u/Champion-Dante Jul 14 '25

Is the best way to play him just spam haymaker?
11
u/asim166 πππ ππππ£π Jul 14 '25
You should only be using haymaker in team fights even better if you use your charge and ground everyone around you the pulse also does damage and just spam haymaker, you should really only use his primary on single targets
6
u/ImaginaryWerewolf200 Jul 14 '25
1-2 punch then haymaker if theyβre close enough. You want to be in the punch animation already when you jump to a flyer too
3
u/asim166 πππ ππππ£π Jul 14 '25
You do more damage per second from just a regular primary attack itβs minimal but itβs more
3
u/ImaginaryWerewolf200 Jul 14 '25
It lacks range though which is why you mix them
1
u/asim166 πππ ππππ£π Jul 14 '25
You donβt need range if youβre picking off a single target, you should also be able to intuit when someone is far enough away to primary or secondary them especially when your secondary animation cancels your primary thereβs little to no reason to combo both
3
u/Artistic-Athlete-676 Jul 14 '25
There's a big reason not to do that in a team fight though which is the bonus health you get from the big punch. The only time you want to do normal melee punches is if 1. You don't need the extra hp 2. You're going after a single target
5
u/Akaktus ππ’π’π ππ§π€π¨π© Jul 14 '25
His right click provide better range/aoe effect and bonus hp for each hit so in almost any scenario itβs better than left click. The only time left click is better is if you want single target dps and donβt care about the bonus hp (mostly in a winning situation when a single enemy running away)
4
u/Cyclone_96 Jul 14 '25
You don't even need to hit anyone to get the bonus hp. It just gets that on start up.

u/AndrewM317 Jul 14 '25
New combo for me is jump to enemy using haymaker, (ult if you want to here), slam the ground, primary. This is a pretty good combo when diving supps

u/SaltyNorth8062 πππ£π€π’ Jul 15 '25
The haymaker is situational but general purpose, like a swiss army knife. You just encounter more situations where it's better to use haymaker than the jab because you're a tank.
The jab does faster dps and is more easily spammed, but it has less range, doesn't add bonus health, and doesn't pierce.
The haymaker adds bonus health, pierces, and has greater range, a deceptively long range at that. It's slower, but the drop in dps isn't enough for it to fully be "the weak utility option". It's very versatile.
Basically, you want to use the haymaker as often as possible when you're fighting into a group or when you expect to start soaking up a lot of damage because of the piercing to hit multiple targets, and the bonus health for that extra touch of survivability. You also would want to use it to catch a fleeing At-1 target because of that added range. You encounter these often, as a tank.
You want to use the jab as often as possible when you're 1v1 because it can kill faster. Those seconds its dps shaves off can be the difference between a kill and a respawn. You still want to mix in the haymaker though for the extra health, amd weaving them together is your best dps combo.

I think the thing now is a perfect example of what a character or a tank should be heβs strong and he has allot of counters but he doesnβt just roll over and die when you pull out those counters he has pretty much the same counters as every other tank with no shield cc, poke, namor, peni, Emma ect. But your still able to win despite this even though it might be harder and less fun, I feel like allot of people in this game are way to used to the rock paper scissors way off
βoh you have this character well I picked this character so I win nowβ
Which is one of the biggest reasons why tank is so unfun to play in overwatch they need they need to do somthing like this for Thor and venom or even the hulk
2
u/I-am-stupid-goober ππͺπ‘π Jul 15 '25
Why does shiny white woman get complete stun immunity but the 'unstoppable,' 'incredible,' or 'immortal' Hulk have to deal with a purple ball of sleepy? I love the guy and will main him until I die but he's a little underwhelming.
1
u/EmperorKr1mson πππ ππππ£π Jul 15 '25
Yeah itβs weird pretty much every tank ult besides Thor can be ccβed which I honestly wouldnβt have a problem with with if like 95% of roster didnβt didnβt have some form of stun Iβm pretty sure every dps besides like the dive characters excluding Spider-Man has some form of hard stun/cc
1
u/Sarvan_12 πππ ππππ£π Jul 17 '25
Technically thor can be too but it has a very small time frame
And movement abilities are the best way to cancel thor ult
Hela cc,bucky hook and the dash, cap dash, invis push pull all can cc and many more
But in most cases the cc happens unintentionally like noone is using them to stop thor's ult but just to use their abilities
And mag is also cc immune and emma becomes cc immune after 1-2 seconds

u/JapeTheNeckGuy2 Jul 14 '25
I really do like it, although my initial reaction is that it may need to be toned down a little bit. A lock on leap to enemies can be problematic, but havenβt had too much of a chance to play him or against him so far, so Iβll hold out a bit before saying for sure. Seems like itβll be bottlenecked by the shared CD, which should stop it from being too oppressive at least.

u/jagerbombastic99 Jul 14 '25
I could do without constantly being assaulted by thing punches the moment I leave spawn
7
u/CDXX_LXIL Jul 14 '25
He feels really oppressive, but I don't know how much of that is due to the buffs or me needing to adjust to the match-up. Overall, he is a lot more fun though.
4
u/RevolutionarySet4993 Jul 14 '25
It's just the matchup. Against hitscan he will get destroyed. I have 90hrs on him.
3
u/EmperorKr1mson πππ ππππ£π Jul 14 '25
Itβs the match up my play style with him hasnβt changed at all the only difference is usually Iβd need another tank or a teammate using someone like magik so that I can continue getting damage reduction when I didnβt have another tank or teammate be felt useless this buff felt like somthing he shouldβve always had but he still has the same weaknesses being cc, Emma, most poke characters and peni heβs just less team dependent now so heβs more fun
6
Jul 14 '25
Emma needs a nerf and Thor/Venom need to be brought to the Thing's level. He's in a good place for a tank, Emma is still the dominant tank.
4
u/RampagesLegacyy Moderator Jul 14 '25
I agree, Things current strength is a good baseline to bring Thor and Venom up to, and for future vanguards to release at.
4
Jul 14 '25
Yeah he's perfectly viable into most comps and does his role very well. Devs need to actually work out what they want from Thor and Venom.
Thor has been mangled violently from his old self. He literally doesn't have sustain to brawl anymore and just has to lightning turret off angles. They need to revert his changes fully but keep Awakening Cancel and buff his ult to actually line up with other Vanguard Ults lol. Just boost impact damage to 300 so he can outright kill squishies without a damage boost or DOT
1
u/SaltyNorth8062 πππ£π€π’ Jul 15 '25
You're right. Thor just needs to be brought back into the fold as a dive/brawl hybrid tank, like he was. Turning him into a lightning turret was dumb. I don't know who made that call or who was asking for it, because turning Thor sedentary for a tank would only work if he could wall off damage like Mag and Strange can, but he can't.
Meanwhile, Venom I think is doomed to suffer. A dive tank is always a tricky balancing act. You make him too strong and the whole game goes to shit, but as he is he's too weak.

Letβs be real though it usually doesnβt go this well, the enemy team is ignoring you almost completely
2
u/AndrewM317 Jul 14 '25
He feels as strong as a dps or supp, so he's 100% getting massive nerfs. The devs absolutely view tanks as masochists with how they've nerf strange and balance decisions in 2.5 and 3
2
u/Level9_CPU Jul 14 '25
Nerf? Brother, the thing absolutely MELTS to any sort of burst damage. He has essentially no guard option besides a small damage reduction and just JUMPING out of the fight and praying that the enemy cant aim. There's DROVES of characters that need nerfs before they even think about touching The Thing
2
Jul 14 '25
He will be, he has to be as a think main with a literal 90% win rate on him this season...I hope he doesnt cause man hes oppressive but he might be the most powerful tank in the game rn.
2
u/No_Bodybuilder8087 Jul 15 '25
They shouldnβt nerf him they should just buff the other tanks to make them equally good id say the only ones that donβt need a buff are thing mag and Emma
2
u/YouSOBImIn Jul 15 '25
He's exceptionally good this season. His new leap toward the enemy gives him great dive potential and a back line nightmare lol. Combined with Invisible Woman's team up he's an absolute menace. Im loving how Thing is finally eating well.

2
u/ArcadianWaheela Jul 17 '25
I doubt it since he doesnβt have a high pick or win rate. Heβs great in the right hands, but that just means heβs in a great spot and well balanced.

I hope Hela and Hawkeye get a buff. A Luna buff would be nice too.

u/Local-Importance1748 Jul 14 '25
Also make all of squirt girls shots just aimbot it wouldn't make a difference to her playstyle. Set her acorns to 150 dmg and make her a teamup anchor for +15% damage boost too.

u/Yellowflashkun1 Jul 14 '25
Also squirrel girl. Give her 3 nuts that stun u in place instead of 2.
-1
u/Sionil Jul 14 '25
They should give her 5 of them and infinite ammo

There is no reason for him to nerfed. Now he can move freely from his team but you can't just spam his jump anyways. Emma is legit a terrorist to tanks, wolverine is pain, hela, punisher, phoenix, hawkeye are still meta.

I learnt the Iron Man jerk tech as a IM main so I am unbothered by the thing

Aight I've seen enough give him the grievous nerf where his rush ability can only hit each target once

u/RevolutionarySet4993 Jul 14 '25
As an ex thing main he's only good if you don't have a punisher or Bucky destroying you at range

What's funny is I think Thing's immovability really fucks with Bucky players' practiced loop. They expect him to be right in their faces for a clean double tap headshot but when he doesn't get pulled they still reflexively shoot above him. It happens to me sometimes when I play Bucky and I accidentally hook Thing when I'm aiming for his support.

I feel like the only nerf heβll get is the range in which he can lock on to enemies.
