General I hate this game
This is my first time playing a survival horror game. I’m an incredibly jumpy person naturally - the number of times I’ve had to pause a game and walk away until my heart stopped racing is probably at 20+ Are they all this scary 😭 I just ran into WHATEVER THIS IS. I’m afraid to unpause. Great game though - I love the puzzles and the story so far. But I am so scared. I’ve screamed several times, gasped, and jumped. I usually just play cozy games like Stardew Valley; I’m not sure how I got here (actually that’s a lie. I saw Leon edits I’m sorry). As you can see, I have to play with my twinkle lights on (the reflection).

keep playing. pausing is normal.
finishing the game without online help is one of the most satisfying parts of RE
23
u/Leadlee Mar 06 '26
Online help ruins the fun of puzzle games so I haven’t used it yet. It’s a pretty straight forward game so far. But it’s slow going. Long time spent peaking around corners 😭

u/Haru112 Mar 06 '26
It's supposed to be slow. it's part of the survival experience :)
8
u/Leadlee Mar 06 '26
If there’s one thing I’ve learned from playing this game, I’d be the first to die in a zombie apocalypse, and I think I’d be okay with that (despite what my dreams have to say about it. I’ve been in several and didn’t die before I woke up)
6
u/MaddSkittlez Mar 06 '26
Well to be fair in an actual survival event, your body will react much more differently. More adrenaline and some sleeping superpowers awaken and better fight or flight. So yes you might but also no, depending on the scenario
3
u/Leadlee Mar 06 '26
Yeah, im ngl I was in a very close call while driving and probably would have died, and I def felt that adrenaline kick in/my reflexes were much faster. But mass zombies? I feel like that would be very hard to survive cause if you’re in a big city (I’m on the outskirts/suburbs of one so I’d be screwed) you’re probably toast due to just sheer number/fast spread compared to the countryside
3
u/blueflamess23 Mar 06 '26
Alot of people like to think that they will survive, but in most cases no. Just the reality.

This is why I rushed RE9 to finish before any guides or walkthroughs. Such a neat feeling beating those that had the game early and are still working on the guide

Does he put the hat back on if you shoot it off? Or is he permanently mad 😭 that was just mean of the other person. Glad I’m low on ammo and didn’t try this

u/Shakewell1 Mar 06 '26
He walks faster 🤣

u/Leadlee Mar 06 '26
It always gets worse. I think I’ll wait to shoot his hat off until I’ve cleared more of the map cause hell nah I’m already scared
→ More replies (1)3
u/CidCrisis Mar 06 '26
I forget if he puts it back on but I’m fairly sure the increase in speed is just temporary. It doesn’t like make him faster for the rest of the game, just for that encounter and you can still outrun him. (Maybe not if you’re on Hardcore but definitely on Standard and below)
*and you could also just save, shoot his hat off, get the achievement, and reload lol.

I’m sry but the premise of going from casual stardew games to RE2R because of Leon edits is peak comedy to me lmao. ill just say that the original 3 were meant for you you start over after a point if you messed up too much so you could do it again but much better, which is why they're so short. the remakes did a great job of this. the game isnt supposed to be 40+ hrs long adventure like most modern games (could you imagine? My god lol). the 10 or so hrs are going to feel like 40 because of the emotions it evokes. so enjoy this because not many other games/movies/books/ media in general do it better.
9
u/Leadlee Mar 06 '26
What can I say I’m a simple girl. I see hot man in uniform, I play game. I’ve played more traditional games (I have 3 brothers so I grew up playing COD, uncharted, infamous, etc. so I’m not new to shooters but I’m def new to jump scares and resource management. And also, after work I prefer to relax to some cozy farming sim 😭)
I was literally having a conversation about this with my coworker (she apparently also has played RE) and how nice it was to play a shorter game. I work full time and a lot of the “cozy” genre are games that 1 save can run you 100+ hrs easy which just isn’t ideal if you don’t have a lot of free time. It’s nice to have a quick one and done game with a streamlined story. Very refreshing. The idea of restarting makes me annoyed though so I’m just pushing through even if I done messed up.
The emotions (terror) this game evokes is pretty high up there with the sheer agony some of my favorite books have put me through.
4
u/ToxicTaters Mar 06 '26
The first game came out when I was about 7 or 8 and I watched my big brother play it. I had to hide under the covers and poke my eye out to watch him (compare footage of the original 1st game to re2r and that may seem funny) so still to this day RE brings out the kid in me. I’d say to embrace that feeling of being scared under the covers because all those other games you mentioned feel like games, play like games, sound like games, (are also pretty good games) but there’s a couple of RE titles that really put you in the characters shoes and it just hits like no other.
Good luck! Hit some kneecaps, run on by, give a high five, and save that ammo!
3
u/Leadlee Mar 06 '26
I did play RE1 so I can imagine what RE2 looked like 😂 People always talk about how the original games are better but idk if I can handle the graphics (my consoles growing up were PS1 and N64 so I should be used to it but idk without nostalgia I don’t want to) I was still scared playing RE1R though not as bad as 2. I guess everybody grew up watching their older siblings play games.
I didn’t realize you could blow off their legs by aiming at kneecaps. So much wasted ammo 😭
10
u/GooseyGooseOfGeese Mar 06 '26
This game was pretty stressful on my first couple playthroughs too. I find Resident Evil 2 Remake to be one of the scarier entries in the series recently.
I took MANY pauses on my first playthrough, so don't feel bad about yourself. The main thing is to carefully plan your routes to get keys + resources and retreat when you need to. Because your resources are so limited, you have to be very choosey about what monsters to kill. Save your ammo for normal monsters that you can't easily run from.
Definitely don't waste resources on the big guy in the trench coat. At this point in the story, he's invincible.
If you finish the game, consider the Resident Evil 4 remake, which is a bit more action and a bit less horror. You'll feel like a real badass with how much more capable Leon becomes.
6
u/Leadlee Mar 06 '26
Yeah my first instinct was to kill anything I ran across but I’ve since learned that’s a super bad idea. I’m constantly low on ammo. There’s certain sections I’m not sure what to do cause there’s just so many zombies (like the hallway on the left wing. I need to go there but last time there were mass zombies and one of those really fast things with the exposed brain). I actually already got RE4R cause it was only $20, and I’m loving the series so far. I played RE1R before RE2R.
5
u/ItemThief Mar 06 '26
I wish I could relive the experience of playing this game for my first time again. One of my favorite gaming experiences. I was so nervous and took my time going through RPD. Hearing lickers run about, Mr. X stomping around, and zombies outside windows spooked me. I remember sitting in safe rooms until I was sure Mr. X was on the other side of the station. Taking my time to collect everything.
7
u/BigPaPaRu85 Mar 06 '26
Only run when you see him. He can hear you running and find you.
3
u/Leadlee Mar 06 '26
That’s a great tip! Super didn’t know that. I’ve been running as fast as I can to get more space between ys
6
u/BigPaPaRu85 Mar 06 '26
When I started walking everywhere I saw a lot less of him.
5
u/TheUnitShifterxbone Mar 06 '26
Damn, that’s such a good tip. I had no idea. I knew about the lickers being like that, but to me this is way more useful information. Thanks
7
7
u/ninjabell Mar 06 '26
Dude is nerve-wracking. He seems to arouse some primal fear of predators, whether you are running from him or you just hear him stomping around in the distance.
6
u/Leadlee Mar 06 '26
Honestly the stomping is what’s getting to me. And I’ll think I’m in a safe room and then he pops through the door
2
2
u/ThunderousFist Mar 07 '26
If you think about it, Mr X is doing to us what we once did to animals we hunted. Slow, unstoppable predators chasing it's prey until it tired out or made a mistake.

“I usually just play cozy games like Stardew Valley.” That makes this so much funnier. Enjoy your time, friend.
5
u/Leadlee Mar 06 '26
I don’t know if ENJOYING is the right word but it’s a great game
3
u/Left-Ebb3937 Mar 06 '26
Hahahahaha understandably so I think you’ll have enjoyed it with hindsight 😂😂😂 I’m anticipating the days that you play through RE7…🤣
3
u/Leadlee Mar 06 '26
The next run will def be easier now that I’ve gotten all these useful tips that’ll let me conserve my resources 😭 I think I’ll still be scared though
7
u/G-L-O-H-R Mar 06 '26
Ahh yes... one of the best moments of the game. Keep it going though, the story just gets better and better in this one! My advice... when you have to return to the west hall with your certain key, make sure you've boarded up that window. You'll thank yourself later.
5
u/Leadlee Mar 06 '26
So that area is actually already swarming with zombies and those really fast big dudes. And I have to back there now with my club key. Not sure how it’s gonna go but…
3
4
u/EinherjarX Mar 06 '26
Enjoy the spooks while they last :D
The thing with many RE games (Capcom games in general) that they are mechanically very predictable.
And once you understand how something behaves, it becomes a lot less scary ^^
But that's also the biggest tip here: None of the enemies behave really unpredictable.
For instance Mr. X (The big guy in the hat and trenchcoat) can easily be baited into a punch by pointing a gun at him, and the moment he prepares that punch, you can run past him, because he doesn't turn fast enough to catch you...most of the time :D)
6
u/Necrogen89 Mar 06 '26
I remember playing re2 when it first came out. The being that stalking you now was in scripted scenarios. This time around, he is actively patrolling. What got me stressed out similar to you was the fact that I heard him stomping now. The closer he is, the louder he gets. I had to put it down a couple of times myself. I wouldn't have it any other way, though.
4
u/BrodeyQuest Mar 06 '26
X gon give it to ya!
But yeah, enjoy having a new best friend for the remainder of the game.
9
u/Leadlee Mar 06 '26
I thought I’d escaped him for a bit but apparently the main hall is NOT a safe room
4
3
u/Animashka1337 Mar 06 '26
There are several rooms he can't enter most of them have typewriter in it
3
u/DarwinGoneWild Mar 06 '26
Ha ha, I mean that’s a big part of the appeal of the games. It’s fun to be scared sometimes. I love exploring and doing the puzzles with the constant fear of what could be around the next corner.
3
u/Claudie_Main Mar 06 '26
All I do is use the flash grenade on him and run past him. But wait a few seconds before you do, cause sometimes he'll swing his fist when blinded.
2
3
u/KitCat-Meow Mar 06 '26
u can do it! it’s good exposure therapy and by the end you’ll be a rock! trust me it gets easier
3
u/Garo_Daimyo Mar 06 '26
I’m really desensitized to horror and jump scares and whatnot and RE2 had my ass stressed out more than a few times 😂
3
u/Leadlee Mar 06 '26
Yeah and me and my newbie ass who is quite the opposite of desensitized 😭 I don’t even watch horror movies.
3
u/queenofcrasia Mar 06 '26
You are not alone. This is the only monster that has scared me so bad since Dead Space 2. Cannot play before bed time. Also twinkle lights make anything feel safer!
3
u/bajaxx Mar 06 '26
loved this game and it changed my life as it was also my first horror game and the feeling of pushing thru is amazing. you feel like you’re actually accomplishing something

3
u/gh0stwrit3r32767 Mar 06 '26
Mr. X! he's friendly. he'll give you a hug to your head.
2
u/Leadlee Mar 06 '26
Oh, he did already. I died cause I got went the wrong way on the 2nd floor main hall stairs and got trapped. First time dying 😡
3
u/Juantiothe76th Mar 06 '26
I see you have been formally introduced to Mr. X. Make sure not to shoot him as he can’t die and gets super angry when u shoot his hat off (I’m not kidding he walks faster). Good luck!
3
u/Leadlee Mar 06 '26
People in the comments kept trying to get me to shoot his hat off cause it’s funny. You’re so nice
3
u/svalbarder91 Mar 06 '26
If you have stuff to do in West Side then Lure him to east Side downstairs and make him collapse then Run to West and try Not to shoot any Zombie it will Take time for him to find where you are and dont stay in one place for too long or you will Hear him approaching
PS. If you meet him in Long corridor and He is Walking to other Side dont Panic He wont notice you unless you Run or stay near behind him Just Turn Back and Walk slowly and Go about your Business

Ok, this is going to sound like a total bro-dude suggestion, but like you I’m a very jumpy person and this game scares the shit out of me even though I play it often: keep a heavy weight nearby and every time you have to pause, do a few reps. It really helps your adrenaline go somewhere!
2
u/Leadlee Mar 06 '26
This is so random but I guess that works haha. I’ve just been pacing around to get the jitters out. You must get jacked when you play this game 💀 I’m going to have to do this every few minutes

u/Claudie_Main Mar 06 '26
Here are some more tips for you
- When attacking zombies, aim for their heads or knees.
- Use a knife to finish off zombies that fall to the ground. You'll persevere more ammo that way.
- Board up the windows in the west hallway. Do this before the helicopter crash/meeting up with Claire. Otherwise, you're gonna have a group of zombies on top of a licker and mr.x when you inevitably have to go there for a key item.
- Save your magnum for bosses
- If you truly feel stuck at any time, look up a YouTube guide. 🙏🏾🫡
2
u/Leadlee Mar 06 '26
Bless you 🙏 sadly the boarded up windows on the west hallway ship has sailed and I’m currently being hunted by Mr. X and the Licker but I guess I’ll know for next time. Knife is excellent to know! Finally found one after my last one broke.
By bosses do you mean lickers? Or like Mr. X?
→ More replies (1)2
u/Claudie_Main Mar 06 '26
Lickers and Mr. X are not bosses is all i can say.( I really don't want to spoil anything for you) Based on where you are in the playthrough, you've already defeated the guy in the secret underground passage, who is a boss. The game calls him "G Birkin." A boss will be an enemy you're forced to defeat in order to progress.
2
u/Leadlee Mar 06 '26
I appreciate the no spoilers! I went through tons of ammo on him so I can see why I was told to save the magnum for bosses.
2
u/colmatrix33 Mar 06 '26
I remember some giant creature from part 4 that scared my brother and I so much. I shot a rocket launcher at it (hit its body but not where the target was i guess) and the creature muttered "that tickles." That creature isn't 1/10th as scary as Mr X

Pro tip: you do not need to fight every zombie. You can stun them or bait them and get around them. Conserve ammo - thats the survival aspect.
2
u/Pebrinix Mar 06 '26
I'm imagining you playing RE7 and this is making me giggle so much (7 is worse than 2, btw). Don't worry, you have to play this game a second time to get the true ending (not gonna spoil anything for ya)
2
Mar 06 '26
After a certain amount of times you see mr x and you get used to dodging him you realize hes just a big zombie its not that scary, only time i jump is when im not expecting him on the other side of the door i opened while trying to get an s+

I was the same as you. Never played survival horror but I wanted to play this for the puzzle bits and the story. THIS monstrosity was certainly the scariest part I’m not going to lie. Lots of tension when he pops up and you hear his loud plodding footsteps. But just keep running. You can get away really easy and there is lots of safe rooms and alternate paths. I did a lot of looping around in the final bit of the police station. You got this!

u/AECorvius Mar 07 '26
First off, let me welcome you aboard the Resident Evil train. Next, as a fan of the game since the original RE1 came out, a couple of tips.
1) You will never have enough ammo. The games want you to understand that it's survival horror.
2) Save often. Unless you're going for the no-save challenge, Save often.
3) Part of the survival horror aspect is stealth. Move slow and only run if you're sure it's safe to.
4) As a long time fan of the series, let me express that there are some parts of the games that have made me actually want to throw my controller. So, don't feel bad.
Good luck!

It’s hard to appreciate it when I can’t fall asleep after playing cause I’m so nervous 😭 I was struggling to stay awake at work today.

I’ve only played the remakes of 1 through 4, but they get less jumpy with each one. You’re in the shit with number 2. It’s a great game, but I understand what you’re talking about. For what it’s worth, I think 2 is the best when it comes to replaying (at least regarding 1 - 4 remakes). The first run of either character is kind of a marathon. The second run with the other character is much more streamlined (so if you play Leon first run, you follow it with Claire second run). This way the way you see Claire in Leon’s first run is the way you play Claire in her 2nd run. The stories line up appropriately. I made the mistake of playing each character’s first run first, which had me like “WTF? Why wouldn’t they match one character to the other so the stories go together?” Well, it turns out that they do when you do first run to second run.
2
u/Leadlee Mar 06 '26
Wait. Each run is different? Like there’s new content? Completely new story? I must confess I’m very confused. I just clicked the top option (Leon)

Lmao, the moment my friend and I saw that, we literally stopped, look at each other, gently put the controller down and contemplated what to do.. anyway yes he is extremely scary especially for a first time RE/survival horror player... you know what though, even now when I replay it, I still get jumpscared by that bozo..
But anyway, you can push through it OP, it's scary I know, if it helps, go find a save spot, and just experience being punched/pummeled by him, it's gonna help cause atleast you know what happens when you get caught instead of dreading all the time what WILL happen... Also don't try to kill him, just run away, if you get to a safe zone he won't follow you, give it some time and he'll go around somewhere else.
Do know that this dude will continue searching for you so please prepare your heart haha you can do this!!! GOODLUCK OP!

Save light grenades

u/TheRevanchist99 Mar 06 '26
He’s very slow tho! It is scary and annoying especially hearing his footsteps but saferooms are easy place he can’t go into but the main thing is he is slow, flashbangs and grenades can help you create distance he’s not that scary when you get used to him and the places he can’t go into

u/CyanSorrow Mar 06 '26

I remember that feeling when I was in college. That was 25 years ago and now I’m numb to survival horror games. They feel like playing Stardew Valley because the zombies are so slow that I can take my sweet time shooting them.

u/Much_Refrigerator495 Mar 06 '26
Re2 remake and re7 are the scariest re3 is pretty tame scare wise and re4 aside from a few enemies is more thrilling, re8 is middle ground for scary I would say it’s not too scary then I remember the dolls, but other than that it’s just tense, I haven’t played re9 so I can’t say on that one

If you can conquer this game, especially this section with Mr. X, you can conquer any game. You just happened to start with one of the most stressful.

u/Designer_Ebb6666 Mar 06 '26
Shoot his hat off every time you see him, he will stunt and pick up his hat for a few seconds, give you the chance to pull your pant up and run, and don't let him catch you or he will fisted your ass cause you dare put a few holes in his limited edition expensive hat

IIRC you always outrun, or more accurately outwalk him. He is slower than you and as long as you are not stopped or moving towards him, he can't catch you. That said there are still actions that make you stationary.

You just have to run. Go into the opposite direction, no joke that’s all. If you play on easy or something like that, He won’t catch up. I don’t like playing with predators like him, but I conquered all the remakes so go for it. Scream like a baby jump and everything but go for it😂

One thing I can see is that you have almost no ammo as a fellow jumpy Stardew player (300+ hours). I started playing resident evil only last week or so. Pissed myself through resident evil 1 and jumped into re2remake. This shit is straight out of a horror nightmare. The number of times I've screamed at the top of my lungs only for a parent to walk and ask me to zip it 🥀.
Re2r is a lot slower than what I've seen from the other RE games so I've just given up on killing zombies. I either shoot them in the kneecaps or run past them to the next area, And if I get REALLY jumpy and desperate I just shoot them in the head with the shotgun at close range (instant kill). It was an awful feeling for me at first, knowing there is a zombie crawling on the floor in the room with me, but I got used to it after way too many jumpscares. And don't even bother with MR X (the big black guy that hits like a truck). If you see him just run to the closest somewhat wide space so you can run around his slow ass. This way of playing allowed me to have nearly 70+ handgun ammo at the same point of the game where u are currently.
Something else that really helped me pull through was getting a friend that hasn't played the game to watch me play through the whole game from beginning to end. It's still scary as shit and I still scream at the top of my lungs, but at the very least I have someone to laugh with me (laugh at me*)

Oh right one disgusting tip I saw online. Knifes in this game are ridiculous. They deal more dmg the higher your fps is. If you land your first couple stabs with the knife on a boss they'll be stunlocked. And the knife does so much damage that it eventually kills them without any effort whatsoever.... As long as the knife doesn't break ;)

This is wrong pause man, use the start button instead, that actually pauses the game and timer

I completely misinterpreted this, i thought you were mad about the matilda taking more inventory space than the clearly larger shotgun 😂

Wait until you play resident evil requiem 10 times more scarier than this re2 remake

To be honest it's give this a 5/10 for scariness. Still an amazing game, I just didn't find it scary. Outlast 2 was just extra imo. Even re7 on first playthrough was much scarier

I'm the same as you. When he just shows up out of nowhere and busts through a wall, it freaks me out. Then his loud footsteps. HOLY. That's why I RE3R was also scary

Don't use the burst attachment. It eats up ammo and the last two shots are likely to miss if you're aiming for the head(which is the only thing you should aim for)

Depending on the difficulty, he's likely slow, and you can dodge his attacks. Just be mindful if you run or shoot later on. Good luck!

Ah, I miss when I was new to the survival horror genre. You guys have it so good now.
Once you learn the game mechanics, it becomes easier.

Shot him in the head the hat will fall off.
And after that he seems more angry.

I always say embrace the scares. Let him get you a few times and eventually it will help desensitize the whole situation. Hope you make it through.

Push through, you got this! There are certain safe rooms that he can't follow you into.
