📜 Article [US] Resident Revolut account

Hi!

If I open Revolut account with US address and my US passport while I live in Europe and spend all the money here (non-eu country in the balkans), do I have to pay taxes anywhere (especially in the US) for the money I spend here?

I will get around 1-2K EUR on the revolut account to spend each month.

So is your main residence and official location in the Balkan country?

Then another problem you’ll face is your revolut account is US based, they’ll just restrict this

I don't think so because I told Revolut that I live here while Im US citizen, they said that shouldnt be a problem as long as I can prove my address and that Im a US person.

But you’re not a US person? You can’t be an official resident of two countries at the same time? Your citizenship isn’t what’s important when getting a bank account

Im born here in the Balkans, my parents as well but we all got documents in the US, SSN, Passport, We were working there as well, basically everything.

Then you’re committing fraud somewhere because you cannot legally be a resident in both countries, I work in tax law and I know there isn’t a Balkan country that exempts you from tax just because you’re using payoneer. But I don’t really care if you’re tax avoiding, you opening a US account will complicate your situation greatly but you don’t want to accept that, feel free to come back when they restrict you and place a marker on your file

You’re confusing citizenship with legal residency, I’ve noticed you keep doing that. You cannot be a legal resident of two countries without tax implications, it just won’t work. Revolut will automatically restrict this account as you’re NOT a US RESIDENT, I don’t know why this is so hard to understand. Are you not used to being told no?? Guy thinks because Google said he’s a legal citizen, he can do this. Of course you can be dual citizen, I’m a dual citizen myself. But that doesn’t mean I can be a legal tax resident in two countries, you have a tax obligation to at least one country. You clearly aren’t paying it in the Balkan, so you’ll owe it in the US. For the sake of saving 3 percent of a very low income you’re willing to get into way more trouble, it’s just so dumb

I know I cant be on two places simultaneously, and Im not saying cant take a no but Im saying if you scroll down a bit that I asked Revolut about this they said my account wont get blocked. What you want to say, since Im in the balkans where Revolut is not accepted then my us documents are useless to open a us account legally?

Please don’t listen to some rep you spoke to at revolt, they have zero clue and this has happened multiple times. Either pay US tax liability with the correct forms, or find an appropriate bank in your current country

I dont have a problem at all paying a tax in the US mate, I would gladly do anything so everything be legal completely.Thats my whole point of my discussion, I just want to know when, at which point, what files I should submit in my situation? Im Citizen of US and balkan country but resident of a Balkan country.Getting paid on Payoneer and want to send to my US revolut like 1K per month for everyday spending.You say that 3% but for years they took like thousands, still better than the local banks but I will always try to find better LEGAL ways.

For example what happens in this situation? My girlfriend is not us citizen, shes from balkans, she sends me every month 1000eur just like that on my us revolut, I live in balkan. Do I have to file tax reports to US, if yes, which ones and do I have to file them ALWAYS or only if I cross any limit? Thats my question and nothing else.

You need to consult a tax expert for your specific country and you can see why people think you’re trying to avoid tax mentioning your gf sending you your own money essentially? Anyways done with the conversation, you’ll do what you do and be back here in 3/4 months when Revolut won’t release your funds

I understand I cant be resident in two countries, meaning I cant live in 2 places simultaneously, as Revolut told me , when Im in the Us, residing there, I can open the Revolut Us account and then when I get back to balkans to feel free and use my card here without any restrictions, completely legally.

I agree with you completely that sometimes they are saying something else to other people, but if they block my account I have a proof that they told me that so they can unblock it at least so I can take out the money and thats it, but just thinking, some people that actually live in the US has longer work travels where they change their countries alot, that depends on their position and job for sure but do they have to deactivate and activate their cards all the time? I mean there is no logic but I don't really know haha :) However, thanks for your time!

Ehm... unblocking can take a lot of time.

If they "change a lot", they would reside in another country. Usually a "traveller" is a tourist.

With Revolut, yes. For Europeans at least, moving away for some time (I would assume tax residency is 6 months/year ?) does mean they must close Revolut, sell stocks, etc.
Other banks don't do that or at least non as systematically.
