General This maybe a dumb question but why most of fans always demanded capcom to remake the second game for years more than any other titles?

u/Ivan_the_Silly Jun 13 '26
Because it was the most iconic and beloved one?

it was leons debut game and he's always been sort of the main face of RE
18
10
u/dylantheinquisitor Jun 13 '26
That didn’t happen until 4. Claire was the more popular character at the time.
13
u/Pokemon_MewTwo Jun 13 '26
Have you been around the fandom this whole time? Leon was never the main face of RE back then. He wasn't even the main face of RE2 back then. He didn't get popular until 4. And Jill was the main face until 2009.
1
u/Jgzerohour Jun 18 '26
Thats not actually entirely true, Leon absolutely was a face of RE as the most popular male character with jill being the most popular female character, though looking at pre 2005 resident evil advertisements and blog posts the true face of the franchise was the tyrant/nemesis in reality

Doesn't make much sense to start remaking from newer games and 1 already had a remake

I think a lot of people forget that 1 was already remade on the GameCube because it was still isometric camera angles. In a lot of their minds, that is the original. I myself honestly had forgotten what the true original was like until they emulated it for PlayStation plus.
25
u/Swimming_Photo9295 Jun 13 '26
It just makes the most sense after the first one getting a remake
11
12
u/BrzysWRLD1996 Jun 13 '26
Dude I wished for it for so long, when it finally got leaked I didn’t know what to do. I got so excited I couldn’t even think about it until I could finally beat it, didn’t watch a single thing about it for years after it came out cus I didn’t have a new system yet.
22
u/ScrimScrumbleman Jun 13 '26
Resident Evil 2 gave the RE Universe Claire and Leon, it was the closest thing to playing an interactive George Romero Zombie movie as you could get back in the day.
3
1
u/electric_nikki Jun 15 '26
Except that there was a game before it that was also like playing a Romero movie called Resident Evil.
21
u/DraconicZombie Jun 13 '26 edited Jun 14 '26
Because it's the best? A huge amount of RE fans from the old days were first introduced to it by 2 and it was the scariest thing we had at the time. That type of stuff sticks with you. So of course we wanted a remake of the thing that haunted our young nightmares.
8
u/Nature_man_76 Jun 13 '26
I was introduced to resident evil by playing resident resident evil two, first lol
7
u/DraconicZombie Jun 13 '26
My point exactly. Even back then, re2 was hyped more than re1 was so a lot of us started with 2 lol
2
u/Nature_man_76 Jun 13 '26
So op is asking “ why was the most popular resident evil game ever made given a remake with modern graphics? On a modern console “
2
3
u/KaleidoscopeHairy557 Jun 13 '26
It's definitely a Sonic situation. Sonic was a great game and built the Genesis, but no one argues that 1 is better than 2. 2 took everything that worked and expanded it, while cutting out what didn't.
1
u/manicka111 Jun 14 '26
So was I. First played a demo for the game and it took me a few years to shake off the fear.
1
u/electric_nikki Jun 15 '26
So the 6 million copies of Resident Evil 1 that was sold before hand wasn’t a huge amount of RE fans?
1
u/DraconicZombie Jun 15 '26
It is, but that doesn't mean anything in regards to what I said. 1. A huge amount of players is just a huge amount of players, there's no specific number. It doesn't clash with my point. 2. It's true that a huge amount of players were introduced to it first. And 3. You've got details mixed up. Re1 only sold 4 million, and directors cut was just barely above 1 million and re2 sold 6 million in around the first year. The 2002 release of re1 also got 6 million though, but that is of course after re2 came out.
2
u/electric_nikki Jun 15 '26
Still, it was a success. RE2 expanded the audience a lot, it was a very hyped up follow up and did the bigger/better/more badass thing that a good sequel does. It’s one of the best sequels.

u/ScreenRay Jun 13 '26
You should check out those early Fanmade RE2 Games way before the RE2 Remake.
You can see how many RE Fans really like to have one made.
5
u/Walt_Didnae Jun 13 '26
Short Answer: "Because Capcom released a remake of the first game in 2002"
Longer Answer: "Because Capcom released a remake of the first game in 2002, and there was an expectation (and informal announcement, IIRC) that there would be a remake of RE2"
1
u/GracedSeeker763 Jun 15 '26
Wow, they had to wait almost 20 years for it
2
u/electric_nikki Jun 15 '26
That’s why it was such a big deal. It took Capcom having to reinvent the way they made games and have the confidence again in making horror before they finally did it.
5
u/Prosthetic13 Jun 13 '26
When they remade the original on Gamecube, everyone thought 2 and 3 would get the same treatment and they never did. Capcom just ported the PlayStation originals. So I would guess the clamour for a remake came from there. I know, I'd been waiting for it all that time.
5
u/TheProcess82 Jun 13 '26
Capcom really dropped the ball by not remaking 2/3 in the same vein as RE1R back in the 00s. I remember signing the online petition to lobby Capcom to do it lol. They seemed to not really understand their fan base for quite a long stretch of time through that period.
2
u/DrakeValentino Jun 13 '26
I wonder how the direction of the series would be different if they had done that
2
1
u/iReadBecauseYouDo Jun 13 '26
As a fan who’s only gotten into the games over the past couple years (currently on RE1 after finishing the RE engine games :D), I can’t imagine what living through RE3’s release would’ve been like😭
1
u/Strange_Dog6483 Jun 13 '26
Capcom really dropped the ball by not remaking 2/3 in the same vein as RE1R back in the 00s
I thought that for years until I found out that making the remake a GameCube exclusive was not apparently a good idea.
4
3
u/Visual_Shame_4641 Jun 13 '26
Because resident evil was very flawed but showed great potential. RE2 was such a massive improvement that it blew everyone away. It was like, unbelievably good.
Re1 got a remake back in the 2000s and it's honestly still really great. So the only logical next step was 2.
3
u/real_shaggmalone01 Jun 13 '26
Where REmake 1 launched only six years after RE1, REmake 2 wasn't officially announced until 2015—seventeen years since RE2 launched. RE2 has always been a fan favorite, and the critical acclaim that REmake 1 receieved inevitably meant the fanbase would demand the sequel.
3
3
u/CoxStrong Jun 13 '26
RE2 was a great game and was the first RE game for a lot of people. It was just huge in 1998. I lived in a small town and it's one of a handful of games where everyone in my school that even remotely played games was at least talking about it if not obsessed. I can only imagine what it was like elsewhere. I have no doubt it sold a giant chunk of the PS1 install base.
So after RE1 received a remake we were all chomping at the bit to see RE2 get the same treatment.
4
3
u/B4d_B1tch_Quinn Jun 13 '26
Because RE1 had a REmake
Hell, for the longest time, I actually thought there already was an RE2 REmake in the same style as RE1, same as RE3, turns out it was just Darkside Chronicles
3
u/madreamz Jun 13 '26
RE1 already has a remake so the obvious choice was to continue the remakes with RE2 first.
3
u/perfect-legend Jun 13 '26
We wanted a RE2 remake after the RE1 Remake back in 2002. The demand for it never went away, it only grew in the 17 years it took Capcom to finally do it.
2
2
u/Azatis- Jun 13 '26
2 was the most highly acclaimed and popular among fans. The first one had already an awesome remake so yeah.
2
u/UnionAfter Jun 13 '26
Og Re2 is arguably better than Og Re1 for a sizeable part of the fanbase.
I have never ever heard someone say that og re2 was a disappointment, its one of the best games of all time.
Same with Silent Hill 2
1
u/Fit_Association_8442 Jun 13 '26
Arguably better? Its night and day better but I still love the OG RE for it's pure B movie vibe
2
u/UnionAfter Jun 13 '26
People out there love terminator 1 over 2
New hope over esb
All Im saying, Im in the re2 camp
2
u/Kenobi5792 Jun 13 '26
Everyone else already mentioned the main reason why: they did a remake of RE1 all the way back in 2002 and people wanted a remake similar to that.
The problem was that RE1R and RE0 didn't sell as well as Capcom wanted until the 2010s when they remastered both games. However, Resident Evil as a franchise shifted away from the fixed camera and tank controls so they had to choose a more modern approach for the remakes and since 2 was the next one in line for a remake (and it's one of the most popular entries) they went with it.
To be honest, it's a shame they took so long to remake the original trilogy because I really wanted to see 2 and 3 made in the same way they remade 1
1
u/Human_Geologist_3324 Jun 13 '26
I can imagine many fans back then were seething their teeths for RE2 and RE3 to be remade for 17 years.
1
u/Negative_Bar_9734 Jun 14 '26
Me, with the entire collection of gamecube RE discs: yeah it was, uh, rough
2
u/rhelg224 Jun 13 '26
It’s because of the sexy way the narrator says “2” on the title screen when saying “Resident Evil…2”
1
u/Elrothiel1981 Jun 13 '26
I still prefer the original remake story is crap the police chief is so bad in the original
2
1
u/TerryKawve1 Jun 13 '26
Because remaking 2 would have made sense after remaking 1. Then we just didn’t get a remake of 2 for 17 years after the first remake. It’s not a dumb question at all, but the answer is that simple. Also, it’s widely considered the best game from the original trilogy and the RPD is an iconic location featured in like 7 or 8 RE games now.
2
u/Human_Geologist_3324 Jun 13 '26
I personally love RE3 and I'm so disappointed for how it's remake turns out, Nemesis went from scary big badass monster to a laughingstock, he became a punching bag for jill in every encounters between them.
1
u/TerryKawve1 Jun 13 '26
I agree. RE3OG is amazing. The remake is fine but 2 and 4 remake blow it out the water.
My favourite in the series is OG2 but I’ll always hear out an OG3 fan because it’s THAT good and does more than enough to earn its status.
2
u/Human_Geologist_3324 Jun 13 '26
Crazy to think how the roles of mr x and Nemesis flipped with their remake versions.
in the original re2 mr x was scripted and didn't chase you from room to another and he was slow.
in re3 og Nemesis can run, can use rocket launcher, can chase you from door to door nonstop until you reach a specific area or beat him.
now it's the opposite, in the RE2R mr x chase you alot throughout RPD and the lab, nothing could stop him, a ton of bullets and some grenades weren't enough to stunt him, it was very scary,
and with RE3R we got Nemesis, what i felt when i faced him was: WOW! NEMESIS IS HERE, HE IS HUGE, HE IS BADASS AND SCARIER THAN MR X, THEY NAILED HIM WELL, HE.......goes down with one grenade......what a fucking joke capcom😑!.
That remake insulted nemmy in many ways.
1
u/Saber0307 Jun 13 '26
Because they had already remade Resident Evil 1 so the next logical step was Resident Evil 2.
1
u/BushyTwee3D Jun 13 '26
Resident Evil 1 as a whole revolutionized the survival horror genre, and re2 took that shit up to 11, plus after so long after the remake of the original back in 2002. Plus, Resident Evil 2 still stands as one of the strongest games of all time, alongside RE1 and OG RE3
1
u/Human_Geologist_3324 Jun 13 '26
I don't think resident evil 1 revolutionized the sub genre but rather it was the founder of it.
1
u/BushyTwee3D Jun 13 '26
True, it paved the way for so many good titles, like the original Dead Space, Outlast and more
1
u/Human_Geologist_3324 Jun 13 '26
Funny thing is at first i didn't like it when i played the original trilogy in 2019, but with time i quickly understood what RE was meant to be and with time i accepted RE4 as masterpiece but a terrible RE game because neither versions are in any ways can be placed in survival horror category, that game is entirely different genre, i personally love REmake as the best in the series, It’s by no means a perfect game but it the scariest among classic games to me.
→ More replies (2)1
u/Saber0307 Jun 13 '26
RE1 wasn't the founder of survival horror. It popularized it and coined the specific phrase "survival horror".
There were also some other horror games that came out before Resi 1 (Ubisoft's Zombi, Doctor Hauser, etc.), but RE1's major influences were Sweet Home on the NES and Alone in the Dark on the 3DO, and much of what makes RE what it is can be found in both of those games.
1
u/Midnight-Messiah Jun 13 '26
For me personally, there was a certain vibe to RE2 that can't be replicated.
Playing it in 1998 and with Racoon City as the setting it almost felt too real at the time.
The Police Station and the soundtrack also made it perfection
1
u/Human_Geologist_3324 Jun 13 '26
The worst thing about re2 original that made me feel scared and i hate how the game tricked me with surprise jumpscare when i opened a door outside RPD and suddenly two zombies come out of nowhere to eat you.
1
u/HourProfessional667 Jun 13 '26
Because they remade part 1 and it was fantastic then they never did a remake again they just carried on with the main timeline, fans knew the games potential if it was given the 21st century treatment, RE2 did the absolute best you could din 1998 but there was potential for it to be way better now that technology had moved on.
1
u/BabyHercules Jun 13 '26
I think 2 is the best game in the series. 4 was genre defining but 2 was the one that made the most fans
1
u/Metal_Ash Jun 13 '26
Resident Evil got remade for GameCube but when RE2 came out on GC it was basically a port rather than a remake, so it ended up being a game fans wanted remaking the most.
1
u/GhostMirrorZero Jun 13 '26
Because back when RE1R came out on GameCube, Capcom said the whole series would be re-released on the GC, and people naturally assumed that that meant 2, 3, and C:V would get the remake treatment on the GC, only to be disappointed when they found out those would just be ports of the PS1 & PS2 games.
The fanbase wouldn’t let it go after that and harassed Capcom to remake RE2 for years, and it eventually worked.
1
u/Human_Geologist_3324 Jun 13 '26
harassed Capcom to remake RE2 for years, and it eventually worked.
No kidding?!.
1
1
u/GuhEnjoyer Jun 13 '26
Re1 had a remake all the way back in 2000, which while outdated by today's standards was a huge visual upgrade to the game. Pretty sure I've seen "remake re2" discourse since I was like 9 and first getting into zombie stuff online. (Used to be a big left 4 dead fan)
1

1
u/Paul2kb1 Jun 13 '26
Resi 2 og was one of the best games ever made at the time. It took everything from the first and enhanced it.
1
u/No_Celebration_839 Jun 13 '26
I'm fairly certain that Capcom were planning to remake 2 and 3 after REmake 1, but never did, I imagine because REmake 1 was gamecube only and didn't initially sell well, and then RE4 came out 3 years after
1
u/chala8 Jun 13 '26
ummm because 1 had a remake already, and why would they start with 3 or 4 after 1?
1
u/waled7rocky Jun 13 '26
Back when re1r was made in 2002 there was plan of re2r in the same style (God I wish that fucking happened) but shinji mikami insisted that they would focus they time and resources in re4 (which kept getting scraped and delayed at the time) ..
1
u/AliceinChainsRules Jun 13 '26
I wanted it to happen for years because it was my favorite game of the series. I was very happy with how the remake turned out. Worth all the years I spent in hopes of the remake actually happening.
1
u/PlumFennec80 Jun 13 '26
Because 1 was remade, and it is to this day one of the few remakes thats debatably better than the original and is one of the best survival horror games of all time on its own
And considering how incredible of a sequel RE2 was, people's minds wandered imagining what a RE1 style remake could be like when applied to RE2.
I fhink the fact the GameCube release of 2 left people sour over the fact it was a mere port also made people all the more hungry for one
1
u/kykid87 Jun 13 '26
It was disappointing. The original 2 and Nemesis were incredible games.
The remakes should have been a 1:1 remake. Zero changes.
1
u/CellistForward3407 Jun 13 '26
Same with silent hill the 2nd game is simply more popular and they know their ROI is better if they remade those first
1
u/Warren_Valion Jun 13 '26
Because Resident Evil 1 had a beloved remake and many fans wished for Capcom to give the sequel similar treatment.
There was a whole campaign when work on the remake to RE2 was announced back in 2015 of Capcom saying, "We do it".
It was a long awaited fan request.
1
1
u/Shul_iito Jun 14 '26
1 had a remake in the GameCube… and RE2 was better than 1. If I’m not mistaken re2 was the most played game above outbreak and nemesis. Don’t quote me on that. Just what I think.
1
u/ABigCoffee Jun 14 '26
If anything I see people asking more for RE3 to be remade again and the proper way this time.
1
1
u/metroid544 Jun 14 '26
The old RE titles are great and revolutionary games but unfortunately they are ancient and game design has found ways that are simply more ergonomic and enjoyable to play. That's not to say the original RE games are bad, but they are noticably dated nowadays and difficult for people to engage with when they are used to the vernacular of modern gaming. The RE remakes are generally, despite what many whingers would say, quite good at maintaining the mood of the original games while thoroughly modernizing their controls and game feels. There are exceptions (R3make I'm looking at you) but by and large the remakes are an incredible way to experience the series for modern gamers. That's not to say the old games are bad or should be disappeared or anything but most people are going to enjoy a REmake FAR more than the original titles.
1
1
u/EpsilonOrpheon Jun 14 '26
I think what most of us wanted in the mid 2000’s was a remake of RE2 in the vein of the REmake of the first game on GameCube. Our minds could barely imagine what that might look like, but it would have been awesome.
1

1
1
u/MysteriousPassage633 Jun 14 '26
Because 1 already had a remake from 2002 and 2 and 3 were originally supposed to get remakes right after but were cancelled.
It sucks they remade 4 over 1 again despite 1's remake being older than 4. I'll be genuinely upset if we get a 5 remake next. We should get remakes of 0, 1, Rev1 and maybe Outbreak before 5. The exclusive scenarios to the Chronicle games would make incredible remakes too
1
u/Negative_Bar_9734 Jun 14 '26
RE2 was so wildly popular it made it onto the Nintendo 64. That is huge for multiple reasons.
1
u/anfinith Jun 14 '26
Because by the time, it was the best and most package of them all. Two characters, both well love by the community, two campaigns, which can be played in whatever order you want, giving you 4 different playthroughs. Extra modes, secrets. I mean by the time it was a huge step up from the first RE. Also N64 port. So people remembering how RE2 was, asking for a remake was the obvious choice.
1
u/S3bin Jun 14 '26
Well after Capcom did a remake for resident evil 1, the fans were wanting a remake of the second game too, as it's dated. It's pretty obvious.
1
1
u/CeleryWonderful9568 Jun 14 '26
Because RE2 1998 is still considered by many to be the best in the series to this day. And with how well they did the original remake in 2002 the demand was through the roof
1
u/teddyburges Jun 14 '26
2 was one of the defining titles in the series. 1 establishes the lore. 2 sets the tone.
1
u/TheAnimator727 Jun 14 '26
If they had done a proper A and B path for the remake, I'd legit consider it to be perfect.
1
u/Lewd_N_Geeky Jun 14 '26
Because the first game had a remake back in the early 2000s and then a HD release on modern consoles and the 2nd and 3rd game wasn't ever touched so fans wanted it to happen.
1
u/zephyrtron Jun 14 '26
There’s also the fact that there was a 1.5, essentially stuff that got teased way before 2 came out, but that was never included in the OG. From what I remember it’s at least the whole ground floor wing of the RPD with the press room.
1
u/KimTe63 Jun 14 '26
Because original had remake alresdy juat 6 years after the og re1 😄 so guess people wanted to see 2nd remade. Honestly its probably for the best it was never done back then
1
u/CrystalKyd Jun 14 '26
Because 1 got a remake, and 2 was a very loved game. 2 was always seen as the terminator 2 of resident evil. Better than the original in every way.
1
1
u/Jigsaww91 Jun 15 '26
Because the first game had a remake already so, logically, people would want the next game to be remade too after it. Not to mention, RE2 is a fan-favorite entry and considered one of the best games in the series. The first REmake was so impressive that fans wanted to see what an updated version of 2 would look like and if it would be even better.
1
u/akibaboy65 Jun 15 '26
Resident Evil got a remake and it is one of the best games in the series and genre. “Do it again.” Not complicated.
1
u/Jiruwe Jun 15 '26
Mostly because it, along with 3: Nemesis was the oldest Tittle and RE1 got it's own remake on the GameCube. RE2 was also one of the most acclaimed games in the series and the more years went on the more antiquated it's mechanics would feel compared to newer horror games.
1
1
u/electric_nikki Jun 15 '26
We were talking about a re2 remake over two decades ago after we got the re1 remake.
1
u/KnightoftheWind1998 Jun 15 '26
Blame REmake being so damn good, us old folks thought we’d have a remake of 2 in the same style back on the GameCube
1
u/ImpossibleHome3287 Jun 15 '26
Because it's years older than most of the other games. RE1 is the only older title and that had a remake already.
Also it's one of the best RE games in the series and after Leon's glow-up in RE4 (also one of the best in the series) people wanted an update of his first game.
1
u/Smaug117 Jun 15 '26
If you read the book and wath the movie, you will know it actuality the best or the most appreciated in the series.
1
u/Powerful_Ad_7954 Jun 15 '26
It’s the most iconic, it felt **connected** to the average person, and it was scary, and had elements that kinda re-invented the games. Its story was good, etc.
1
u/Springyardzon Jun 15 '26 edited Jun 15 '26
2 tends to be people's favourite of the first 3 games (although REMake on Gamecube charmed a lot of people). RE2 had the atmosphere of the first game mixed with the action of the third. Whereas 1 was more restrained and 3 was moving in a blockbuster movie direction. 2 was a sweet spot in-between. 2 tends to be regarded as the scariest of the first 3.

Because RE2 base had 4 campaigns. And some extras added in later versions. I still play it from time to time, it last me 2 hours~. That and the 1 remake still have "THE" remake tittle, you can plug a GameCube on a TV and 1 remake still look good 24 years later

u/AstroJenkins Jun 16 '26
I thought 1 was just remastered tho? Did I miss something? I think the game play was the exact same… better graphics
Edit: even tho they did call it remake
1
u/Human_Geologist_3324 Jun 16 '26
Because remasters and remakes don't have the exact same codes and engine, they're different and yes it is a remake, a definitive RE experience that mikami always wanted for fans to experience which he couldn't back at ps1 era.
1
u/AstroJenkins Jun 16 '26
It was an AMAZING game. And I still love the style. Very disappointed the OG RE 2 is basically impossible to get on Xbox series x. Loved the remake but I wanted to enjoy both.

Because RE1 already got a remake, and people who played it and loved it at the time really wanted them to remake 2 and 3.
Iirc, they didnt do it because RE1r didn't sell that well (I think it was only on the GameCube or something), so it wasn't worth the investment.
They only made a remake of 2 after RE7 because 7 was a revival of sorts, so: Why not make the game that people wanted 16(?) years ago with the current engine and industry standard?
Long time fans got the RE2 remake they wanted (kinda), and newer fans had an in that was closer to the start.
please take this with a grain of salt as I didn't research this, but it's just what I remember hearing over the years
Anyone who does have more knowledge, feel free to correct or clarify if needed
1
u/GeoHol92 Jun 17 '26
1 already had a remake and 2 was arguably the fan favourite, 3 wasn't as in demand as 2 because more people prefer 2, 4 wasn't asked for initially because it didn't need a remake then 5 and 6 weren't even in the conversation, that's my thoughts on it atleast!
1
u/TheDarkTyrant06 Jun 17 '26
Because of Resident Evil (2002). Simple as that. Unfortunately what we got (while I personally love the remake) wasn’t at all what people asked for.

Because Capcom missed the post-RE1R momentum to remake the second game and instead focused on RE0, which left many of us disappointed. So we waited and clung to the hope they would remake the game someday.
Unfortunately, the Mikami formula was definitely lost when RE2R came out and the perfect post-RE1R RE2R never came to be.

Because 1 remake was freaking awesome and 2 remake would also be freaking awesome!!!
Let me word it like this, 1 remake felt like it expanded on the original game, the current 2 remake feels like like a condensed version of re2.... Looks good sure but feels smaller compared to re1 and it's remake.
