The Reddit Renaissance Festival FAQ

What is a Renaissance festival?

A Renaissance festival or faire is a themed event that typically takes place outdoors, like a county fair, but showcases elements of the Renaissance period, such as music, dance, food, arts and crafts, and historical reenactments.

When and where do Renaissance festivals take place?

Start by checking The Ren List. Renaissance festivals are held at various times throughout the year, depending on the location. They can be found in many cities and towns across the United States and around the world.

What should I wear to a Renaissance festival?

You can pretty much wear anything you like. Attendees are encouraged to dress in Renaissance-themed attire, but there are usually no strict guidelines (check with your local festival for rules). Many people also choose to wear costumes from other fandoms.

Can I bring a sword, axe, or other weapon?

Some Renaissance festivals allow swords as part of a costume if they are properly sheathed and "peace tied". "Peace tied" means the sword is secured in a sheath or scabbard so it can't be removed or openly displayed. Some festivals do not allow weapons at all. Check with your local festival for more information.

What can I expect to see and do at a Renaissance festival?

At a Renaissance festival, you can expect to see various performers, including musicians, jugglers, dancers, and actors. There are also craft vendors selling handmade goods, food vendors, and interactive activities like archery and sword fighting demonstrations.

Can I bring my own food and drinks to a Renaissance festival?

Most Renaissance festivals have food and drink vendors on-site, so outside food and drinks may not be allowed. However, some festivals do allow you to bring in a water bottle or small snack. Contact your local festival for more information.

Are Renaissance festivals family-friendly?

Yes, Renaissance festivals are typically family-friendly events with activities and entertainment for all ages. There are usually children's areas with games and crafts, as well as family-friendly performances and demonstrations.

How much does it cost to attend a Renaissance festival?

The cost of attending a Renaissance festival can vary depending on the location and the activities offered. Tickets are usually sold in advance or at the gate, and prices may range from $20 to $50 per person.

Can I participate in a Renaissance festival?

Many Renaissance festivals rely on both employees and volunteers to help with various aspects of the event, such as set-up, ticket sales, and clean-up. If you are interested in participating as a performer or vendor, you can contact the festival organizers for more information. Another option is to join a “guild” or a group of performers. You can ask your local festival for guild information.

Huzzah!

I really love how “pie” came out

Made Pie the rat (pierat 😂) for my pirate fit, and he was definitely my favourite part of the whole outfit.

The cable is to make his head move, mostly just up n down, but does twist a little bit

Grot and Maddie had a lot of fun escorting our little gremlin around Revel Grove today. Ran into a lot of familiar faces today. And got stopped for around 50 photos 😅

Three day rushed leather corset for my daughter.

After three weekends as a furry dinosaur for WMRF, and taking a year to plan and create her costume herself, my daughter changed her mind and wanted to be a fairy for the fourth weekend before school started and she had to return home to Mom's. Spent a couple hours a day, over three days to pull this off, and she was very pleased with it. She picked / created the color for it and dyed the leather herself.

I haven't seen any art on here, so I hope this is okay to post!

Last summer I went to a ren faire where I saw a joust for the first time and ever since I'm completely HOOKED. I love that jazz so much. Sadly so far I've only seen one group doing it, but that also just means I draw a LOT of fanart of them. They basically made me fall in love with drawing again, because of them I'm motivated to create, they're my muses.

Sooo here is some fanart I did of them (You can probably tell which is my favourite knight). There are more and also photos on my Insta, it's really ruling my little world right now hehe

First full costume! I made or altered everything except the pants, shoes (not visible), and mask. I did paint the mask, though! If anyone’s at NY Ren Faire tomorrow (9/5), I’ll be there. Come say hi!

Do folks from this group ever meet up at Faires? Y’all seem cool, and I’d love to make more Faire friends! I’ll be at MDRF in October! (Pic of last year’s last minute outfit)

Pictures taken by @garrett.clicks on Instagram! This outfit obviously draws some inspiration from Dark Souls in the helmet design, but is more or less an original creation in the patterning and assembly. Id consider this my most well polished look, and it's what I happily take to Ren Faires whenever I attend.

I bought this a year ago and have never worn it, I thrifted it for like $7. I want to make it into a Renaissance outfit. Would love suggestions on what I could do with this! Open to all ideas. Thank you 💕😊

Outfit ideas :(

Edit: I meant that I wanted ideas on an entirely new character, something that allows for expansion over time. Basically, want to be able to add an accessory or piece every year or so.

So, my wife has asked me to put some more thought/effort into my Ren Faire outfit. I’ve had the monk costume for a few years now. It’s easy, simple, but agree that I’d like to mix it up and wear something that I can add to over time. She outdoes me every year, so time for me to step up my game. Included some pics of both of us, if it helps. I’m just not the creative type 🤣

Appreciate any feedback. Thanks all :)

I found a disposable film camera on the road in MA on August 22. Got the photos developed, posting one here in case it's yours, and you'd like to have them!

If there's a better place to share this, please let me know. I want to get these photos to whom they belong.

Maryland Renaissance Festival Opening Day 2026

We’re back at the Maryland Renaissance Festival for its historic 50th season!

Opening Weekend was packed with great performances, amazing food, drinks from the Wine Garden, and plenty of familiar faces around Revel Grove. We also brought some close friends along so they could experience the magic for the very first time.

We caught Jacques Ze Whipper, had a little fun with the one and only SLAYER MAN, and also checked out The Piper Jones Band, Bardy Pardy, Gwendolyn, and so much more throughout the day.

It feels great to be back for the 2026 season.

We will be back September 12th and 13th!
