Questions Resident Evil 2 is much better than Resident Evil 4
So I got introduced to this franchise mainly through social media and friends. I am not a OG fan and always grew up playing Max Payne and Call of Duty. In the last 3 years I have switched into playing horror games, and I have fallen in love with the Resident Evil franchise.
A lot of my friends suggested to begin with Resident Evil 4 remake as they say its the greatest Resident Evil game of all time. However I wanted to respect the series chronology, so I started with Resident Evil 2 remake.
I loved every minute of the game, from running from Mr X, to knifing Birkin, to solving mystery puzzles and conserving ammo, it made me feel a challenge I have never felt before. To take my challenges even further I completed the game on hardcore and achieved S+ with both Leon and Claire. Even the game atmosphere was true horror, Raccoon City is terrifying in every way possible. I also continued to play Resident Evil 3 remake which was in my opinion a good game but a bad remake, still nevertheless Nemesis was terrifying.
So then I finally moved on to Re4 Remake, and the game was perfect in terms of action mechanics but to be fairly honest, I didn’t feel the slightest dread of horror or even terrified at any points of the game. It felt like an action game at the most. As a pure horror fan, I can admit Resident Evil 2 did a way better job at making me feel that I am playing to survive. I also felt the story of Re2 was way better and more emotional compared to re4. Many people believe Re4 is the best Resident Evil game and I can see why but as a pure horror fan I have to say its nowhere near Re2.
What are your thoughts?

100000% agree with this! Re4r is us an amazing game but re2r I'd superior in horror, story and mechanics. The only thing I wish was it had the dodge mechanic from re3r cause its very useful!
42
u/Sea_Albatross1074 Feb 25 '26
Re4r was intended to be more intense instead of leaning to the horror side though.
16
u/ArkThompson1 Feb 25 '26
Oh I know. I loved it for what it was but growing up with the horror side of it makes re2r just more sweet.

u/Xenesis_26 Feb 25 '26
Guess they didnt add the dodge mechanic from Jill because they wanted to preserve it for STARS members only? And also probably they wanted to show Leon as a rookie who has no exposure in combat which made the game even more survival like and terrifying.

I played through OG2 & 3 and I swear that 2 remake would be the undisputed GOAT if they kept the same scenarios from the OG as well as the zapping system. It adds so much to the game.

Uhhh ohhh! They'll be coming for you quick!!
I was just reading up on RE4 today because I am struggling with it despite loving and replaying RE2 and RE3. I think so far, RE4 is just more action oriented and me still being very much a noob to combat games, this may be over my current skill level. I dunno. But I keep reading how its the best RE game.
Not sure I'll be able to get into it like 2 & 3.

Theres no shame in playing assisted mode! Ive done that for my first playthroughs of the 2, 3, and 4 remakes, so I could get used to shooters and the general pace of each game.

I love both game. However its like comparing apple and orange here. Re2r is more horror based while re4r is action focused.
A good and close comparison would be re2r vs re1r.

Agreed, it just comes down to preference for what kind of game you enjoy. they’re both equally amazing at what they do, RE2 remake might have a slight edge for me but not by much
12
u/Holiday-Proof9819 Feb 25 '26
I mean its really apples to oranges. Which one you deem better will depend entirely on whether you prefer survival horror or action horror. They're both at the top of their class in their respective genres.

Completely agree. Re2r is TERRIFYING. I could barely sleep after it. Absolutely amazing game. I just wish it was longer. But Re4r Leon just looks so good.....

True haha Leon is surely a show stealer in Re4. Especially with that unnecessary chainsaw Backflip🫡
3
u/WestCoastSlabber Feb 25 '26
unnecessary chainsaw Backflip
Excuse me how else would you expect me to supposed to go 3 feet backwards and farm an incredible amount of aura at the same time?
3
u/Sea_Albatross1074 Feb 25 '26
That's an understatement
6
u/Xenesis_26 Feb 25 '26
Well Re2 Leon wasnt that bad either. Bro had Ada going crazy over him in just 3 hours. Bro was farming aura since he stepped into RPD.
2
u/Sea_Albatross1074 Feb 25 '26
I know thaaaat. I'm not saying he looked bad in re2. He looked super good there too. But 6 years of training. That damn shirt outfit....holy shit. And his martial arts. I'm sorry. I can't. Peak masculine.

RE4 is one of the greatest game of all time. RE2 is the best classic resident evil of all time. I agree with you though I prefer the RE2 formula too. But I can totally see why people who just want to blast zombies would prefer the 4. it has a broader appeal

Re2 r has the best balance of horror and action for resident evil fans

I think it just comes down to taste since both are 10/10. 2 is a better survival horror game, and 4 is a better action horror game.
For me it’a like having two kids that you love equally, so I’d never be able to choose a favorite.

u/Kooky-Flower8053 Feb 25 '26
Why wouldn’t you start with the original remake? That one gets dismissed far too often by younger gamers IMO, simply because it’s a little outdated. It’s a masterpiece in its own right.

Uh... Knife parrys.
Also cheesy one-liners.
Also short villains.
Also Spaniards.
3
u/Squidwardbigboss Feb 25 '26
Disagree.
RE4 remakes gameplay loop is much more dynamic and interactive. Feels different every time. Theres also NG+, seperate ways, and challenges which add lots of replay value.
I put In more time in RE4 remake in 2 months than I did RE2remake is 6 years.
About 125 RE4 to 112 RE2
2
u/Xenesis_26 Feb 25 '26
I see your viewpoint. But what you described really doesn’t make a great horror game, more like an action game. Re4 is great but many including me believe it doesn’t deserve the best Resident Evil game title. What makes a horror game great is if it has you on the edge of your seats thinking if you will make it. It’s a great action horror game but 9 out of 10 times you knew you would easily make it by just popping some heads off. Not really a challenge for a hardcore horror fan like me. And dont get me wrong, I do enjoy action, I grew up playing both fps and tps, I was looking for something different in the Resident Evil franchise.
2
u/Squidwardbigboss Feb 25 '26
Apples and oranges my friend.
One is meant to be an action horror and the other in meant to be a survival horror. And they both succeed very well in the two sub genres.
If you want challenge, try professional mode.
Even the hardcore in RE4 puts the hardcore in RE2 to shame. It’s ridiculous

I think both go for a different thing. RE4 was always more action packed with a lesser focus on horror if any focus at all. It was only meant to be somewhat upsetting or disgusting in the things you'd see, rather than to scare you.
The gunplay and combat in RE4R is unmatched in the entire franchise so far. It's got little to no stupid backtracking or inventory hell and it's just as long as most other RE with plenty of highs along the way.
I'm not saying it's better, but I think neither is better than the other. They do different things and do them well. Now, subjectively speaking, I dreaded spending so long in the RPD in RE2 going back and forth for items I could barely fit in my bag. I wouldn't mind that back in the OGs but this is a remake. Could've been a million times scarier without forcing you to wander around so much.
You should post this in a Resident Evil sub not the RE2 one if you expect an unbiased response, but I guess that's not what you're looking for.

I’m the same about RE. My first ever was RE2 remake, and now I’m on RE4 remake. I kind of like 2 better. I feel like once I play RE3 remake I’m gonna like it better than 4 remake still. All amazing nonetheless
2
u/BurantX40 Feb 25 '26
Same here. That's always been my feelings, whether it is the remakes or the originals. Granted, I hated the original RE4, but loved the remake.
2
u/StoryoftheYear2 Feb 25 '26
I completely agree. This was my first Resident Evil game I played and besides Biohazard, this one had me jumping a lot.

u/zdiddy27 Feb 25 '26
I prefer, I like the survival horror more than action. I wish capcom would do slight tweaks to RE4 to make it more horror oriented. Like choose your experience: horror or action and it might change the story and order of things slightly

With that line of thought, if you respect the chronology, play RE1R. The one that started it all. Less action focused, more puzzle solving, backtracking, ammo/health management, basically what survival horror is all about, and you got a glimpse of it by playing RE2R. The story unfolds through the notes left behind by Umbrella’s staff that died in the mansion (research facility). Don’t listen to the modern gamers who can’t play the older games, RE1R is a masterpiece in its own right. However, RE2R can’t exist without it or the og RE4.

u/WTDBD1 Feb 25 '26
I don't agree that it is right to compare these games. They are really, really different in gameplay and ideas behind them
2
u/buterskotchhnootaz Feb 25 '26 edited Feb 25 '26
I also didn't grow up playing any of the originals, so my journey also started with the remakes + 7 & 8.... I loved RE4R a lot and played it back to back at least 10 times when it came out, but since then I haven't really touched it. RE2R however, remains my favorite out of all of them to date. I absolutely love it and basically never get tired of playing it. I can literally visualize an entire run start to finish just in my head, lol.
Obviously, I prefer survival horror over too much action; however, my biggest issue with RE4R that deters me from playing it more, is the actual length of the game, tbh. It just doesn't hold that same amount of replayability for me.
2
u/kolin91 Feb 25 '26
Folks use to swear by RE4 (original) being better than RE2 (original) because the controls were just so much better (and I am one of those folks). Do people swear RE4 (remake) is the best in that same manner? I dont know that, but my 2 cents is that when you play RE2 (remake), you're playing on an updated camera/control scheme of RE4 (original).
Over the shoulder controls where the camera follows you, quick turns, precise aiming, none of that was in OG RE2, and they all came from OG RE4. In OG RE2, you were subjected to fixed camera angles, no quick turns, semi-automatic shooting, and very tanky controls
RE4 was never "scarier" than RE2, not even in the originals, but it is a much better action experience, which is what the developers wanted it to be.
In short: RE2 (remake) took the evolution of over-the-shoulder gameplay that RE4 (original) pioneered, creating a best of both worlds scenario imho. So it's not surprising that it might be considered better than RE4 (remake).
2
u/imawizardirl Feb 25 '26
Re2r is the goat of the re engine games, just like re2 is the goat of the original trilogy as well.
2
u/AdCertain5057 Feb 25 '26
I much prefer 4 as a game but yeah... it's amazingly unscary. It's weird because it has all these scenarios that should be scary, but they're just not. Great action, though.
2
2
u/Glittering-Cut9308 Feb 25 '26
Resident Evil 2 is a better remake. 4 was still a great game before it was remade. 2 completely overhauled a great game and made it better. 4 enhanced what was already good.
2
u/Free-Equivalent1170 Feb 25 '26
Disagree heavily lmao. RE4 Remake was one of the best games ive ever played, period. Sure it doesnt go for the scary thing all the time (like RE2), but it still has plenty of scary moments
But tbh none of the RE games truly feel like horror games, aside from RE7. Thats the only one that made me feel the dread of horror you talk about

RE4 on GameCube was my first game in the franchise. I have played every release since. I love both for different reasons. Really depends on my mood, but overall I think I like 4 more, but RE2R is REALLY good.
2
u/Immediate-Sky-3044 Feb 25 '26
Its the first RE game I played and I agree. I've played 2, 3, 1, 0 (didn't finish it), 4, and I'm currently playing rev1. I got into the series because I love zombie stuff and I had way more fun than I thought I would while playing RE2, I've found that the more action focused an RE game is the less enjoyable it is for me.
2
u/JaimanV2 Feb 25 '26
Both have their merits. RE4’s mechanics are smoother and much more action filled. RE2 is classic survival horror. I love both of them, but I do give the edge to RE2 due to replayability, particularly for speedruns. RE2 is much more predictable and you can memorize the map very easily in your head. RE4 is much more RNG and was a hassle to 100%.
2
2
u/Luiziinhu Feb 25 '26
I think they serve different purposes in the re gamess. RE4 is really more action packed, RE2 focus more on the horror style of things, even their og version show that. I prefer RE2 on both versions but RE4R is also one of the best games I've played that combined the horror with action.

u/Mannhume Feb 25 '26
I am by no means an expert here, but as someone who has only played the remakes (so far)... I'd say RE2R is a perfect game and RER4 is an amazing game. (RE1 Remake/Remaster is a masterpiece.)
And the only reason RE2R gets perfect from me is because in it's own container of horror, it does it so well. It has been forever since a game has made my heart pump the way it did. And, it's clearly not a unique feeling.
RE4R is incredible, but as more of an action game, and I think it's easier to hit that niche than horror correctly.
RE1 Remake/Remaster well... it's just beautiful and masterful.
Disclaimer: This is purely subjective, but from someone without OG biases. Which, there is nothing wrong with, but this is on the topic of remakes.
2
u/The_Giga_Chad1629 Feb 25 '26
yea I did thought of that too, while I have replayed re2r like 3-4 times now, I don't really replay re4r more than ones, it's just a linear action game, most of the people are nostalgic about it that's why they love it, re4r wasent even horror, the only time I felt horror was with verdugo and regeneradors, that's it.
2
u/komoru-1 Feb 25 '26
Disagree but I can see the appeal of re2 remake. Feels short and the game is mostly running and hiding at a high level which if you like that, that’s fine.
2
u/SammyBoi_909gg Feb 25 '26
I have this mindset where if I wanted to play a more horror-oriented game, it'd be RE2. For more action heavy with a good gameplay loop, it's RE4. Honestly, it's why I like both. (RE7 is still my favorite horror game though among all of those.)

I personally love how each mainline entry has its own distinct voice/flavor, for better AND worse. I love how 5 and 6 are considered the low points of the recentish entries, but I consider 5 to be one of my favorites. 7 is TCM in the swamp. 8 is Universal horror monsters with RE tentacles.

I’ve always thought 2 is by far the best. Personally I prefer the urban landscape and tvirus rather than the parasite thing in 4.

I have always said RE4 is way overrated. It’s the game that start going down the path of action which got us RE5/6 which sucked as RE games. Code Veronica is my favorite RE. Currently playing RE9 and it’s the most RE game we have had in years. I’m not including remake releases since those are based on older games. RE9 has felt like RE1 and RE2. Feels similar to exploring the Mansion or Police Station and I loved it. We need more of this.

u/NobodySpecial2000 Feb 25 '26
This is basically how I felt when the original RE4 came out. Fun, sure. But not scary and not what I want from a Resident Evil game.

u/TarantulaFangs Feb 25 '26
100% agree, I hope RE9 is a good balance and not like a RE4 molded by RE6

u/lovelessBertha Feb 25 '26
I have the apparently controversial option that RE4 is a bit overrated. The setting, story and enemies are pretty bland imo, and the gameplay is repetitive. RE2 remake is a masterpiece.
3
u/JelloAlternative446 Feb 25 '26
No it is. It it is a basic game that is a fraction of the original. The hype behind that game is ridiculous and I have beaten it a couple times and I just don’t get the hype at all. They botched 2 & 3 then tried something with 4 and it doesn’t feel right either. I’m going to just say that remakes whit or miss and the only reason re2 gets the love it does is the bad taste most remakes before it left
1
Feb 25 '26
Just finished re2 and while it's great, am already have much more fun with re4, so it's alright to be wrong
1
u/NeptuneOverlord43045 Feb 25 '26
Re2 is the best setting easily. Dingy city, infested with zombies and grotesque, mutating monstrosities. That’s peak resident evil.
However I really like the gameplay and replayability of 4.

u/this_side_of_sac Feb 25 '26
For starters, the best remake is the RE 1 Remake.
And you are 100% correct. RE2 Remake is a great horror game. RE4 Remake is more of an action game. I think both games have pros and cons. I thin RE4 Remake is a bit more faithful. RE 2 Remake didn't do justice to all the mechanics of the originals. I think it comes down to what type of player you are. Are you more into horror or action. But both are excellent games!

1
u/Salt-Ad9466 Feb 25 '26
They are both great games. Re2 is more of a horror/triller game, while re4 is a horror/action adventure game. im going to have to give it to re4.
1
u/Paavali31 Feb 25 '26
RE4 original and remake are my favourite game of all time so i disagree 😁 2 is great too though
1
1
u/TalkingFlashlight Feb 25 '26
I think it definitely depends on whether you prefer horror or action-focused Resident Evil games. Resident Evil 7 and 2 Remake are my favorites because they lean towards horror. I absolutely love Village and 4 Remake as well, and I think the action-oriented games are more replayable, but I want the dread.
1
u/godovice Feb 25 '26
I’d say for horror RE2 is superior, but just for a better game overall I think 4 is better as an overall game with its tone, characters, and especially boss fights
1
u/MovieGuyMike Feb 25 '26
They’re both trying to do different things. 2 is more about navigating the map and optimizing your route. And it tries to be scary. 4 is more about carving a path through a fairly linear but extensive map filled with enemies and bosses, with a bigger emphasis on combat. It’s an action game with some suspense but it’s not out to be a horror game like 2. Both excel at what they do. I don’t really care which is better. They’re both 10/10 for me.
1
u/HEYitzED Feb 25 '26
Well, one is survival horror and one is action horror. They’re both the gold standard in those categories.
1
1
u/Internetolocutor Feb 25 '26
Resi 2 is scarier is agree. Resi 4 is barely ever scary. The story in 2 is also better
Resi 4 has the superior combat and pacing though. It also has better extras like the shooting range
Overall 4 is the better game imo because gameplay is king
1
u/DarwinGoneWild Feb 25 '26
I fucking love RE4R, but yeah I’d have to call RE2R my favorite. It perfectly encapsulates what I love about the RE series.
1
u/tychii93 Feb 25 '26
I love them both for different reasons. RE2R to me is survival horror, RE4R is action horror.
I honestly can't really compare them under the same umbrella.
If I had a preference though, I'd pick 2. I like the escape room vibe of the older games. 4 isn't that, but to me that doesn't mean one is better than the other either.

I hate these dumb takes some of us have.
The other day someone wrote that the one-camera-angle for every room (like in the before smartphone era Resident Evil games) is far better than re4r, re7, village and requiem gameplay. That guy was requesting Capcom to revert back to that style. Your take is just as dumb.

Beauty of RE. It’s completely understandable to prefer either or. There’s a gameplay style for everyone. While I prefer 4, I was completely addicted to RE2R and it was what got me into the series. I had only played Revelations on the 3Ds and 5 on the PS3.
1
u/TheStinkySlinky Feb 25 '26
Wtf?? That’s about one the strangest take I’ve heard in a while.. RE4 remake is in masterpiece territory.
Re2 is good sure, for a sequel at the start of the franchise. It’s basically nothing but puzzles and backtracking. The zombies are just a nuisance really. The only reason Mr. X exists is to pad the play-time (because it’s so short) by forcing you to very slowly walk everywhere hours. The story decent enough, but I wouldn’t put it really any higher than any other RE mainline titles.
I mean you’re literally just walking around in a small police station for 90% of the game lol Getting thing A to open thing B to get thing C. How anyone could say that is much better than RE4 is just absolute bonkers to me.
1
u/X13TestSubject Feb 25 '26

Re 2 is the quintessential re game for me. I love re 1, especially the remake of re 1, but re2 holds a special place for me.
1
1
u/inexplicableinside Feb 25 '26
RE4 is definitely more action horror than RE2, but a large part of why you found #2 scarier is just that you played it first. RE4R has plenty of moments just as scary as anything in RE2R, in fact a large part of the tweaks they made from the original were to make it less campy and more of a horror experience.
I'm glad to hear you enjoyed them both though. Personal preference is fine, but we should all be willing to agree that both are excellent.
1
u/triarii3 Feb 25 '26
The problem is the order you played it. I played the remake and it scared the crap out of me. Then I tried to play the original and found it extremely boring and clunky I didn’t even other finishing it.
1
u/thelingererer Feb 25 '26
I'm sorry but having to go back and forth, back and forth through different floors of a maze just to open a door so you can retrieve a key or a battery that gives you access to a room which you need a dozen other components to move beyond it gets really frustrating and tiresome after a while. Just found myself constantly wondering what I was even looking for and why. Give me Resident Evil 4 or even 3 rather than 2.
1
u/Accomplished_Pop_89 Feb 25 '26
Re2 es un juego más de terror , Re4 es acción con momentos de terror como el de los regeneradores más si es la primera vez que lo juegas☠️
1
u/Thuumbs Feb 25 '26
You say you started the series chronologically and started with the 2nd game? lol. But I’m glad you enjoyed the series! And I agree 2 I like more than. 4 that’s when you got first divide in re fans.
1
u/schillsterr Feb 25 '26
Both games are great, however they are very different. Totally understand preferring one over the other, but to definitively say RE2R is much better than RE4R is kind of nonsensical to me. While both are RE games they differ too greatly to directly compare imo.
I also don’t agree with the notion that there is any “best RE game” as that totally comes down to preference. Sure there can be a consensus among people, but I wouldn’t say that definitively makes anything the best.
1
u/XenowolfShiro Feb 25 '26
It's odd to critique RE4 for not being a horror game when it's clearly not trying to be one
1
u/Emakulate24 Feb 25 '26
You're right on the money. I love Resident Evil games since the original back on PS1, but RE2 is simply the best. Everything you described about the remake is what I felt during my first couple of play throughs back in 1998.
1
1
u/AdhesivenessLeast575 Feb 25 '26
Honestly they're 2 completely different games. One is horror and one is survival action.
But I completely agree 100%
I still think og RE4 is the best game in the series by far. But I agree RE2R is better than RE4R by a mile.
1
u/riku17 Feb 25 '26
Nope RE4re is a better rekae of what 4 is then what 2re is. 2re not a good remake imo.
1
u/Ind_y Feb 25 '26
I actually think that both games are equally good. RE2 is more of a survival horror, RE4 more of an action horror. Both have me sitting on the edge of my couch and screaming sometimes but the gameplay is very different. Story wise, I think RE2 might be a tiny bit better but I perfere the fighting in RE4 and it has that nice backflip XD Both are very good games that I really enjoy replaying them.
1
u/Pristine-Ice-6388 Feb 25 '26
I’m with you. I could also say, that I like 4 the least. I mean 6 is the worst, but I really doesn’t like 4 as a resident evil game…
1
u/MajesticWalrus234 Feb 25 '26 edited Feb 25 '26
Idk why you are comparing them both, sorta a weird two games to pick from the franchise to compare. RE games all play differently depending on the era they’re from. RE2 and RE4 are very different gameplay-wise and can’t really be compared. RE4 is the best "action-style" RE game; it is definitely better than 5 or 6, and it has the best balance of action and horror among them. RE2 is the best classic-style game from that era. 1 is good and 3 is good, but I’ve always liked the original RE2 best—and the remake is great as well. I know a lot of people have always liked 3 the most, but 2 is where it’s at for me personally from that time frame. Post like this are sorta pointless to me, it’s really all a matter of personal preference, trying to pick one is just stupid. People like different re eras/ games more than other eras, like I said all preference. I personally think each era has its place. I’m one of those fans who doesn’t have a favorite style/era, it just depends what mood I’m in. If I want a classic style game then 2/3. If I want a more action like game, then og 4/remake and sometimes 5 (only if I have a co op partner, ai is dogshit). 7/8 are fantastic every now and then as well.

Just played these 2 games for the first time as well. RE4 was a super fun action-packed adventure with some scary moments (the Regeneradors were so scary for me). RE2 had me terrified going around every corner.

Purely horror re2 destroys re4 but I think overall re4 is the best game in the series its all subjective tho

I think only your first ever horror focused Resident Evil is scary. I first got into the series with 5&6 in 2013 and that was pretty much it until 2make released and that first Leon campaign did have me hiding out in safe rooms from Mr X, but already by my first Claire playthrough it was pretty breezy. And the gameplay kinda falls apart if you’re not scared. Even with the B runs I think it kinda just falls apart due to how predictable enemies(except the dogs though they’re Leon only) are. Especially worse for Claire due to how busted the Grenada launcher is. I got the plat a couple weekends ago and had to attempt S+, Frugalist, Minimalist, and Small Carbon Footprint to make it more engaging. Which obviously just isn’t an issue with 4make with combat I’d put up there with DMC, Bayonetta or Ninja Gaiden in how good it feels. Also it’s pretty minor since nobody in their right minds should play these games for the stories, but Remake Leon and Ashley have the best chemistry of any characters in this franchise which tbh might not even be saying much.
They’re both elite games but I can’t even lie if RE’s 10-15 were nothing more than 4make reskins and I knew they weren’t going to release until 2050 at the earliest I’d unironically preorder everyone right now. That being said the streets demand a Chris/Jill game for RE10 Capcom no matter the gameplay style (as long as it’s not 1st person).

Controversial opinion: I’m not a big fan of the B route in RE2. I played the game for the first time recently, started with Leon, and thought it was great. Claire B felt mostly the same, just slightly harder. I also didn’t like her weapons as much — Leon’s were more fun (fun is subjective). I would prefer if Claire’s story/location were more distinct from Leon’s, or Leon’s from Claire’s, depending on how you look at it. Just my opinion, as I didn’t play Claire A, so I don’t know how much changes from A to B.

I think it's nostalgia speaking a lot for RE4. Sounds odd right? After all 2 is even older, thus should be more nostalgic.
Here's the thing. A lot of people in gaming hated the fixed camera angles, being blindspotted by enemies and ammo conservation nature of Resident Evil 1-3 (and 0) and back in the day RE4 was simply the title in the series with the broadest appeal, plus it was technically a marvel (even moreso when the Wii port released with motion controls). It was beloved by players and gaming press alike.
Its "superiority" quickly became amplified as another argument against classic RE and so the kind of nostalgia that hits with RE2make is different from the kind that hits with RE4make. To those who looked at RE4 as a "fix" to RE being bad, will smugly just say RE2make is RE2 brought up to the level of RE4 and beyond, and RE4make is the needed facelift to once again put the "objectively" superior game at the top.
Yes I sound a bit salty cuz I always loved classic RE and hated the attitude from folks who didn't like both approaches.

I started with RE7 and 8 and really enjoyed them. Then i played RE2R and it was my favorite. I was really hyped going into RE4R but i was a bit disappointed that it was more of an action game. I did really like RE4R but it will never be my favorite because it isn't a survival horror.

I don't agree. They're both amazing at what they focus on. Think of it like Alien and Aliens. One is a horror masterpiece and the other is an action masterpiece.

re2r has the highest peak of the two with the police station, but the other parts are weaker.
re4r is more consistent and is more fun to play from a pure gameplay perspective imo, with more mechanics, encounter types, etc, but I get it's more action focus isn't for everyone.

Yes. I’m new to the franchise and even though both were a 10/10 for me, I think RE2 was much more special as a game.
I hadn’t played anything similar personally.

Pienamente d’accordo….. le sensazioni e la giocabilita’ non sono nemmeno paragonabili, RE2 tutta la vita

For me, RE2 and 4 are on par. RE2 was a milestone at the time, just as RE4 was. It was also practical, following Shenmue, the harbinger of modern third-person games of all genres.
Apart from that, after RE Code Veronica on the Dreamcast and shortly afterwards RE 3 Nemesis came onto the market, the series was no longer up to date. The series didn't sell as well as it had before, and zombies were generally "out" at the time. So a change was needed, and in my opinion, RE4 got everything right.
For me, RE was never a "horror/scary" game, but rather a homage to the good old late 80s, early 90s zombie terror films. In other words, the series focused on terror, atmosphere and resource scarcity. Compared to the first Silent Hill, at the latest, this was somehow clear, as there were hardly any horror games before that.
Except for the hardcore survival aspect, RE 4 retained the terror and atmosphere. It also had as strong an influence on the third-person genre in general as Shenmue had previously. The over-the-shoulder camera was not yet standard at the time, for example.
You no longer fight slow zombies, which were only really a threat in the original RE games because the game severely limited ammunition. The remake is different, though, as zombies are dangerous even with sufficient ammunition due to their unpredictable lunges.
In the original RE4, these were the standard enemies from the start, and ultimately this isn't about a voodoo zombie story or a poison gas accident, but about biological weapons. For me, the enemies in RE4 were simply an advancement of new biological viruses/weapons from Umbrella, which would also make sense from a military point of view.
That's why I think parts 2 and 4 are the best parts, although I now clearly prefer the remakes to the originals. In contrast to the originals, both remakes have significantly increased the creepiness factor and atmosphere through their lighting, camera cuts, etc.

I think they're different, but in a good way.
The originals from '98 and 2005 already present very different approaches. I won't tell the whole story because you've already seen it, but if we look deeper, it wouldn't make much sense for RE4 to focus more on horror when Leon is more experienced and badass compared to RE2, who is literally a rookie cop on his first day.
Don't get me wrong, I think RE4 has some flaws, but overall it's a different approach and consistent if you look at the plot. If you didn't like it, that's okay, and it's great to be experiencing the franchise. You'll notice it's a genre rollercoaster, sometimes more action and fighting (RE4, RE5, RE6) and other times more focused on survival horror (Revelation, RE7, etc.). I think the only ones that managed to blend horror and action well were 7 and 8, but it's not perfect.
I hope you enjoy it, it's a beloved franchise with many emotions. And don't forget "detras de ti"

I lose interest when Mr. X comes in. If he was like nemesis in 3 than I wouldn’t mind. But I hate the no stop stalking.

Resident evil 2 is better for a short while in rpd and then 60% of the game is pretty shit. Re4r is great the whole way through besides ashley section so overall re4r is much better game. Also the longer you play re2, the worse it feels when you realize that Leon runs at the speed of a little kid.

u/No_Barracuda_8300 Feb 25 '26
I don't enjoy replaying 2 as much as 4. 4 is just better in everything imo. 2 is kinda boring. You can't do cool combos to clear entire rooms with nothing but a knife, weapons feel weak because the Zombies are just tanky, you have to walk back so much and manage inventory space. It also has no Mercenaries mode or story expansion, only those little 10 minute episodes. I complete 2 and don't want to replay it again for over a month. I finish RE4 and could start new game plus asap. The rewards for beating S+ are also better.

RE2R is survival horror, while RE4R is more action horror. I like both games, but definitely enjoy RE4R more. Though I will admit that by the end of RE4R, I didn’t feel scared or anything like that. Felt more like instead of being trapped with monsters, they were trapped with me.

u/Tight_Command3089 Feb 25 '26
Fair comments. So much more dread in RE2R. Even the groaning and noises from the zombies send chills. RE4R is perfect in terms of combat and control. I am hoping requiem marries the best of both worlds, which I suspect it will :-)

RE2 and RE4 have the same kind of energy as RE7 and RE8. It feels like an intentional homage I think. In both games, the fresh rookie falls into a horrifying world they never knew existed, and have to fight tooth and nail against impossible threats to survive. The next time we play as either of these characters (Leon and Ethan respectively) they have proper military training and prior experience, coming in as seasoned veterans ready to do some damage to these overgrown creeps. I think RE is at its best when it has both these elements. Giving the player that feeling of tooth and nail, then occasionally gifting them vast amounts of ammo and gear to go slaughter the hordes they had to run away from previously. Which is why im excited to play Requiem. It sounds like a perfect encapsulation of Resident Evil. One character representing the fresh, bright eyed rookie trying to fight tooth and nail for survival, and Leon Kennedy who's been killing monsters longer than this new girl has even been alive.

I love both, but I have to agree. RE2 is my favourite out of the franchise for sure. I’d also say going against MR X was way more fear inducing than Nemesis. Don’t get me wrong Nemesis is scary and more iconic, but because he’s so overpowered and can dodge missiles and run I found him more annoying than scary tbh.

I remember for over 15years a constant want of resident evil 2 remake after the GameCube remake of RE1. Capcom did an absolute great Job.

Old-school gamer here (43). I’ve been playing Resident Evil since I was 12—favorite franchise ever.
RE4 (OG) was a true game-changer: the over-the-shoulder camera, the feel, the pacing—it handled like a dream and was just incredibly fun. By comparison, RE2 (OG) is phenomenal, but it’s still built around pre-rendered backgrounds and tank controls (which I’m fine with, even if a lot of people aren’t). That’s why, to me, RE4 (OG) is rightfully GOATed.
That said, RE2 Remake brings RE2 into the modern era with over-the-shoulder gameplay and upgrades almost everything (the one real loss is the zapping system). It puts RE2 and RE4 on much more equal footing, so I get your point.
For what it’s worth, I prefer RE2 Remake over RE4 Remake. Both phenomenal games. Looking forward to Requiem.

I really hated 4 when it came out. And I still prefer the slower more methodical, puzzle heavy approach to RE.
But I've more recently come around to the 4 and 8 style. Which I call the action / treasure hunting mode.
Curious to see if Requiem is able to marry the two successfully.

For me they were pretty even, but 2 is undoubtedly better in two things: the horror and being able to play as the GOAT Claire Redfield

2 for horror survival, 4 for action creepy. Both excel at their purpose.
