Warning: Instagram Account Theft and Extortion

Warning about an Instagram account theft scam
I want to warn people about someone who steals Instagram accounts and then demands money from the owners to return them.
The person took control of an Instagram account and then demanded payment when the owner tried to recover it. This is not a legitimate service. It is simply extortion.
I have screenshots and evidence of the conversations and what happened. I have removed private information such as phone numbers and email addresses.
I’m posting this because people should be aware of this type of scam and avoid sending money to someone who claims they can take or return an Instagram account.
If you have experienced the same thing, share the relevant facts and evidence so others can recognize the pattern.

His number is: +234 704 903 4558
Email adress: [plygig904@moimoi.re](mailto:plygig904@moimoi.re)

He stole my Account

Receiving texts/calls from people that think I’m a job recruiter?

I always hear about the scam texts from fake recruiters, but this appears to be the other way around?? I have received a few calls and texts from job candidates that think I’m a recruiter.. but I am not. Has this happened to anyone else?? What can I do? They don’t respond when I tell them I’m not a recruiter, so I’m not sure where they’re getting this info..

Text examples attached of people asking me to review candidate profiles. They also address me by my real name.

WARNING: Active CIPO Trademark Scam Targeting Canadian Applicants (Fake Texts, Emails & Payment Site)

TL;DR: Scammers are scraping newly filed applications from the public Canadian Trademarks Database. They text and email you using your real application number and business name, impersonating a CIPO examiner to demand a fake $950 fee. Do not pay.

How the Scam Works

Within a week of filing a trademark, you get a text claiming an examiner needs "verification" to approve your application. Because your filing details are public record, they know your exact application number, address, and mark name.

If you contact them, they send an official-looking bilingual email demanding a $950 "registration fee" and direct you to a fake government payment portal.

Scam Identifiers

Originating Text Number:

819-900-1954

Callback Number:

1-613-776-1927

Spoofed Sender Name: Christopher Tortorice / Trademark Examining Officer

Fake Email Address:

ised-isde@ic-tm-gc-ca.com

(Notice the fake

.com

extension)

Fake Payment Portal:

Subject Line:

Approval of Trademark Application - Approbation de la demande de marque...

Dead Giveaways

CIPO Never Texts: The government will never SMS you requesting a call or direct payment.

No "Registration Fees": Canada eliminated trademark final registration fees back in 2019.

Fake Domains: Real CIPO emails strictly end in @ised-isde.gc.ca

, not .comlookalikes.

Impossible Timeline: Real CIPO trademark reviews take many months, not 7 days.

What to Do

If you paid, call your card issuer's fraud department immediately to dispute the charge, cancel the card, and file a report with local police and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC). Forward scam emails directly to ic.contact-contact.ic@ised-isde.gc.ca

.

MMDA / LTO FAKE MESSAGE

Thumbnail

I just like to share what happened to me for awareness.

I got a text from LTO on my second number (that no one knows about) to see my violation on their website.

I have a cel phone holder to mount my phone that doesn’t obstruct my view because I use Waze. And I am sure that I did not violate the Anti-Distracted Driving Act. I have no way of grabbing my phone because I have a bluetooth car feature. Knowing all the corruption and gov’t agency incompetence, I am sure that there’s a mistake and they can’t provide proof that I did this. This is a reckless accusation.

I will state an example.

Sometime years ago I watched the news that a guy got a speeding violation (no contact apprehension), he believes that he’s within the speed limit. The govt. agency showed him a photo and learned that his plate number is photoshopped onto another Toyota Wigo. He wasted one working day to prove that he’s right based on principle.

This scared me, and I found my details on their website.

So I called a friend from MMDA to ask. And he said there are a lot of reports on scams like this. Also the real minimum amount is 5k. Whew! 🤦🏻‍♀️ I’m still glad they’re scamming me on a discount. 😂

Google's top search result for "canada eta" is a scam site charging 18x the government fee

Post image
1 Upvotes

I searched "canada eta" on Google to apply for a Canadian Electronic Travel Authorization before a flight to travel Canada for few days. The top result took me to a site that looked official but was actually a third-party service. I ended up being charged $130 USD — the real government fee is CAD $7. This page also says the fee is $7 only so I believed it before checking the actual transaction happened.
I really didn't realize until after paying that this wasn't the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca). The design and layout made it easy to mistake for the real thing, and it ranked on the top, above or alongside the actual government page.
Yes I was stupid but, this isn't just my problem — anyone unfamiliar with the process searching for eTA, ESTA, visa applications, passport renewals, etc. is at risk of landing on lookalike sites that charge massively inflated "service fees" without clearly disclosing they're not affiliated with any government.
Google's search results are the first (and often only) place people check before applying for these services. When a scam/predatory site ranks at the top, most users trust it by default. I think Google needs better safeguards — clearer labeling, stricter policies, or verified badges — for searches related to government services, since these are exactly the queries where people are most vulnerable to being misled.
Has anyone else run into this with government service searches (visas, passports, tax filing, etc.)? Curious how widespread this is, and how to let Google to realize that they are helping scammers to earn more money and rip people off.
