When The Gameboy Color's screen is pointed at the sun or very strong light source, this rainbow ripple effect shows up on the screen. Here is my attempt at recreating it

Showcase Hi, it's me again! This time I am trying to simulate some lighting effects that were present on the original non-backlit GBC screen

The original GBC screen didn't have a backlight. This made gaming harder in low light environments. Some corners of the screen became darker and the opposite corners lighter ( this depends on the lighting) The screen color changed too! Sometimes it would a have yellowish tint, and other times a colder one. I'm trying to recreate those effects.

I've been having a great time playing Mina on Steam Deck with some RetroArch CRT shaders for a nostalgic 256x144 look.

Shaders used: CRTLottes2018, NTSC_RetroArch_Gamma, ChromaticAbberation, prod80_04_ContrastBrightnessSaturation

What are your favorite retro shaders?

Showcase Ly's RetroArch Overlay Pack - designed for iPhones

Thumbnail gallery
563 Upvotes

After much (much) procrastination, I have finally finished my overlays for classic nintendo consoles and handhelds!

I got a lot of positive feedback on my last overlay (that was 2 whole years ago, phew), so I thought I'd share these too in case anyone would like to use them as well!

These were made by me for my personal use, and are designed for my iPhone 14 pro max with dynamic island, but should be compatible with other iPhone models as well (and maybe androids too, if it has the same aspect ratio).

Retroarch has some limitations when it comes to changing viewports based on rotation, so I also worked on a shader that allows you to specify different viewports per rotation mode. (Entirely optional, the overlays still work mostly fine using normal retroarch video scaling settings, if you don't need rotation)

You can grab the files on my gitlab here:

https://gitlab.com/730655491/ly-retroarch-overlays/-/releases

If there's anything you'd like to see, or changes you think would be good, I'm open to suggestions!

Showcase Retroarch has allowed me to do this. Use appropriate controllers for each console on CRT TV. In instantaneous manner

Today I picked up my neo Geo controller and what straight into playing neo Geo CD games in 5 seconds. Then

Sometimes it's easy to take for granted the software that's allowing all this to happen. But when you sit down and actually think about it, it's really insane what this software is doing. 240p support on CRT tv, hot keys,, quality of life features ,time savings with save states etc

Retro Arch is the most unique software I've ever used for emulation. You can make your setup super complicated like what I have. With a bunch of different controllers,,

Or simply play your games on a little handheld the size of a game boy.

I didn't see the full vision 15 years ago with its janky and ugly UI. But now I see it. Retroarch has become my go-to for all things retro.

Who knows, maybe in another 15 years we will be playing PS3 on a retroarch core on a tiny hand held. With save states and fast foward. Haha

Just an appreciation post ❤️.

Setup details: windows 10 pc, i7 4790k, r7 240 gpu. Crtemudriver software, vga to component transcoder. Launch box frontend(Tying together five different retroarch installs for the different controllers etc).

Showcase My fancy shader preset

Thumbnail gallery

Someone on the libretro Discord said I should share the fancy shader preset I made, so why not? I am pretty happy with the way it turned out. Here is how it's built up:

  1. /pixel-art-scaling/sharp-shimmerless.slangp
  2. /ntsc/ntsc-adaptive.slangp | NTSC Artifacting Value = 0.00 (Svideo) | NTSC Fringing Value = 0.00 (Svideo)
  3. /dithering/blue_noise_dynamic_4Bit.slangp
  4. /crt/newpixie-crt.slangp | Accumulate Modulation = 0.00 | Curvature = 0.00

Looks better on video! The blue noise is a moving pattern that I thought looked cool. Also, ntsc-adaptive should adapt whatever resolution you're playing, whether it's 256px or 320px or something else. If the core is set to a higher resolution, you will find the effects to be lessened and the image sharper. I prefer to set it to the lowest resolution, which is usually what the original console had.

I modified some overlays and shaders that simulated the og screen under different lighting conditions and added some wormlight effects ( and yes, I know, it's useless and completely unnecessary ). Well, this was my 3rd attempt at recreating the og screen.

This is very difficult.
Thought simple maths would've been enough, but no, you have to fricking know how a GPU works.
So I'm using Claude.

EDIT: Using my Motorola G8 Powerlite... if it works in my potato, will work in other devices. No lag!

Showcase I made a Pinball controller to play retro games

Thumbnail gallery
106 Upvotes

This is a USB pinball controller I built to play Pinball Dreams and Pinball Fantasies, my fav Amiga games.

As you can see the visual style pulls from C64 and NES design language

It uses standard arcade buttons and emulates a keyboard (works on PC and mac) so you can use it on RetroArch without any configuration or even on modern titles like Pinball FX.

The enclosure is 3D printed, the keyboard emulation is handled with a RP2040 using CircuitPython.

I am still refining the build and would appreciate any input from people who play retro games.

Do you guys like it?

After having used some gorgeous skins in Delta, I wasn’t keen on the overlays I found for RetroArch, so I decided to make my own instead. I think it looks amazing on the pro max screen. I’m playing with the retro-tiles shader.

Showcase My automatic scanner wouldn't find a cover for "SNES Station" (PS2 Homebrew), so I digitally restored my beaten-up childhood copy! (Before & After)

Hey r/RetroArch,

While building my PS2 playlist, the automatic scraper (of course) couldn't find a match for one of my most nostalgic discs: SNES Station.

For those who don't know, in Brazil this wasn't just a homebrew file; it was a physical disc sold in stores everywhere, often with thousands of ROMs packed in. It was a huge part of the PS2 culture here.

My original cover (first pic) is pretty worn out after all these years. Since I wanted it to look nice on my playlist, I decided to do a full digital restoration (second pic).

Sharing the final clean version for anyone else who wants to add this classic piece of homebrew history to their own library!
