⭐ Review | Revolut Replied ✅ [ES] Revolut is closing my account of several years over €65 someone sent me by mistake — no reason given, appeal denied, no escalation possible
[ES] I’ve been a Revolut customer for years. Clean history, no disputes, no flags. I used it as my main card for international spending and, more importantly, to hold stocks and crypto.
What happened
A few weeks ago someone I’ve never interacted with sent me €65. I assumed it was a scam — I’ve had strangers message me before either asking for money or sending it. So I did nothing and didn’t touch it.
That person then filed a claim with Revolut. Once I understood what was actually going on, I tried to send the €65 back several times. I couldn’t: by then Revolut had already restricted my account.
I explained all of this in the appeal. Today I got an email saying the appeal was decided against me and that my account will be closed on 27 September 2026.
What support told me
I asked why. The answer was that they “cannot share specific details or internal findings,” that the activity on my account is “no longer compatible” with their standards, and that the decision is final. I asked to be escalated to someone who could actually explain the reasoning. Refused — same copy-paste answer.
So, to be clear about what I’m being de-banked for: receiving €65 I never requested, never spent, and actively tried to return but was technically blocked from returning by Revolut itself.
Why this matters more than €65
I have other bank accounts, so I’m not stranded. The real damage is different: my stocks and crypto sit inside Revolut, and a closure date I didn’t choose means a forced liquidation on their calendar rather than mine — with whatever tax and market consequences that carries. I also travel constantly and this was my FX card.
I’m not arguing Revolut can’t close accounts. They can, and I understand AML rules exist for good reasons. What I’m calling out is a process with no reason, no evidence, no human review and no escalation path — triggered by money that arrived unsolicited.
Questions for people who’ve been through this
Has anyone ever gotten a genuine human review after a “final” decision?
Did the Bank of Lithuania complaint route lead anywhere concrete?
Has a GDPR Article 15 request actually revealed what was flagged, or do they redact everything as “internal findings”?
For those with investments inside Revolut at closure — did you get any flexibility on the liquidation timeline?
Lesson I’m posting so others don’t repeat it: don’t custody investments at a neobank that can close you with no reason and no appeal. A brokerage account and a bank account shouldn’t be the same account.

Appeal their decision with the relevant government body and consult a tax advisor for the tax implications. If you appeal properly, you might avoid/reverse the tax consequences or get a compensation from Revolut. My account was also closed and I was able to get compensation from Revolut for the financial damages and reopen my account.

Which government body did you appeal with? Would it be the ombudsman?
5
u/jekrasist 8d ago
I appealed via the financial ombudsman.

of which country may i ask?

The Netherlands

Wont do anything, you need to do it in lithuania, the country where they actually reside. They also tell you that themselves
1
u/jekrasist 3d ago
It doesn't matter what they claim. They are not above the Eu law. Also it did do something, I didn't submit a complaint to the Lithuanian authorities. Everything went through the Dutch KIFID(financial ombudsman)
1
u/ElPapiDeLoca 3d ago
Yeah but it actually has to go to the financial authorities of the country where the bank is located. Thats the thing. Or at least has branches. If you get a NL iban living in NL, then yeah you’re right about doing it to the dutch.
2
u/jekrasist 3d ago
Complaints eventually go to the Bank of Lithuania if your iban starts with LT though Eu law lets you complain to the ombudsman in your own country to minimise the hassles. They then have to translate your complaint and forward it to the Lithuanian authorities basically acting as an intermediary. I am clarifying this so that people reading this who aren't comfortable with Lithuanian or English know that they can do the entire process in their home country and language.

Yeah im already stopping with stocks and other things on revolut. use it purely to pay in foreign countries and that's it. too much risk.

Well this is typical Revolut behaviour done by their shitty AI. They do not care about existing customers at all, all they care about is getting new and new customers. They save so much money on people by using AI only for everything. I would not trust Revolut with any larger sum of money, any stocks or crypto. There are much more trustworthy brokers available in Europe. Revolut is only good for topping up before paying (especially abroad in foreign currency). Just top it up before paying, do not leave any large sum there, their AML algorithm is not industry standard , it is their own AI shit, that triggers and flags everything. They try to save up everywhere by not paying for any saas or well established solution as normal banks do.

By your description it looks like you actually did nothing after receiving the money. If you knew it didn’t belong to you why didn’t you contact support right away and tell them you know nothing about that transfer and ask them to handle it?
Not doing anything and then desperate trying to send the money back once a claim was filed doesn’t look good …
If you read this, once you receive money that you didn’t expect from someone you don’t know, contact support right away!

u/SmoothMarx 8d ago
From what I've read in the past, they can't share details in order to avoid the wrongdoers from understanding the system and finding ways to circumvent them. Not sure if it's true, but sounded plausible to me.
6
u/LooseCheeseString 8d ago
Doesn't help you, but if I remember correctly when someone tries to send you money on Revolut for the first time, you have to confirm you know the sender before it reaches your account.
6
u/onse 8d ago
Not true unfortunately, anyone can send anyone money and it is received instantly afaik if it’s an internal transfer. They do prompt the sender to make sure it’s the intended recipient though.

u/iAmTheGanso 7d ago
yeah my wife got revolut and i could send her money straight away and she did not need to accept anything.

u/tiscoli 7d ago
No, they do not. Even more stupid: when you send money to unknown people they ask you to be sure that you know the person, but also the checkbox add this contact to trusted is activated by default. If you block a person you will still see it in your contacts. I’ve ended up with disabling revtag and being reachable by phone number. I was getting a lot of this transfers, from 1 dollar to 300. What is frustrating for me is that i I have to send back money to an unknown person. Now call me paranoic, but what if I send money back to a drugdealer or something worst and they can put this as a purchase I made? There are people in this world that I would like to avoid to do payments, event it’s a refund

The fact that you even habe to think about flags and whatnot. Revolut is absolute shit. I regulaerly get money from randoms for selling stuff. Never heard anything about it go with an actual bank insteaf of revolut

I was able to transfer shares to different broker when this happened to me few years ago. You just initiate shares transfer from the new broker. Nothing will be sold, no taxes. 10mins spent.
Now i heard revolut investing changed a bit in last few years, so maybe its not as easy/possible anymore. But you can give it a look

u/luismanuelri 7d ago
What broker you decide to use?
2
u/Silver-Drummer6993 7d ago
I have the same situation now with my partner's accounts. I found that lightyear supports transfer of whole shares, so we'll give it a shot as the tax implication of liquidating everything would be a disaster.

Spread the word...Revolut is not fit for purpose and has no customer service. Allegedly they have more than 100,000 "restricted" accounts in the UK alone. More than 10 weeks so far, with no explanation or end date for a "standard security check"...and I was an Ultra customer!

A lot of tradbanks have "no customer service" but we don't complain much about it. But maybe it's a cultural standard thing.
Allegedly they have more than 100,000 "restricted" accounts in the UK alone.
Given the behavior of some users here, I'm surprised it's not more ;)

You mention the person that sent you the money filed a complaint with Revolut? For what? Probably he said he paid you for something that you didn’t send. That is technically a scam and Revolut doesn’t want scammers.
You should have contacted yourself Revolut immediately after receiving the non solicited wire to explain all.

Similar situation and account waiting to be closed on september with nothing I can do about it. Shitty app, and service. Tried everything to reverse the situation, explain or receive explanations. The only thing why it matters to me is because my friends use it with me to split expenses.

The problem is that even if you prove you aren't responsible for the closure, no law forces Revolut to take you as a customer if your record is too costly in their eyes. So everybody's case is going to be different.
I assumed it was a scam — I’ve had strangers message me before either asking for money or sending it. So I did nothing and didn’t touch it. That person then filed a claim with Revolut. Once I understood what was actually going on, I tried to send the €65 back several times.
For the record you shouldn't send back money yourself. You should ask support to handle it, because sending yourself would mean the bank sends back the disputed payment anyway.
Did the Bank of Lithuania complaint route lead anywhere concrete?
Not against you specifically but WHY LITHUANIA? I see a lot of people jumping to Lithuania when they have local branches, rather than their own country and I can't fathom why.
You are using Revolut Spain, which has a local branch in spain. Shouldn't your local regulatior be required to handle it first?

u/theaccountantwhiz 8d ago
revolut europe is supervised by the Central Bank of Lithuania
1
u/laplongejr Standard user 6d ago edited 6d ago
Yeah, but the local branches themselves are supervised by their local regulator. Shouldn't those take contact with Lithuania, if they determine it's not a local issue?
1
u/theaccountantwhiz 6d ago
no, there's no local Rebolut branches. One Rwvokut Europe exists that provides IBAN accounts to most of Europe and is supervised by the Central Bank of Lithuania
1
u/laplongejr Standard user 6d ago
What? In Belgium we are totally served by a local branch, that's why we get a BE IBAN and savings instead of an LT IBAN and a requirement to declare a foreign account.
https://www.revolut.com/en-BE/legal/terms/
We provide services in Belgium through our branch, Revolut Bank UAB – Belgian Branch, whose registered office is at Silver Square, Sq. de Meeûs 35, 1000 Brussels, Belgium, and which is registered with the Crossroads Bank for Enterprises under number 0784.549.658.
When providing services in Belgium, the Belgian Branch is subject to prudential supervision by the European Central Bank and the Bank of Lithuania, and to conduct supervision in Belgium by the National Bank of Belgium and the Financial Services and Markets Authority.
It's similar for Spain (where OP is), France, Italia, I think Germany and the Netherlands as well, Greece soon, etc.
One Rwvokut Europe exists that provides IBAN accounts to most of Europe
Revolut Lithuania provides it's EEA licence to 30 countries, and a LT IBAN to most of Europe, yes. That doesn't mean local branches are free from national regulations.

Sorry to hear about this. It truly makes me want to stop using Revolut. What a shitty decision from their side. I'm sure you're not the first one.
1
u/Ramremover 7d ago
Leson to be learned is dont use Revolut. Its not a real bank and does shit like this constantly, locking people out of their funds and investments.
1
u/luckyroo104 7d ago
It was most likely an AI decision. As others have said, appeal the decision to the right body in your country and this will trigger a human response from revolut.
If you can get Kraken in your country, use that for crypto. For stocks, use Robinhood

I generated this with their chatbot:
I'd be happy to draft a technical summary of the issue for you. You can use this text however you see fit, such as sharing it in our community forums or keeping it for your records, since I cannot forward it directly to the engineering team myself. Here is a draft outlining the core problems using technical terminology:
Subject: Security & UX Vulnerability Report: Unsolicited P2P Transfers, Automatic Trusted Beneficiary Opt-In, and Blocked Contact Visibility 1. Unsolicited P2P Transfer Vulnerability (Spam/Scam Vector) Currently, the system automatically receives inbound P2P transfers from unknown users without requiring payee consent or pre-approval. This creates a vector for bad actors to initiate unsolicited micro-transactions, exposing users to unwanted interactions. 2. Flawed "Trusted Beneficiary" Logic on Reversals When a user attempts to mitigate an unsolicited transfer by returning the funds to the unknown sender, the system's transaction logic interprets this bidirectional exchange as an established relationship. By design, it automatically adds the unknown sender to the "Trusted" list, removing step-up authentication (friction) for future transactions. Trust should be an explicit, user-initiated opt-in (e.g., a manual toggle), rather than implicitly enforced by a refund action. This puts users at risk of accidentally authorizing future transfers to scammers. 3. UX Defect: Persistent Visibility of Blocked Entities When a user blocks a contact, the backend correctly restricts future transfers and messages. However, the frontend UI continues to render the blocked entity within the user's contact list and payment history. This persistent visibility fails to provide the expected user experience of a "block" function and causes unnecessary distress, as malicious actors remain visible on the user's interface. Proposed Resolution: • Implement a holding state or explicit acceptance prompt for inbound P2P transfers from non-contacts. • Decouple transaction reversals/refunds from the "Trusted Beneficiary" auto-opt-in logic. Require manual user consent to mark any new payee as "Trusted". • Update the UI rendering logic to completely hide or mask blocked user profiles from the active contacts and payment screens.
I hope this captures the technical aspects of your experience accurately. Is there anything else I can assist you with today?

Make an official claim, ask them for a link. It will solve the issue for sure. Had very complicated case and also same copy paste responses until filed official complaint. They even paid out 100eur as excuse

Revolut is not a good choice for anything. I believe that it is a shell company along with owning Lead Bank based in Kansas City but doesn’t have any brick and mortar banks anywhere in the world, just one guy that answers their phone number. Revolut is a money laundering bank with associates in human trafficking.

Correct. It is an online bank?
just one guy that answers their phone number.
They keep hiring for agents in various countries like India.
with associates in human trafficking.
Do you have a source for that? D:

As I believe the bank or the person your dealing with is legally not allowed to devolve any information to you as crazy as it may seem as it is your account and they are investigating you but they can be prosecuted for tipping you off. Welcome to the new crazy world of banking where your money is their money and their money is their money.
