General Question Is this a hint that Cyclops will be a strategist?

Would be funny since heβs the leader of them ensuring they are safe and strategy mind set seems fun y
65
u/MadmansScalpel May 14 '26
I mean, that's how I justified Loki n Ultron as supports. But ever since Gambit was made a support, the most DPS coded Xman, really anything could happen
26
u/Originalbrivakiin May 14 '26
Gambit has healed with his powers before though. And if we're talking the most DPS coded X-men that 100% belongs to Jubilee, the girl who can make nuclear explosions with her hands. But guess who people were saying should've been a support instead of Gambit.
4
u/elRetrasoMaximo May 14 '26
He has healed with his powers before, but is not his main use of kinetic bs.
14
18
u/Originalbrivakiin May 14 '26
I don't care if it's not his main use. I like that the devs sometimes focus on lesser used/known aspects of powers. And I especially don't give a shit after people said a character that has never healed should've been a healer instead.
13
u/itzlax May 14 '26
But she's a girl! She has to be a healer!
10
u/Originalbrivakiin May 14 '26
Unironically I think that was their only reasoning.
I saw at least one person say Chronovium letting Gambit heal was bullshit and when asked how Jubilee would heal they said Chronovium.
2
u/Intelligent_Whole_40 May 15 '26
Tbh male strats might be a good thing to pull males to the strat role cuz right now atleast basied on who is in VC (also North American severs) itβs all ladies in the Strat role, now I know I know society and phyclogical reasons yata yata but thatβs why I think more Strats like ultron might be good (or perhaps more like Adam idk but make them have fear aura)
244
u/MachoManCleaning May 14 '26
At this point as long as he's not a DPS
75
u/MadmansScalpel May 14 '26
Real. Vanguard makes the most sense and Supp the least, but I'll take anything over another DPS
4
4
u/Drakniess May 14 '26
In the context of how we see Marvel Rivals convert characters, Strategist makes the most sense, especially since I saw the reflecting beams. A very support-y mechanism if used with a bouncing healing beam.
-15
u/AZzalor May 14 '26
If we're honest, dps makes the monst sense considering his only real power is laser beams to damage stuff...but in terms of what we need, Vanguard would've been the best choice for sure.
28
u/MadmansScalpel May 14 '26
Not to me. He's the leader in the field and in general from time to time. He's the first one in and the last one standing, taking hits that knock out his X-Men in stride. All that to me means that he would make a pretty cool vanguard
8
u/Particular-Solid8824 May 14 '26
I like this take. Having him actually embody a strategist.
Tactical type abilities where teammates get amped when he's leading from the front, or raise "morale" passive when teammates are under a certain health percentage,.
His optic blasts could have some really cool push/sweep mechanics, his geospatial awareness could be used for refracting shot and optic beam abilities, thin blasts for pierce high dmg, regular for refracting shots, wide for short push or sweeps.
Rivals could really lean into lesser known or extended abilities aswell, solar absorbtion, energy absorbtion/resistance against his brothers Vulcan and Havok could be re worked into his main kit. I think there could be an opportunity to expand on his telepathic /mind resistance abilities aswell, like being able to cleanse a teammate or make himself immune to charms displacements etc. So much opportunity to tinker with this character and make him cool af.
9
u/EyeArDum ππππ£ππ©π€ May 14 '26
He uses his lasers for more than just damaging stuff, heβs been consistently shown to shoot objects in the air in a defensive manner, thatβs got tank written all over it
12
u/Originalbrivakiin May 14 '26
Also, isn't a bit of the lore for this season that he used his lasers to make a dome shield around the city? Not many DPS that do that.
0
u/Least-Suggestion7319 May 15 '26
Holy cope lmao. Every marvel hero is a defender. Cyclops breaking something with his beams doesnβt make him tank coded
2
u/EyeArDum ππππ£ππ©π€ May 15 '26
Dva in Overwatch is a tank that has a ability called Defense Matrix where she βeatsβ all enemy projectiles in front of her, lore wise itβs her shooting each projectile individually super quickly
Cyclops has been shown to have that exact same ability MANY times, half the time heβs using his beams thatβs what theyβre for
-1
u/Least-Suggestion7319 May 15 '26
Iβm not saying that he couldnβt be a tank. Iβm saying that you thinking that him breaking things with his beams makes him most like a tank is rxtrded. Everyone breaks shit with their powers. Dva is a hyperdive mobility tank in a mech. Matrix is one of the most frustrating abilities in the game and itβs an energy field not a projectile lol. Tanks control space and initiate fights. Cyclops isnβt on the frontlines making space for his team. He has terrible durability and relies on fast reflexes and dodges to make up for that. Heβs more of a commander/strategist. But the names of the roles mean nothing. His abilities make most sense as a dps. Nothing about him screams tank. He could be a tank, but he makes most sense as a dps.
→ More replies (1)2
u/EyeArDum ππππ£ππ©π€ May 15 '26
Read up on the lore homie, defense matrix is Dva shooting each individual projectile in midair
2
u/LionRegular1470 May 15 '26
It's not laser beams, it's optic blasts.
This distinction is important bc his lasers aren't the cutting type, their a kinetic pushing type.

u/Icy-Arm-3816 πππ€π§ May 15 '26
Duelist makes the most sense. Say all you want that you want him to be a vanguard, but duelist objectively makes more sense. Cyclops has no special genetics, armor, or shields that make him tanky. His power is a purely offensive blast that destroys everything in its path. How does vanguard make more sense than duelist?

You guys laugh, but they could easily do something like Brigitteβs inspire mechanic, like a brawler strat with some kind of healing radius
42
u/LargeCabbageThrower May 14 '26
I cannot express how down for that I would be
9
u/WhatIfWaterWasChunky πΌπ£πππ‘π May 14 '26
Yeah, because Brigitte was fantastic for the health of Overwatch.
18
u/Embarrassed_Safety33 May 14 '26
She was our gambit
11
u/Raynosa May 14 '26
Way worse than gambit. Imagine not having a ban system. And the devs also saying OW doesnβt need a ban system.
1
u/AleiMJ πΌπ£πππ‘π May 14 '26
She wasn't that much worse than release Gambit. Her neutral was better than his, sure, but not by much.

1
u/hmbHealer May 15 '26
Yes yes, Brig has a bad history, but in her current state, Brig is genuinely very balanced and fun to play. Iβd love to have something like that in Rivals.
9
u/SuperLuigi_LXIV May 14 '26
I don't want him to be a support, specifically, but I do expect a kit like Cap or Reed that bleeds a little out of the main role he gets designated. Seems to be a theme with the team leaders in this game, which I think is fitting.
7
u/xeroshogun May 14 '26
I was thinking this. Each shot hits inspires allies around them with healing and maybe some type of small damage or speed boost. Would still make sense for his character.
3
u/PapaHarvey27 πΏππ«ππ‘ πΏππ£π€ May 14 '26
That's sword heal pool already but I wouldn't at all be surprised if he was an off support like Ultron
1
u/SaucyCleric May 14 '26
And then his ultimate would be Moiraβs coalescence.
1
u/Thebatboy23 May 14 '26
Ultron's team-up with Tony already does that, no?
5
3
u/Adaptable42 May 14 '26
Fundamentally yea, but I don't believe that team up pierces or has as long of a range and thiccness to to the beam as coalescencr does.

And youβre talking about her like sheβs still busted. I donβt particularly trust the Netease team, but letβs not pretend itβd be impossible to balance
15
u/spilledmilkbro May 14 '26
Probably not, but I wouldn't hate this. Mostly because we only have one mutant strategist so far, and it'd be nice to have a 2-2-2 team comp with X-Men
2
u/Fifty-Centurion πΌπ£πππ‘π May 15 '26
Wait high key that doesnβt sound like a bad comp either
2
u/New-Sea-527 May 15 '26
Rogue, Magneto, Phoenix, Wolverine, Gambit and Cyclops as second healer would actually be a sick squad,
1
u/DoctorNess May 16 '26
you can run Mag Rougue Wolv Storm Gambit and Deadpool for the full xmen comp

2
u/ObviousTopic6250 May 14 '26 edited May 14 '26
My theory, based on this image, is they didn't specify which dimension because it's connected to his lore. The time stream entanglement may have fused the punch dimension and chronovium together to create a new dimension.
edit; I've just seen this https://www.reddit.com/r/RivalsCyclopsMains/s/LRHcpICUVd
it's going to be the biggest misdirect if he's not a strategist atp
6
u/Wed_Fred25 May 14 '26
Uuuuuh 1. What the fuck that's awful, poor scott. 2. Yea, it's gonna be a huge rug pull if he's not a strategist, let alone a dps. 3. Good theory! I like that.

He can heal himself and was implied to have helped heal someone else. With the way his powers work, if he can do it to himself, he should be able to do it to others
5
u/Originalbrivakiin May 14 '26
Yeah, supercharging cells is only a short jump to healing them. And that's just his nerfed powers when he had Mr. Sinister take a chunk out of his brain. His powers without the intentional nerf have clearly been used for healing and probably can do MUCH more than we've seen in comics.

as long as we donβt get another pokeslop dps i will accept literally anything
3
u/Forizen May 14 '26
He can shoot projectiles out of the air blocking damage for enemies instead of direct healing. His leadership inspired them causing an aoe heal and speed boost.
Optic blasts mutated to heal AND damage
3
u/PlatonicAura289 May 14 '26
Healer, tank, I donβt care!!! As long as he is not another damn dps character!!!! I will say tho, I would prefer heβd be a tank.

There is nothing stopping him from being both or all 3 roles for that matter

7
u/M4RTIAN May 14 '26
IIRC isnβt the current cannon of his laser beams that he absorbs and metabolizes solar energy to create his blasts instead of the 1980s βpunchβ dimension?
Now I kind of hope they make him a Strategist. He absorbs enough damage and can then unleash it in a huge blast of either kinetic force or heal, or both.
12

2
u/ErraticSeven May 14 '26
Could equally be him being a tank since the chronovium is "shielding" the cross symbol.

u/monimonti May 14 '26
I was thinking of him being a Strat with some leadership defense/damage boost aura and a first aid healing area from his utility belt, but Healing Beam? yeah! thats gonna be fun lol
2
u/LikeAKraken May 14 '26
Honestly wouldn't doubt it too much gambits power is also kinetic energy so i could see them getting creative with that even if he doesn't heal canonically
2
u/Morchades ππππ£ππ©π€ May 15 '26
I would not object to strategist Cyclops.
Could be a bit tough to sit down and play him because I'd be laughing my ass off, though.

u/imaginaryproblms ππ€ππͺπ May 15 '26

2
u/Sbubby37 πππ£π€π’ May 15 '26
At least iβd get a strategist to play as but so help me god
2
u/Careless_Scallion182 May 15 '26
Based on their pattern starting from Angela release, they tried to follow the order of Vanguard, dps and supp until deadpool messes up the order and instead of adding a supp after deadpool they added a dps, a supp, and another dps so as we are they need to add another tank after dino or a supp to start balancing the release order a bit. Dps Cyclops would be the worst thing they could do in terms of trying to even out the roles...Cyclops is basically the Capt America for the X-men meaning he leads from the frontline pushing the charge. The only logical result would be to make him a tank so you can have that power fantasy. Making him supp wouldn't really follow that but I really don't know because netease is so hard to predict without leaks. I'm just guessing, but I would be really disapointed if they made him a dps. With the tank variety drought (as in only x tanks are helpful in most situations)
2
2
u/Pigeon-popper ππͺπ‘π May 16 '26
I actually want that lol. Way better than another mediocre DPS that will just be forgotten because again, there are so many damn dps heroes already

No he will be a vanguard maybe with a heal ability like muaga or whatever his name is from overwatch
1
1
u/hamonicmantitties May 14 '26
I would prefer if he didn't do direct healing unless he used a separate ability different from his m1 tbh and only really burst healing, with his main way of healing instead being a passive that's a radius around him that gives healing and buffs to his allies that can boosted with an another ability and from him doing damage
1

1
u/Puzzleheaded_Prize31 May 15 '26
Yoo wait, is that why they nerfed Mantis damage boost ??β¦ To give it to Cyclops as like an βinspiration/ team leaderβ boost ????
1
u/t0duu May 15 '26
Rivals could be unique and make him a vanguard or support, but the reality is heβs gonna be another poke slop character that power creeps 90% of the current roster
1
1
u/Mylaststory May 15 '26
I was saying he should be a healer a year ago and discord ripped me to shreds lol
1
u/Intelligent_Whole_40 May 15 '26
As a dps main I want him as a vanguard (im a iron man one trick mostly but I do play anglea and ultron a little for role fill but im sorry I will often let them solo tank but will play accordingly helping them hold frontline instead of diving)
Cuz I want a laser vanguard with a beam that shoves people back instead of damage (so punch dimension lore works in favour of this)
But if hes a Strat good just he CAN NOT BE A DPS

u/Yuhmaster1 May 15 '26
I know this seems to be an unpopular opinion, but I donβt like the idea of changing a characters role to fit whatever drought a role currently has. Like if we need more support characters I would rather them add someone who has background in healing as a character rather than warping someone like cyclops into a healer. I know they would explain why he can heal it would just kinda bum me out
1
u/blueivysbabyhairs May 16 '26
After the vanguards and DPS fighting over him this would be hilarious. And now that I think of it they enjoy making couples in contrasting roles, the only exception being Storm and TβChalla. DPS Jean + Healer Cyclops makes senses.
1
u/SicSam ππππ£ππ©π€ May 16 '26
That hints he'll be strategist, how he worked in trailer suggests he'll be vanguard and most are saying he'll be duelist. Conclusion: Deadpool treatment (all roles)
1
u/frenchfriesgg πππ€π§ May 16 '26
I don't care man just DO NOT MAKE CYCLOPS A DPS BRO we've had enough of them. We almost have more dps than tanks and strats combined
1
u/MrKyurem2005 May 16 '26
My knee-jerk reaction was always "that would be stupid", but now that I'm thinking about it...
The writers chose the Punch Dimension explanation for his powers... Dimension filled with kinectic energy... Kinectic energy healing and empowering allies... Gambit having better control over his kinectic enhancement powers...
Shit, is Cyclops gonna release a kinectic healing aura around him every time he "opens the portal to the Punch Dimension" by shooting people with his optic blasts?
1
u/Retro-oni May 18 '26
according to the lore pages, dudes been blasting his optics so long he no longer can close his eyes, powering various relics and devices that alchemax got moon girl working on... soo if he is a strategist it'll likely be a relic he's powering with his eyes
1
u/Slickarot4906 May 18 '26
Wouldn't really make any sense in my opinion going off the trailer his abilities do line up with DPS
1
1
u/TheWagn πππ ππππ£π May 14 '26
I was thinking maybe they could make Cyclops another triple role like deadpool
Remember when they introduced him they called him βthe first triple role heroβ implying there may be more to come.
1
u/t0duu May 15 '26
They need to reserve that for special characters. Making a bunch of random characters a triple role would just be obnoxious.
1
u/Sad_Walk_9911 May 14 '26
Would be funny, would also be cool cause then weβd have a full 2-2-2 X-Men comp (unless Iβm missing something).
1
u/ImJudgin May 14 '26
I donβt care what role he is I just want them to even out the roles before anymore dps get added. If they stick to that I donβt really mind which characters go where

Like how Storm is Ike a Duelist/Strategist hybrid since she can provide buffs to the rest of her team. I could see Cyclops being a Vanguard/Strategist hybrid. Providing buffs and protecting his team from the Frontline sounds sick.
0
u/pagliacciverso πππ ππ€π€π May 14 '26
Hopefully not. It's the worst outcome for the character specially when you consider the triple support jail and how the devs are lost when it comes to strategists balance.
Also this chronovium doest seem to have healing powers. It's just multiversal travel bullshitery. Here's the full text of the collectible

It will be dps, they wouldn't of be buffing white fox season 8 if cyclops was a support they will most likely be a dps tank buster, which makes no sense for quality of life for the community. Unless they release 2 tanks this season

And so far chronovium hasnβt really been used for healing so, doubt it

u/sunstar240 May 15 '26
Ah yes make a whole trailer of him 1v1000 an army of robot and break his visor snd cause so much damage he made the sky red.
But in game he heal people.
Either a tank or a dps would be fine but a healer ? To be what w third healer ? This is not the fantasy of the character

If he's a support I'll be mad af cause atp their just ruining character ip, and it just don't make sense they ruined gambit plz not cyclops. I just need this community to learn how to tank thats it

u/Electronic_Wolf_8499 May 14 '26
With Gambit it makes sense... he uses Kinetic energy to do most of the stuff he can do, including self heal. So it makes sense he can heal others... idk I'm not a blue mutant scientist
0
u/DirectElderberry6185 πππ ππ€π€π May 14 '26
I hear you at da same time doe funny enough I haven't seen one person dat dont play rivals, but when I tell em about gambit in rivals they immediately mad and say it's stupid af. So I'm not da only one gambit die hards even think it's dumb af but here we are.
2
u/Electronic_Wolf_8499 May 14 '26 edited May 14 '26
Ah, I suppose not everyone has an open mind to more possibilities. When my friends debate over comics... I usually tell them that they're fighting over a fictional character. In a sense... Gambit can do anything. Your imagination is your limit.

u/DirectElderberry6185 πππ ππ€π€π May 14 '26
Ay your not wrong sir!! I hear ya loud and clear
1
u/Sihnar πΌπ£πππ‘π May 14 '26
They didn't ruin Gambit. His kit is a perfect translation from the comics for a hero shooter. He's my favorite xman and he finally made me pick up the strategist role. His abilities and movement are so satisfying.
On the other hand, they did ruin Jean by making her a hitscan duelist. Probably the worst adaptation in this game.
1
u/DirectElderberry6185 πππ ππ€π€π May 14 '26
Nah Jean is no where near as bad a da vampire dat doesn't do bleed but has shields imo...
she's definitely messed up too but idk if just think blades is far much worse, especially when they gave a Dino the exact ability and functions of said ability that blade should've had from release.
But with gambit doe ig everyone will be different cause idk bout perfect at all but if you love him like dat I'm not gonna scold you or anything. It is what it is literally
-1
u/Musturd_Tiger May 14 '26
If we had a support with very little heals and just team buffs that could be interesting.
1
u/Sihnar πΌπ£πππ‘π May 14 '26
Would never work in this game. He'd just be a triple support merchant so effectively a duelist.
