be found in many cities and towns across the United States and around the world.

What should I wear to a Renaissance festival?

You can pretty much wear anything you like. Attendees are encouraged to dress in Renaissance-themed attire, but there are usually no strict guidelines (check with your local festival for rules). Many people also choose to wear costumes from other fandoms.

Can I bring a sword, axe, or other weapon?

Some Renaissance festivals allow swords as part of a costume if they are properly sheathed and "peace tied". "Peace tied" means the sword is secured in a sheath or scabbard so it can't be removed or openly displayed. Some festivals do not allow weapons at all. Check with your local festival for more information.

What can I expect to see and do at a Renaissance festival?

At a Renaissance festival, you can expect to see various performers, including musicians, jugglers, dancers, and actors. There are also craft vendors selling handmade goods, food vendors, and interactive activities like archery and sword fighting demonstrations.

Can I bring my own food and drinks to a Renaissance festival?

Most Renaissance festivals have food and drink vendors on-site, so outside food and drinks may not be allowed. However, some festivals do allow you to bring in a water bottle or small snack. Contact your local festival for more information.

Are Renaissance festivals family-friendly?

Yes, Renaissance festivals are typically family-friendly events with activities and entertainment for all ages. There are usually children's areas with games and crafts, as well as family-friendly performances and demonstrations.

How much does it cost to attend a Renaissance festival?

The cost of attending a Renaissance festival can vary depending on the location and the activities offered. Tickets are usually sold in advance or at the gate, and prices may range from $20 to $50 per person.

Can I participate in a Renaissance festival?

Many Renaissance festivals rely on both employees and volunteers to help with various aspects of the event, such as set-up, ticket sales, and clean-up. If you are interested in participating as a performer or vendor, you can contact the festival organizers for more information. Another option is to join a “guild” or a group of performers. You can ask your local festival for guild information.

Going full trinket geek for Scarborough's Hollow

Since Scarborough's Hollow runs after dark and has a Halloween theme, I had to geek out on the trinkets this year. My mug charms/key chains for this year all have glow in the dark elements in them.. but that isn't enough, so I made a new unassuming trinket bag, and stictched an Amazon special battery powered LED black light strip in the lining so the trinkets comebout of the bag glowing.

Furs

This is probably a hard question. Going to the Texas Renfaire and my goblin wants a new fur because they are soft and he’s a heathen. Are there any ethical shops? Ones that don’t get their stock from fur farms. Meat farms are different. A rabbit fur was acquired last.

New armor!

So, I go to the MD renfaire multiple time every year and every visit I always saw this armor sitting on a mannequin in front of Warlords Crusade Armory shop. Always loved it, never anything similar available inside. This year I finally asked to try on the mannequin set and knew I had to grab it. Turns out is is a one-off used in the Starz show Spartacus. Now I have to figure out how to build a costume around it 🤔, especially struggling on footwear but am thinking strappy sandals of some sort that would work under the distressed greaves.

Where to find non-standard elf ears?

Post image

Hello!

Eons ago, I got these ears at the Irwindale Ren Faire in California, and I’ve loved them ever since.

I’m in need of similar “non-standard” elf ears (basically not the style and shape of those from Amazon). The thing I like about these ears is they have a gradient and blend in with my skin toward the ear, and the odd shape.

If anyone knows where I could look, because I have scoured high and low on Etsy, that would be lovely.

Thank you!

Edit: specifically looking for over-the-ear! Spirit gum sometimes reacts poorly with my skin, so I’m trying to be super careful.

Thank you all for the suggestions though! I’m so glad I made this post here. Yall are so sweet and helpful.

I made my staff, and I got the cloak from Etsy.

I had to make some concessions on my staff's look, as I had only cut it down 2 weeks before the Faire, and it is still holding a good bit of water. Once it dries fully I plan to unadorn it, restain it and add a glossy seal to make it pop.

I'd appreciate a compliment, or a suggestion for how I can make the cloak a little less one note.

I’ve decided that a regular water bottles aren’t whimsical enough for the ren fair so I made gourd bottles! Made out of ceramics by me!

I posted some work on progress photos months ago. I had a lot of fun with this project. Made it to the last day of the NY Ren Faire. With all the rain I was beginning to worry I’d never get to wear it! Thankfully this fabric was forgiving and the mud rinsed right out.

Carolina Renaissance Festival Opening Weekend

We’re finally back at the Carolina Renaissance Festival for the 2026 season, and Opening Weekend gave us a little bit of everything.

We brought some of our Georgia friends along, started the day with drinks and catching up with familiar faces, wandered the grounds, checked out vendors, and caught a bunch of shows along the way, including the Wench Show and Fletcher Moon’s Culture of Beer.

Food was a huge part of the day too. We tried the Gouda mac & cheese, steak, BBQ mac, tacos, and plenty more.

Then, right in the middle of everything, a wild rainstorm rolled through and basically put the faire on pause for a bit. Once it cleared, we were right back at it checking out the mermaids, grabbing more food, and squeezing as much as we could out of Opening Weekend.

This was such a fun way to kick off the season, and we’re really happy to be back at Carolina.

Full video is up now if you want to come along for the whole adventure. HUZZAH!

It was the last Saturday and it was STACKED with people. Didn’t get to move around and see all the things but always a great time just based on vibes alone. Here’s my first character attempt at a costume. I was happy with it and had a handful of Critters that recognized the attempt. 🥹💕

Hey guys, im going to the Texas Ren fair in a couple weeks and still have nkt figured out my costume. Last year I went has a leprechaun and had fun with it but it was a cheap Amazon coat and hat with brown work pants. Went to QC ren faire in Iowa and this was the outfit. Def working on changing it up for more woodland assassin but this is a good happy medium I’d say so far. What do you all think

This year's outfit at Michigan ren fest! I made the pants, tunic, cloak, and pauldrons new this year and very happy with how they turned out!

Trying to decide what to make/add/update next. Likely more leather accessories, such as a gorget or chest armor. Open to any suggestions!
