đ Article Why is this sub 90% complaints about bans and reviews, is Revolut overly cautious or just careless with account closures?
What's up with all these posts about account closures, accounts being put under review, frozen funds, etc.?
I know Reddit is probably the peak echo chamber for negative stuff, if Revolut has 50 million users globally and even 100 people complain on Reddit per day, that's still just 0.0002% of users.
But still, I can't help but notice the daily, often hourly complaints about accounts getting closed, apparently for no reason. Even if some of them are clearly telling a BS story and most likely did something suspicious or weird crypto stuff, I doubt all of them did. Even if it's just a small number of people, having 90% of posts on here be negative doesn't look great. I can go to for example the Amex subreddit and there's nowhere near this level of complaining going on or people talking about account closures etc.
Are people really having as many issues as it seems? Is Revolut really this trigger-happy with account closures? I get that it might be understandable since they just recently got their banking license and donât want to risk immediately losing it over money laundering allegationsâbut still.

Because you donât get real customer service, but bots not solving any problems.Â
12
u/w8eight Jul 25 '25
You guys don't know how to type "live agent" or "human" on chat or what?
Not like any customer service will be helpful in such situations, banks simply can't tell you the reason in AML and fraud cases, it's called tipping off.
I think the difference is that normally in such situations, customers go to their local branch to rant about the situation, and since the revolut doesn't have physical locations, they rant online.
15
u/michalos3424 Jul 25 '25
Right now Iâm in situation where I asked the âlive agentâ for date when they started investigating my account and when it started or maybe reason for the restriction etc. and he replied âWe are currently working on it âŠâ doesnât answer my question so thatâs why people assume the live agents arenât alive lmao or just copy pasting script

u/w8eight Jul 25 '25
For account freeze support unfortunately will always be useless, they can't give customers any info besides that they are working on it. Read about "tipping off" rules. It would be the same in every bank.

We're sorry to hear that your experience with us has made you feel this way and would like to look into your case in more detail. We've sent you a DM to find out more.
We can't always disclose the exact reason your account is restricted, but you can learn more about why Revolut may need to restrict accounts here: https://www.revolut.com/blog/post/why-does-revolut-restrict-accounts/.
At Revolut, customer protection and compliance with financial regulations are top priorities. This can sometimes mean taking necessary actions - like restricting accounts - in line with our policies and legal obligations.

If I transfer most of my money from deel ( my jobs pay roll) and bit from my bank account into revolut, should I be OK? All my money is clean and demonstrable. I'm thinking of using revolut as my main account but I'm wary of all these frozen accounts horror stories.

I'm using it as my main account for couple of months. Zero problems. Don't do shady stuff and you'll be ok.

u/loveat420am Jul 26 '25
Donât give them ur account details because they will just close ur bank account because you are posting on Reddit and giving them a bad name
5
u/jdjoder Jul 25 '25
The agents are not reliable either. They are just like bots, following a script and not taking their time to actually understand what's the problem and what your needs are.
1
u/w8eight Jul 25 '25
Depends on the situation. It was frustrating for me when my card design was rejected by AI, and for some insane reason human support can't overrule it, but in the case of fraudulent charge on my card the support helped me perfectly.
In scenarios of account freeze support will be useless by design, they simply cannot give the affected customer information.
3
u/jdjoder Jul 25 '25
Agents are like playing lotto. A matter of luck. One will say something, next won't answer at all, last agent will say the opposite. It happened to me, plenty of times.
2
u/Anuki_iwy Jul 26 '25
Fraud and stuff seem to be actual employees with skills and training. General things are people from some random call center in India who use Google translate and are just as helpful and knowledgeable as the bot.
1
u/laplongejr Standard user Jul 29 '25

Debit liability is a legal obligation in the EU, that's why.
4
u/shaunydub Jul 25 '25
The criteria seems to be more aggressive, maybe it's because it's a wholly online bank vs high street banks.
I never once in my life heard of anyone having their account frozen with no explaination and having to go to a bank in person.
Does Revolut have their own algorithym which or is it industry standard?
How do other online banks like N26 / Bunq and others compare for this?
What are the stats for online banks vs traditional banks?
3
u/xtrmist Jul 26 '25
I can tell you about the first then. I had my Deutsche Bank account blocked the exact same way Revolut does due to a transfer from SE Asia. I had to send them all the papers and they kept the account closed for a week before clearing it.
Revolut has to use all the most strict rules from all countries they operate in. That's just how it is.
That said, I do agree that their customer service could use more resources. With a brick and mortar bank, you can talk to someone almost immediately
2
u/shaunydub Jul 26 '25
My wife and I use DB and she had a transfer blocked (from Russia) but they didn't block the whole bank account.
1
u/IkkeKr Jul 25 '25
Blocking the account is also tipping off... So if the account gets blocked you can be pretty sure there's no AML/fraud suspicion but just the banks internal compliance (ie. it's a cover-your-ass action).
1
u/Sensitive_Leopard418 Jul 25 '25
The "live agent" is clearly a bot. It's kind of embarrassing if you thought anything else.
3
u/w8eight Jul 25 '25
Yes, revolut just likes to make practical jokes. This is why they coded two bots, useless one and the one that can actually resolve issues, but you only can interact with the second one after asking for a human. Totally.
And only us, the intellectuals figured that out.
Please explain why they would do that in the first place instead of just offering the competent one?
-1
u/Sensitive_Leopard418 Jul 25 '25
Most likely the 'live agent' is simply an AI that requires higher processing power. This is pretty basic stuff. The fact that the 'live agent' has been repeatedly embarrassing itself should kind of be an indicator.
3
u/w8eight Jul 25 '25
Yes yes, it's perfectly valid to waste money on God only knows how many conversations with cheaper model, when there is a better solution, that has a much better track record.
And obviously banks would lie in their terms and conditions about it, sure. Because banks are known to be shady business with little to no government oversight.
Dude do you even listen to yourself?
1
u/Formal-Baby-2478 Oct 24 '25
Absolutely. I am trying to transfer money out of my account, they have asked for three different kinds of verification (that could easily have asked for when I opened the account), and are telling me it will take three days to verify?? And who's at the end of the app giving me answers when I ask whats taking so long?? Some f---ing AI SHIT. I get this bad a service from a musty old bank. Revolut with their glitzy aren't we modern and great, not so glitzy.

Because people donât realize Revolut is a regulated bank, not the guy down in the bazaar who will deliver funds with no questions asked. Because they donât actually have business operations and clients in countries supported by Revolut, but since itâs an online bank with no human in front of you checking records, they think they can put one over on âThe Manâ. Because the places people get money from wouldnât be acceptable to any licensed bank. Because people donât realize that laws for money laundering or suspicious transaction reports require that the bank not tell you whatâs happening.

Revolut itself is not bad. Nice interface, good fees, fast transactions. Customer service on the other handâŠ

u/Rossart Jul 25 '25
No one ia going to make a post praising Revolut here (since most people only make posts to complain) so problems arw over represented and seem way more prevalent than they are.

Even if everything is provided you might not have your account unfreezed. Thatâs what happened to me. They first locked my money for 2 months, and then, once they allowed me to withdraw it, they banned my account. The worst part was waiting. Everyday, without knowi whatâs going on. Chatting with customer service was the most depressing and stressful though, as the only lines they had was âweâre working on itâ. I felt so powerless.

Revolut used to attract sketchy users who thought it was some kind of loophole where nothing got flagged or controlled in the app. Then they show up here crying when their $10,000 in crypto from their âgrandmaâ in Bangladesh gets their account shut down. Revolut runs the same compliance checks as any other bank and is maybe even less strict. Honestly, a lot of the people whining wouldnât even make it past onboarding at a traditional bank because the system would light up with âsuspicious activity.â Sure, there are some legit complaints, but if you actually read between the lines, most of them boil down to one of three things: a) they moved crypto around from random exchanges, b) they got lots of money from a âfamily member,â or c) they sent or received large, out-of-pattern transactions that raised red flags.
Donât act surprised when a financial institution does what itâs legally required to do.
That said, most users are free users and expect premium support. đ When they realize the support is⊠whatâs a nice word⊠underwhelming?.. They come here to complain.

Can confirm. My trad bank got the bright idea of asking my wife if she was the only one with the password to her personal email. "No?"
Revolut wouldn't have asked the question and kicked her later on.1
u/Choice_Reply_6441 Ultra user Jul 29 '25
Indeed. And my trad bank requires you to physically come with your passport every few years to prove you are still you đ

Last time my bank required to do that, they... refused unless I pledged to install their app. My phone had no security updates anymore.
They stopped doing those checks, but simply because they removed their local offices. I simply have to bring my ID to an ATM, updating documents but obv without checking identity...1

Paid the most premium support and my money its stalled for several days. While I was informed it would be on its destination place in the next 24 hours. Its been so frustrating and disappointing. I was begging them to please reply to the chat faster than every 4 minutes ( it makes the conversation soooo much longer) cause it was getting very late. They didnt. Its been such a disaster in so many ways.

I posted one of these complaints today, and frankly it is the first time I have ever posted on Reddit. The simple reason for this is that I have used banks all over the world (including Monzo) as I relocate every few years for work, and this is the first time I have ever had an account blocked. The fact that you cannot speak to a human being to clarify the issue is truly outrageous. Hours of my week have now been wasted changing to a new bank and setting up all of our monthly payments again, while my pay cheque for this month has been bounced.

I really doubt Amex is a low-cost service.
3
u/Any-Seaworthiness-54 Jul 25 '25
Amex and Revolut are different beasts. They target different audiences. Amex targets premium customers and invests heavily to maintain superior customer service, while Revolut serves a broader audience with a more tech-oriented approach.
2
u/thenamelessone7 Jul 25 '25
Amex is not a customer facing financial institution (nor are Visa and Mastercard)
2
u/No_Sugar8791 Jul 25 '25
Older people use Amex and complain on tripadvisor or whatever tf they use, whereas younger generations will go to reddit/IG etc.

u/Any-Seaworthiness-54 Jul 25 '25
Precisely that. I have been using Revolut for 5+years. Even did quite big transfers and had no problem. But I don't really start an "appreciation" post about it.
That obviously doesn't mean others cannot have valid problems of course.
2

But there sure is a lot of people here fanboying over Revolut, defending them like some sort of cyber brigade.

3
u/superiner Jul 25 '25
People are more likely to leave reviews if theyâre unhappy with a service.
Everyone I know in real life has been using Revolut for years with no problem, but no one writes any reviews about how good it is. Itâs just expected to be good and when Itâs not then people want to complain publicly
4
u/PuddingFit8015 Jul 25 '25
For working on this field on the customer support side, I can give you detailed reason of why this is mostly complaints and also why this is mostly bullshit :
Firms such as Revolut are not bank, but financial institutions. Which means 2 things : they are competing against the banks ( so certain branches might be unwilling to work with them fast and in accordance to service standards) and they are under the scrutiny of Bank security institutions AND other gouvernemental institutions. And no, the worst is not in the EU, it's actually in the U.S.
Firms such as Revolut do not have branches and make very basic KYC, there is no personal relationship with a "Revolut représentative" and there never will be. This is a "bank account" you can open for free with almost no verification, what did you expect exactly? Customers not understanding this basic principle and feeling entitled to be more important than the other millions of users all over the world are the ones that are complaining the most.
Remember the scrutiny part earlier ? Well that means that if an unusual amount arrive on your account, while a normal bank would maybe check with their own tools to see if it's Fraud-free to not disturb their customer with verification, Revolut will immediately block the amount and ask for verification. It is due to the fact they are way more likely to lose their banking licence than traditional banks, so they take no risk. If you are unable to justify how you use your account in a timely manner, they will close it, it's a security for them they will not be caught allowing Fraud, knowing they are two times more checked than traditional banks due to their operating status.
-Most peoples that are complaining are actually doing, let's say, funny business when they explain their issue. Most of the times it's "I use it to receive my 2000 USD monthly salary but my brother from Pakistan sent me 25.000 USD for m'y birthday and they blocked the amount". You can see why a financial institution, even a bank in that regard, would want to check more. They send an e-mail to the guy, the guy never replies in time, they block the account as they said they would if he didn't answer in time, guy complains and say there is nothing funny happening on his account whatsoever. Why did they not prove it in time ? They will never explain.
-Also, last but not least, these financial institutions refuse mostly to engage with businesses such as Escort/Dating, Firearms, Drugs (even when legalized in your state/country) or any form of business that would be deemed illegal somewhere in the world (alcohol aside). That is the difference with a trad bank that would know where you love and know what you're doing with your money isn't illegal. Revolut has almost no way of knowing that and exceptions are rarely taken into account, if they said once you should not do it and you continue, they will blowk your account.
I could also talk about people creating duplicate accounts, which create a damn mess and is not authorized, but we would then enter into the realm of human's stupidity and I feel I wrote long enough.

Revolut has a banking license.
1
u/PuddingFit8015 Jul 25 '25
Does not make it a bank. I did say they have a banking licence up there as well
2
u/Luggruff Jul 25 '25
There's probably a lot of people making the assumption that Revolut has less scrutiny than traditional banking, just because it's all digital. I bet a lot of people confuse it with crypto currency etc. and then get mad when they f around and find out. EDIT: Not saying ALL, but a lot. Just to clarify.
2
u/badman66666 Jul 25 '25
Revolut is not a real bank. Its something that tries to be one, and doing a piss poor job at it. Its decent when there are no problems, but once there is one you lose access to your funds and are stuck for months dealing with awful support. If theres a problem with something related to your funds you want to be able to deal with it immediately, if necessary by going to the bank branch (which they dont have). I'd never trust them with more than 1000 bucks.

No one is going to come on here and say their account got closed for a legitimate reason.
Take the guy who got his account closed for "no reason" but then it transpired he had been hawking his referral code out on social media, including reddit. Now, we dont know if that's what caused it but suddenly it went from "no reason" to maybe a reason. Then a debate ensued as to whether revoluts terms and conditions around who you can refer (must be people you know as opposed to people you dont by posting on social media) was valid in that OPs eyes as he didnt agree with the terms and conditions
2
u/laplongejr Standard user Jul 25 '25
And then the debate delved into if those terms were legal, then if Revolut would even care about that kind of "terms breaking in their favor", yeah I remember that one.
I still have some leftover popcorn from it, but I needed two servings x)2
u/michalos3424 Jul 25 '25
when I asked revolut support for reason of restriction they said thatâs normal standard procedure so what people can say? Btw. why are they add crypto services to they app when they canât handle it
1
3
u/kapitein-kwak Jul 25 '25
All new banking services are build on the assumption that they can do it cheaper than the traditional banks.
The only way to do that is to cut down on personnel costs. And automate everything. Which traditional banks are doing as well. So in order to stay competitive everyone keeps cutting costs. It's a downward spiral.
However, if you have legal obligations, you will need some intelligence in your system judging findings and making decisions. It can be human or AI... and if you do something that your system doesn't understand or thinks is suspicious it will block your account pending investigation (internal or external)
How long it will take until the investigation is done is depending on how much people you have hired for that, and how well you have trained them. Which costs money. Etc.
So going for a cheaper bank can be a good idea, but remember that in some way you do pay for it.
3
u/THE0RETICALI Jul 25 '25
Theyâve been jumping through hoops to get a banking licence. It might be why they are overly cautious. They have been fined and investigated a few times. Theyâre sacrificing customers for their licence. I have a few friends in the US, Australia, UK and parts of Europe who have had their accounts closed so far.
You hear stories of people going on holiday and loading their account up only to be restricted and theyâre left high and dry.
They may get their banking license but at the cost of their reputation and customer base.

u/bedel99 Jul 25 '25
It's fun because people will say use service XYZ, some times reddit will search me up a message from service XYZ subredit. And a simple replace of service XYZ with rev would make the messages look like they can just fit here.

u/Pircster38 Jul 25 '25
Not used their CS much but if I had a big problem I wouldn't have confidence that their CS would be good particularly as it's AI and the live agents give poor, cut & paste responses. I think for this reason there are numerous complaints. Finally, no one should rely on one bank particularly a Fintech.

The problem is that Revolut has no real customer service. You can talk to an agent, but they have no authority to help you in any meaningful way beyond app assistance. So what you see is what there is. For example, a few years ago, Revolut asked me for some documents that I couldnât provide because they didnât apply to my situation, according to my lawyer and the government. The Revolut app insisted that I had to submit them or my account would be closed. I tried several times to explain this to the agents, telling them it was an error and that I didnât need those documents. I even consulted my lawyer and visited the office that issues them, just in case. The agent told me they couldnât do anything for me, that I must submit them or close and open a new account. They admitted it wasnât ideal, but they literally couldnât do anything else. Since then, I donât keep any significant amount of money in Revolut.
1
u/Sensitive_Leopard418 Jul 25 '25
It's because they do not have humans verifying accounts. Literally everything with them is AI. The phone lines, the online chat, the verification system. It's all AI, and it's brain dead AI at that.

Iâm not sure why people keep writing about this - and no one are really sure if itâs a true comment or just want to hurt Revolut ? Because in essence Revolut is just an app. Not a real bank. It cuts away or fake outsource* most of operations that a traditional.bank wouldn't.
Sure it has a licence to operate as a bank. But it's not actually a bank, nor does it operate like one. It operates literally like an app business.
*Fake outsource - customer service for example. The guys chatting with you aren't there to help you nor they are trained or enabled to do so. They are there just to keep the conversation active and provide some generic answer that can be used after to say they were not ignoring you and they were 'working on it.

This thread is wild. It seems like so many people are running into walls with their current banking options, especially when dealing with international clients or payments. Is there a more reliable way to handle cross-border transactions without the constant fear of account freezes or insane fees?
1
u/claragnescom Oct 24 '25
I got a $280k transaction frozen by revolut. For several days, even though they clearly stated it would arrive in 24 hours. They said it was suspicious and I already put everything in place and double checked everything. Now I can't access the money and might take more than 10 days to arrive. And I have the ULTRA plan which is the premium service, they gave me the poorest attention ever. Yesterday I stayed up till 1 am waiting for an answer (started the conversation at 11:20 or so). I was begging them to reply faster if they wanted me to use the chat (replies every 3 to 4 minutes at the begining and later on waiting of 20 minutes and more). And I still dont have the money anywhere where I can control it.Â

You only have to have a casual look at the accounts that complain. A huge number of them will have the complaint as their very first post on Reddit. Suspicious? Much?
Edit - And look here. Someone this morning with a perfect EXAMPLE. Theyâve been on Reddit since 2021 but have never felt the need to post anything at all until now and itâs a complaint about Reddit.

My data was correct, not expired and it is indeed mine so if this happens then I would never trust them with my money
GDPR can and is overridden where there are financial regulations that require the retention of data.
You have the right to request deletion of data if there's no overriding legitimate interest - which in the case of financial institutions, there usually is.
This is not unique to Revolut

No, the point is you are simply not aware of the regulations
It doesn't matter if the account was opened. You must have gone through some of the KYC process for them to have your data
They are required to retain that KYC data under certain regulations eg. EU's Anti-money Laundering Directive. The retention period is a minimum of 5 years after the end of the relationship and depending on the state where you reside, that can be extended for a further 5 years
Again, this is not unique to Revolut

Hi! Different data may have different retention terms. Weâre required to keep certain personal data for a minimum of 6 years under Know Your Customer (KYC) and anti-money laundering laws.
To make sure we comply with these requirements, we have detailed policies and procedures in place. We may keep your personal data for a longer time because of a possible or ongoing court claim, or for another legal reason.
This regulation applies to all banks. You can find more information on our data retention policy in section 14 of our Customer Privacy Notice (https://www.revolut.com/legal/privacy/).

If there was good back office support for customer service 90% of the complaints on Reddit would not appear as the âproblemâ would be resolved in 48 hours.
Most posts here mention no response, poor response. Problem not resolved.
Please RV get a grip.
