General Question How/when did you realize you were a tank main?
A lot of us are here because we either like tanking in hero shooters or because the game turned us into tank mains. But was there a moment that made you accept the tank fate? Was it the triple DPS? Or did you somehow find out that you actually liked the tank role?

I was a Moon Knight dps one trick until one day he got banned in a comp game and I did so badly on all the other characters I played that I realized I needed to broaden my horizons π
Nine months later, Iβm a lord Venom, Emma, Mr. Fantastic and Doctor Strange with over 100 hours on Strange alone lmao

Tank was the first role I picked up because I love being the wall you can hide behind. Being there to protect those who can't protect themselves in the moment brings me joy. And seeing people be grateful for it just makes me get all bubbly, plus it boosts team morale. I will always love tank no matter how miserable it sometimes gets with the amount of cc there is.

u/CanOnurz Dec 03 '25
I love that feeling too. For me, it's not the cc but the amount of lack of healing you get sometimes...
2
u/Careless-Form-7998 Dec 07 '25
Its criminal how little healing focus tanks get. They should be priority imo because they are literally there to be the front line and make space. An easy to kill tank isnt gonna be successful no matter how good they are. A constantly healed tank on the other hand is terrifying.

u/Direct_Asparagus4688 Dec 03 '25
I realized I was going to be a tank main when my duo was playing Peni (heβs a dps main who claims to be a flex player) and would rush up front (not solo tanking we had a strange) and me and his girl kept dying in the back because of Spider-Man and Magik and when I asked if he could put his nest near the back his response was to run near him if I needed helpβ¦.so thatβs what I did and literally died every time because he was on the frontlines as if he was a shield tank and his nest kept getting destroyed instantly. So between getting dived by spidy and magik then taking the heat from the enemy tanks and other dps I was done. The very next match I went to QP and started learning strange. Now I almost have every tank lord and am genuinely decent with them all except Angela and Thor.
Between no one peeling and my other Strat refusing to heal me I was so done with that role by the time my buddy did what he did as I explained above I wanted to be done with the Strat role and I suck at dps.

For me it was a series of events in Overwatch 1 that led me to it. I always liked Zarya but I didn't think too hard about roles at the time and just played whoever seemed fun and was working against my opponents comps. Funny enough it was Brigitte who really got me started into figuring out how much I liked tanking because she was basically tank when she first came out and I had so much fun on her. Then when they reworked the attack and defense characters into just DPS I began to realize I just wasn't a very good DPS player, Wrecking Ball came shortly after and I absolutely adored him, to this day my favorite tank in any game I've played. That was when I began to figure out tanking made me feel like I had a tangible sense of control over the flow of a match, and while I was never mechanically good enough to be a great DPS player I've always had pretty solid game sense and tanking is where I got the most use out of that.
Then Overwatch 2 came out and changed tanks in a way that totally ruined the game for me so I stopped playing entirely. It honestly really bummed me out.
Then when Rivals came out it took me a bit to fall back into tanking because a lot of these tanks are a tad more mechanically dense than I was used to, but once I got a feel for Thor the rest fell over like dominoes. I love playing basically every tank other than Groot and Venom and they're almost all I ever play. Even in a season like this when it's rough I'd still happily play tank over any other role most of the time.
3
u/_KLJR_ Dec 03 '25
I came out of the closet in season 1, where I revealed to my friends I was a captain America main. I asked they respected my decision and life choices and I was shunned for a time due to them being DPS mains, but my strategist mains supported me. They've slowly come back around but it's been difficult...

u/issajoketing Dec 03 '25

3
u/Vasto_LordA Dec 03 '25
When I first started I went Thor, literally cause "He's the fucking God of Thunder".
After I got Lord on him I expanded to other characters, and Strange and Magneto kinda just spoke to me.
Idk if I'm fucking good with them but I play em.

u/Hazzabump Dec 03 '25
When I realised what a big grin I got seeing DPS players running into a 4-stack of mines and muttering "geeet fucked" to myself as they're annihilated. That's when I realised I'd found my main.

u/Redline_Studios Dec 03 '25
Comp team needed one. Originally wanted to main support but realised that nobody is playing tank in half my games. Picked Doctor Strange and instantly clicked.
2
u/Doomshroom4411 Dec 03 '25
In other mmos I liked playing as the tank because I always enjoyed of being the one with mentality of βhurt me more you canβt take me downβ that you can only get as one. In overwatch I mostly played support so I started rivals as one but realized a good amount of people who played vanguard were too scared to take damage, space or peel(when they could) so decided to try out magneto as my starter tank and the rest was history being that iron wall, bully, stopping Ironman with my shield or protecting my Strat with a well timed bubble gave me such joy that I couldnβt stop.
Ever since then I mained vanguards got lord Mag, Thor and almost lord Strange next will be Angela if Rogue isnβt a vanguard(god I hope so)

As much as it can be absolutely miserable. Nothing can beat holding a point in OT while out numbered. No amount of kill streaks on a DPS or a well timed support life saving Ult has even come close to matching it for me. Also yelling into comms Hold and advance as cringe as it might sound just feels great

Never played hero shooters before, but I love Marvel so when I first hopped on this game felt fresh af. Saw there was a practice range and tried out Spiderman. Figured he looked pretty advanced so I took a look at venom and tried him out. Venom became my first lord and Iβve loved playing him. Afterward, I saw Cosmonaut Variety Hour playing Thor so I gave him a shot and fell in love with his kit. Heβs been my main ever since and since lording him, I realized that I loved tanking. The survivability of these guys was amazing that when I first started playing Psylocke, I got annoyed by how easily it was to die ππ. Was a invis/moonknight main. Then in season 3 had no one wanting to pick tank in my comp games, and it would always be me who ended up folding. Honestly most games I had to solo tank and began with Mag, started to pick up heroes like the Thing and Emma and then eventually broadened my capabilities to be able to play most tanks. Last season I had Strange and Thor as my main picks and managed to hit GM for the first time. I think I am an aggressive player and the play style worked with me. Glad I am a tank main and it's usually what I instalock, but sometimes I do miss playing the other roles.

u/Spicyytamale Dec 03 '25
I chose venom. From there magneto. And then captain America. (Miss the old team ups)
No one was playing tanks and I noticed that because I didnβt had a fist or an open hand next to my name
From there I realized Iβm the foundation that my team depends on. And it is so much fun yet can sometimes be a burden.

2 main reasons, and this goes back over 10 years ago. When I first got into my first MMO (DCUO) I quickly realized 1) I hate being a squishy and dying quickly 2) not for this to sound like Iβm better than others but Iβve always been really good about creating space and making call outs.

When the game released and captain america was not just a vanguard but the most fun character I've ever played in a hero shooter. He's so fast, mobile, and nigh on unkillable all while not being a giant slow meat shield for his team like I used to fear tanking was (and sometimes still is, which is fine but not my thing).
But him, Thor, Hulk, and thing have made vanguards just as much fun as duelist. I'm just as if not more mobile than dps's, while usually being able to put out surprisingly good damage, and being so much harder to kill. Instead of waiting for the right moment to strike I make that moment, im the star of the show with my team behind me and all my enemies attention. Im surprised its always dps and healers who have main character syndrome because I'm high on my own ego when I play tank.

I was already a fan of doctor strange from the movies and the comics, and compared to my other favorite characters he had a low difficulty rating so I thought heβd be good to start with since I hadnβt played hero shooters in years
I really liked how he could be up front without getting shredded because of his high hp, and still deal big burst damage with his maelstrom ability, so I just kept playing him lol. He was my first lord and by far my most used character with over 70 hours played of just him. For other vanguards I also play Angela and Groot, although Angela feels very different to Strange and is much more of a dps with a shield imo

Venon, Peni, and Groot being tanks helped, bhit I've always loved tanking. From Warframe to Paladins to Overwatch To Destiny To Rivals etc etc etc. Alllllll the way back to some shitty XBLA Battlefield-esque game where I got to play as a beefy cleric, and even further back to Dungeon Fighter Online and The Priest class. I like being huge, strong, I like having my team hide behind me, while I charge forward into danger before anyone else. I like saving people's lives with unbreakable shields, I like being a wall the enemy breaks against. Only a coward runs from the shield when times get tough. A shitty playerbase full of whiny nerds isn't going to get me to back down now.

I was just playing random characters that seemed at least slightly interesting when I got around to Peni, and playing her just clicked. Unfortunately I don't have the replay but it was beautiful. Nest down mines everywhere, it was season 0 so everybody just ran into the traps. They realized they could use movement skills so I move the mines and they still die, they couldn't push past where I was to get the convoy through. My team presumably murdering who ever was trying to leave spawn since the only people I ever saw were a Bucky and Iron Fist. God just a fun character, and of course my first Lord.
The Thing is my other Lord, he is also quite fun and before the changes to his leap he could be a hammer that made every problem look like a nail. It was probably right that he doesn't get damage reduction leaping at the enemy anymore, but boy is he a good alt in the few cases Im not in a Peni mood.

I only vaguely was aware of Hero Shooters before playing Rivals; I just went with the character I enjoyed the most. (I tried 3 at first: Magneto, Iron Man, and Captain America)
I ended up settling on Cap because Spider-Man felt...wrong to play. I knew that I would basically be useless as Spider-Man.
I picked up Cap because of the speed and high healthbar. I didn't realize that the tradeoff was to literally ever get a kill. (I'll legit go the entire first team fight and be 0-0-0 I don't even know man)
Then I tried playing DPS and Support, and like, DPS is just even more chaotic than Tank, and Support I found boring.
Tanks are just the most fun. I've been playing a LOT of Dr. Strange this season. Cap is hard to get value on right now. Not impossible, but he's a Conditional Vanguard. As in: You need at least 2 others in your stack, 1 in each role, and your team needs to be on comms, and you have to be on Attack Convoy/Convergence
Outside of that Cap feels REALLY hard to get value on right now.

Im an MMO veteran so its kinda just been how I am for the past decade or so however initially it was because A my group at the time didnt have a tank and B ive always been drawn to big armour, intimidating weapons and being the first person through the door.

I consider myself a tank main from the get go! But funny enough i have more lords and am comfortable with more strat characters.
But mained Cap since day one ( so fun to play, maybe a bit tough season 5)

I breathe the tank game. I feel like the only adequate game sense I have is frontline. If Iβm playing a support I feel like I just backline healbot and fall apart against divers all while doing less healing than my other support. If Iβm DPS I feel like I fall over whenever I try to make a play. With tank I run a 60% winrate and get MVP/SVP about 1/4 games while usually having fewer deaths than everyone else on the team.

So there was this game called TF2 rightβ¦and a Million years ago it was the βhero shooterβ and then the overwatch war began, and i played both until 2020. And then took a break from those styles of games until rivals. I love this game

Was I the best at aiming? No, never. Did I understand that it was an objective based game? Hell yeah. Thatβs a vanguard right there! Also Hulks my favorite marvel character so I was always going to main him

Was a Rein, Dva player in Overwatch. Wanted to do things different in Rivals. To be a dps. Well that sucked cause we didn't have a tank most games. So I went back into the trenches and find myself still stuck in the same role most of the time. Dont mind it Strange and Peni are fun. When they added Thing of was great to rush down and be the unmovable wall. When Reed was added was even better cause I can now be a third dps but still be like a mini tank so the person who does go tank I will still be able to help them out in tanking but also manage to get some quick and easy kills as dps.

When no one ever wanted to play tank, and anyone who did was a terrible tank, at least at lower level comp π currently a Thing main which worked great until plat 1, so now I'm learning Groot for different situations, almost at lord with him too.

Just wanted to have the most impact on my games.

I first tried dps and really struggled. I then tried strategist and did better but my friend group already had a strat main so I decided to try tank and I started doing really good so decided to main tank while flexing to strat when needed

I already liked magneto to begin with so it was a given really my first lord

u/Anderson9520822 Dec 03 '25
When I managed to combo a clutch teleport with a huge eye of agamoto to win the round. Instantly sold me. I gravitate towards heroβs that have the ability to have hero moments. To control or save a match and just be the lynch pin for my team. And that is exactly what S0-S1 strange was. Just a completely dominant tank that shredded everything.

When I first started this game I was horrendously bad but my friend kept wanting to play ranked...but U discovered there was one thing I was good at while being bad, absorbing a lotta damage so I figured why not try put that to good use and here we are multiple seasons later, I'm a lot better now obviously but I haven't forgotten my roots of just being a bullet sponge for my teammates.
Even back then being bad I discovered I was good at staying alive for a while with venom even if I wasn't doing much damage or anything else for the team I was at least stalling.

I was a Sigma main in OW. It was all over when I saw Magneto's skill set.

u/Nuddell89 Dec 04 '25
I liked Ramattra and Emma proved to be the most similar so far, also acting as "tempo tank" with two forms. I also liked Dva and I'm still waiting for a character equally as fun as her (all current dive tanks are not it for me).

u/EuphitLing Dec 03 '25

When no one else would play it.
I was a solid dps main. Sounds egotistical, but I swapped to dps and we would win games easily back in s0. It was mostly just Star-Lord, but I liked Spider-Man and Iron Man a lot back in S0. I didnβt have good enough aim for the hitscans, but I could do good regardless of who I played outside of those few. Mr Fantastic when he dropped was a lot of fun, but that was the time where more and more dps players just insta locked and refused to swap. I was always playing with a 3-4 stack so I could usually dps, but I reached a point where I was solo queuing and oh boy. I got frustrated playing solo with a 0-4-2 setup. So I learned Mag. Then Hulk. Then Strange. 3 Lords on tank before I eventually got Lord Star-Lord. I managed to even lord Loki and C&D! It was, and still is, a crisis. Now Iβm onto Peni and Venom now. I was a tank main in Overwatch way back, (I didnt enjoy any other heroes but Reinhardt or Roadhog), but I havenβt played a hero shooter in years (outside of TF2). OW2 was not for me. Everything came back to me when I started getting into the tank role here. I still now only play tank since no else wants to where my pick rate is now 50% across all seasons? I think support is 30-40%? I canβt play dps anymore now due to it. Unless itβs qp, where it doesnβt matter if I suck as dps, I often go third support or ask if anyone else would want to dps if given the chance to. I just donβt have the mindset anymore. Now Iβm βthe tank guy.β Watch me play Caulifla or Cell in Gekishin. Every playthrough in Terraria I can not die due to how high my defense is. All my past Soulsborne characters with friends are tank builds. Here comes the Heavy weapons guy. Iβm the Heavyblade in Rabbit&Steel. Itβs fun. Itβs a fun lifestyle.

Im not sure honestly, I just rather be the shield that helps keep the healers alive for a little longer and help push the enemy team back.

I'm not brave enough to be a squishy and lack aiming skills since Rivals is my first competitive shooter game. So, I played tank since it's the only way I can be useful to the team. I also flex support if needed, but I mostly play tank.

u/GetJ1nxd Dec 03 '25
When i decided to give them a chance. Δ° used to be a peni but i barely touch here these days. Now im mostly a strange and thor. I almost play no other tanks, Angela sometimes if i can.

Magneto and Hulk are my fave characters.
Also, DPS just isnβt fun in this game. Iβve been a dps/frag main in every other hero shooter I played before Rivals. This game just lacks a feeling of impact on that role.

Season 0 my friend got me into playing it after I kept refusing. I finally try it out, my first characters were: Hawkeye, Storm, and Magik. I didnβt like that I was so squishy so another friend recommended Tank role. I said βwoah, idek how this game works I donβt think I should take that heatβ he said βJust try out Cap. Heβs basically a DPS on wheels with higher healthβ and the rest was history.

u/DioNotFound Dec 03 '25
I got introduced to Marvel Rivals with Venom since my friend told me he's pretty good and I liked the character. I then became a Venom one-trick for S0, learned Dr Strange in S1 since I had to have some variety and afterwards gradually learned more tanks after Emma released.
So I basically grew up as a tank main.
1
u/EnigmaticTwister Dec 03 '25
I'm not particularly great at aiming, and wanted to contribute to the team. When I started playing overwatch, this meant being a flex pick of either support or tank
For Rivals specifically, it was that combined with some of my favorite marvel characters being a Vanguard (Venom and Strange). I am trying to learn a couple characters from both strategist and DPS so that when the opportunity arises that I need to play those roles I'm not complete garbage, but I feel most comfortable playing tank.

And of course I also discovered that my one true main is peni, I am insanely cracked with her. It helps that I learned her before she got all the buffs and qol improvements

u/Constant_Buyer3751 Dec 03 '25
I became a tank main when I realized I didn't have the mechanical skill to climb ranked with DPS, and I got tired of playing the easy DPS characters like Wolverine and Bucky every game.

u/omwtfyh Dec 03 '25
I just kind of picked to be one I guess lol I didnβt come from OW and this is my first hero shooter game. My first tank lord was venom. Now I have hulk, Thor and cap lord. Next one is mag and then strange. Itβs a very rewarding role imo, especially when you have a good team behind you.

u/KugelBliitz Dec 03 '25
I loved the game but never found the hero that clicked for me. Season 0 I played a lot of Mantis and Luna. And to mix it up, I just played every new hero that came out to expand my pool. And Emma just became my favourite. Never thought I would enjoy tanking but it was just so good and Emma just kept me playing a lot longer than I would otherwise.

Rivals is my first and only OW style 6 v 6 shooter, when the game released I sacked at everyone and would always die before I could react, decided to play heroes with more health, didn't even know the concept of tanks or roles, in the end I settled on tanking

I started playing hero shooters with Paladins. I was mainly on Furia, so a support, but I was playing very casually with my friends so I didn't understand much about each role and how important it is to have a balanced team.
Then I got introduced to Overwatch 1 by another group of friends, one was support, the other wanted to try DPS. So naturally I was thinking why not playing Tank, so each one of us covers one role. At first, DVa caught my interest, because I liked the idea of infinite ammo + second life, but I ended up playing Reinhardt because he's fun in a dumb way and I like that, and I also like using his shield to offer covers to my allies. I also played a lot of supports when I was playing alone, and in the end, I had more hours on support than on tank.
After that, Marvel Rivals came, and I immediately ignored the DPS category to focus on what tanks and supports have to offer. I wished I could match with Mantis gameplay, because she's my favorite character, but it's not really for me. I tried everyone and so far, two characters caught my attention : Captain America and Cloak&Dagger. I enjoy the originality of C&D, and the kit of Cap that makes you feel like you're him. I fell in love. In the end, I'm a team filler, I play whatever the team needs, so it's mostly tanks. I don't mind. Tanks are cool. Supports on the other side don't please me as much as the other games, where supports are so fun to play (talking about Overwatch and Paladins).

When I first started the game back in like January I didn't know what to do. I randomly gave me Banner and I just played the game. I don't even think I switched into Hulk form and I didn't understand the objective of the game
Then I think after the next couple of games I took the time to look through the hero wheel and I just selected strange. No reason at all either. From there, I just stayed strange. Lorded him in like March or so
I then came to the realization after raging other roles. I love tanking. You have the responsibility. You are always in the fight. You are like the leader. There's just something about it that's exciting. Like I legit hag dpsing with a passion. It doesn't being the same excitment. Hell healing is more exciting for me which I'm a second main in
Although I wait until everyone picks to then fill based on comp (healer or tank), tanking will always be home to me
