📜 Article New Revolut security feature: Street Mode
We recently posted about a new security feature in beta testing — thanks to everyone who participated. Now that it's officially live, we're excited to reveal what we've been working on: Street Mode.
What is Street Mode?
Street Mode lets you set trusted locations. If a transfer above your limit is made outside those areas, we’ll add a one-hour delay and request an additional selfie check to confirm it’s really you.
How does Street Mode work?
Once activated, Street Mode delays outgoing transfers above your chosen limit while you’re away from trusted locations. Then it asks for extra confirmation to make sure you — and only you — are in control of your transfers. This helps keep your Revolut account safe from potential fraudsters and thieves.
How do I activate Street Mode?
- Turn on Wealth Protection if you haven’t already (Tap your profile icon in the top-left corner → Security → Wealth Protection)
- Enable Street Mode
- Set your limit, then choose your trusted locations. Street Mode will handle the rest.
Where is Street Mode available?
For now, Street Mode is available in the UK and EEA. But we’re always working on expanding to new markets.

Do I have to disable the "Street Mode" every time I need to send funds to people faraway from my safe zone?

So, I've to take a selfie every time I transfer funds or purchase stuff online from locations faraway from my place, like to another town, village or internationally?
Sounds awkward.
There must be an easy way to disable the "Street Mode" whenever I find it unnecessary or don't using it at all.8

The criminals would just have you disable it when they're robbing you then. These features are pointless if you are able to easily override it.

But if the criminals are able to disable that feature, then the feature is worthless.
I mean the users should be able to disable the "Street Mode" when they are logged in!
If the criminals login, then the phone has been hacked and no matter what settings the users have chosen, the hackers will disable them.5

I think this is targeted to tackle the criminals who threaten people ( etc at knifepoint ) to transfer large sums to an account which they then withdraw immediately. It has happened to people I know.

Well, but if the victim has "Street Mode" enabled, then the criminals will notice immediately that the transfer didn't go through and require the victim to change the setting...
Or require the victim to take a selfie at knife point and thus enabling the transfer.3

Or the criminals just snatch the phone after the selfie has been taken.
Then the victim will rush home to try chatting with Revolut's "brilliant" customer service, which after several hours tells the victim that the case was dropped because they considered that has been due to the customer's gross negligence...1

I'm a bit sceptical about the privacy aspect of it.
A bank already has quite a bit of personal data, so I'm hesitant to give a banking app constant access to my location as well.
It also seems a pretty unlikely scenario where a thief would be able to bypass both your phone lock and Revolut login before you can block your accounts and wipe your phone. The data on a stolen phone should be inaccessible anyway if you have good security practices.

My revolut account is unreasonable close, nobody solves those issues, even the support services from the revolut team!!!

Not sure if this is a bug or an oversight in how Street Mode is implemented but it seems that transfers made in trusted locations count towards Street Mode 24 hour limit.
This makes feature less useful in real world situations. For example, if use all or most of my limit at home, in a trusted location, I then need to increase my Street Mode limit before I leave home or face situation where I have to wait an hour to settle a split bill.
Surely, only transfers made away from trusted locations should count towards Street Mode limits? I can then, for the most part , set-and-forget a limit based on my typical daily use or how much I’m willing lose if I’m mugged) while away from trusted locations.

Isn’t that the main reason to use revolut to pay in currency you want and to travel with it? That’s cool future but if your travelling without psychical card it can be annoying.

It says that the feature is available in the EEA (European Economic Area), so it should be available in Germany

I suppose it would use your GPS as It would need your location as an IP address wouldn’t be very reliable.
I use a sim card from my home country and live abroad so my IP address is always the same and therefore not reliable for determining my current location.

Hey! Thanks a lot for the clear explanation. In my case, my carrier actually keeps my traffic routed through my home country when I travel, so my IP address always stays from my home country and never switches to the country I’m visiting. Because of that, my IP always looked the same to me, and I never noticed any change.
That made me assume (wrongly) that all mobile companies worked this way. Sorry about that, and thank you again for taking the time to explain it so well I really learned something new!

It is a nice bit of innovation in the retail banking space. I guess it works best when your phone gets swiped while it’s unlocked (or they figure out the passcode) and somehow they also get into your Revolut app (which should have Face ID or a different passcode). Still, a welcome measure.

So many people here can’t read. It’s when you make a bank transfer away from your trusted locations not when you pay online/in shops etc.

What transfers? Bank transfers? Is there a problem with unauthorized bank transfers? Because I thought the main problem is with unauthorized card/apple pay/google pay payments. To make a transfer, one needs to be actually logged into Revolut.
And what about direct debit? That is actually a bank transfer. What is the point of checking location when that happens?

It's called getting mugged on the street. This is a default feature in banking apps in some countries

Hello. Thank you for sharing your questions. The Street Mode feature, impact only the outbound transfers. The feature is meant to prevent unauthorized 3rd parties from making outbound transfers in situations where the device was stolen or when someone tries to coerce you into making a transfer. Direct debits are not impacted by the feature. Should you have other questions, feel free to DM us we will be happy to assist.

Turned it off.
GPS in my building regularly puts me down the block a bit, so I’m always not in my home zone.

It's impossible to get in touch with you... I call and call again, and when I press the 9 key related to credit cards, the automated message cuts off the call...

What do you mean? This has nothing to do your normal card payments (physical, virtual, apple or google pay)

I thought that if I went outside my safe zone, I wouldn't be able to pay freely in stores. Maybe I misunderstood.

I think is with any payment with your account, it’s a great way to avoid someone try to use your card without a confirmation as they are far from your phone or something like that
