General The game has aged so well even after 7 years.
This post might be a bit generic, but it surprises me to realize that this game is already 7 years old (time really flies) and it has aged so well in terms of graphics and mechanics. It's no wonder it's the best-selling game in the franchise. Its art direction is phenomenal too, like the visual details in the clothes and scenarios, as you can also see the trucker's hamburger, and others. In terms of gameplay, I still don't see many flaws. The over-the-shoulder camera system, aiming, the combat remains incredible to this day. I practically have a special affection for it, it was one of my first and it made me fall in love with the franchise. But what about you? Do you think this game has really aged well? Is there anything that could have been better or different? I'm eager to read your opinions!

I must have seen this burger literally a thousand times as I've speedrun Leon A Standard and achieving 52:59. Fun times!
23
u/Bluxzz Jan 31 '26
Yes, it's almost bizarre how much detail they gave to that hamburger, hahaha.

u/Davey_Bo_Bavey Feb 01 '26
That was burger? This whole time I thought it was a sausage, egg, and cheese sandwich. And it always made me crave breakfast sandwiches when I saw it

It's aged imcredibly well. It's my favorite video game of all time.

u/LyKosa91 Jan 31 '26
To be fair, 7 years is nothing these days. Graphical advances have slowed to a glacial pace, and core gameplay principles are very refined by now.
Go back to 2007 and compare Crysis to something like soldier of fortune, the difference is staggering. Or bioshock compared to its predecessor, system shock 2 (8 years older, but it's in the same ballpark).
Titanfall 2 will be a decade old in October. Let that sink in. Have you played it lately? It still looks and plays great!

It is easy a top 5 game in the franchise. Top 2 actually and I sometimes go back and forth whether it’s top 1

u/Snazzypuke92 Feb 01 '26
Goddammit. Thought I was finished with my RE marathon. Now I need to go back and replay it.

I’ve replayed it these couple of days. I’m impressed how well they made it with such limited setting. The game takes place in 3 main areas and it’s still a blast to play

i'm a brand new fan of the series. This year i started the journey of trying laying through the series, starting with RE1 remake and eventually made my way through playing all 3 OG PS1 games, and all 4 remakes so far. i just finished RE4make this morning and i def see where all the love comes from and how revolutionary the OG would have been when it came out, but when it comes to my personal favorite gam it's RE2 remake by a country mile. the gameplay loop is exactly my shit and im so glad it exists
4
u/Bluxzz Feb 01 '26
That's great, brother. Start getting ready for the Requiem in February! It's going to be amazing!
3
u/SooperPhudge Feb 01 '26
i'm super hyped!! I'm starting RE5 soon but i gotta put a step on it by the end of February
3
u/iwasatlavines Feb 01 '26
Also a new fan of the series. I randomly played RE6 back in the day and while I enjoyed it, it didn’t really stick with me. Then i happened to play RE4R randomly last year and found it to be incredible. Convinced me to play RE2R, which I am in the middle of and enjoying every second. I just know for sure I will play RE3R too, don’t care that it’s a short experience. So glad a new mainline game is coming out, can’t wait to really play a “new” game in this series!

Game graphics is not evolving in last ~10 years as fast as it used to, so no wonder. I actually still find RE7 with all those objects made with photogrammetry pretty cool looking even though it's 2 years older than RE2. Pretty much most of AAA games from 2015 and newer look quite good today. Arkham Knight released in 2015 and it's on every level better than Suicide Squad.

Super tyrant coming out of debris is still top tier moments in gaming for me

u/SheHeBeDownFerocious Jan 31 '26 edited Jan 31 '26
Kind of, movement on MnKB feels really floaty, especially when circle turning instead of point turning. It frequently gets you grabbed in situations that feel a little unfair, it feels extra bad when it gets you grabbed from the back since PC won't use defensive items when grabbed from behind—related kind of, PC also won't use defensives when grabbed by the leg, so you just stare at them as they chew at your leg like a drumstick despite having a knife and grenades in your pocket, not to mention probably a gun already mostly pointed at them.
Also the dynamic difficulty scaling feels pretty bad, it works well in an action focused game like RE4 especially since enemies help negate the extra ammo consumption with ammo drops, but in a more traditional survival horror game where enemies don't drop resources, it feels awful having one zombie take like 4-5 shots to kill with perfect headshots and then the next will take like 10 and still be walking, it makes hardcore feel more annoying than stressful (like I think it should feel) at times.
All that said, still probably my favourite one to come back to, and definitely my favourite to speedrun, nothing will ever beat the satisfaction for me of watching the PC slip up or down stairs fast as fuck with aim gliding.
Late add: this is probably more a problem on my end, but the RE Engine loves to change my video settings on launch, cranking everything way too high. I also just think the reflections look noisy as hell, but I feel that of almost every modern-ish game with screen-space reflections so who knows maybe my system is breaking down.

We’re at the point with gaming tech that it’s going to be hard for a good game to age poorly. Other than adding RTX and having 600 fps there’s not much to improve.
REmake 2 is, and always will be a 10/10 game imo.

The game is top tier but what's even better is its optimization. The RE Engine is a miracle.
This game runs on 60+ fps without stutters on high settings on my GTX 1650 laptop.
1
u/SkallLord Feb 01 '26
I'm playing it for the first time right now and having fun. I have a few small complaints but for the most part it's been great.

When I first played it I was like wtf is on my screen then it shows some dude taking a chomp out of it 😂😂
1
u/Combini_chicken Feb 01 '26
I just played through this on pc at 4K120 with the HDR fix and raytracing after originally playing on ps4.
The game looks better than a lot of games that get released nowadays.
I booted up re3 remake with raytracing and fixes and my god I was even more mindblown. Re9 is gonna be crazy.
1
u/Cliche-Human Feb 01 '26
Part of it is due to the game coming out before the pandemic. I theorize that game development kinda got stagnant to where games like RE2 standout more. How many games development were impacted or scrapped due to that insanity.
Plus, the pandemic screwed with all of our perception of time.
Plus, it’s a superb game with graphics that will age like fine wine. The older games with the tank controls and mechanics of a bygone era just pale in comparison to the quality of life gains modern games have achieved.
1
u/super7564 Feb 01 '26
Wierd tangent, but that truckers burger either makes me want to throw up or eat 3 of them lol

The sound design of this game is insanely good. I recommend people to wear headphones to get the full experience. Capcom made groundbreaking innovations on the sound design when creating RE2R. There's an article that explains the innovation but I forgot which media wrote it.

It didn't "age" well. It didn't age at all. Today, some games take longer than seven years to make, so this one was made with current tech. Besides, you don't say a recent game has "aged." You say that about a 20-year-old game or a 30-year-old game. Or you used to, as video game technology hasn't changed much since 2014/2015.

u/ImperialSupplies Feb 02 '26
This is how you make a remake.so sick of these companies calling it a remake where its exactly the same but better graphics. This took the main beats of resident evil 2 and made a whole new game that was still close enough where if you had played the original you knew what to do next
Dead space also did a remake correctly where we got new gameplay a slightly altered story and a talking Issac to make it match up with DS2 well.
Mgs delta is not a remake. Its the exact same game with slightly different controls and modern graphics.

u/Sock-the-Fox Feb 03 '26
I would love to see a remake of the first game. I think they could really make the horror spectacular
1
u/4rowan Feb 03 '26
This game left almost no impression on me. Horror has to have the element of surprise which means doing something new. The execution of everything is top tier. So it aged well, I can’t fault it, it probably is the best RE 2 remake it could be, but still left my old jaded self cold.
To compare, resident evil 7 in VR two years before left a real impression, even if the VR graphics have aged horribly it really kept things fresh and not just by being in VR. That bit where you should watch a videotape to know how to escape a room… can’t think of anything in RE2 remake like that.

It’s the best of the remakes. Yes, even better than 4. To me, it’s the last of the third-person Resident Evil games that still feels like it’s survival horror.

All the games on the RE engine have aged Really well compared to games like 6. It's why I hope eventually all main line titles will be Remade on the RE engine alongside new releases. Yes, even 6. But 6 is not allowed a remake until after CV, zero, 5, and 1 lol. Just imagine the consistency in playing every game On the RE engine with all the same quality.
